Heir of Earth

Rate this book
Sidhe [ shee ]
Noun

In Irish legend, a superhuman race descended from the goddess Danu. Comparable to medieval fairies or elves. Beautiful, powerful and merciless to humans who get in their way.

After graduating high school, American teen Faye Kent is spending a magical summer in Ireland with relatives. The summer promises her everything her old life didn’t, including a chance at love with the impossibly perfect Dayne DeLaney. But Faye is hiding a secret, a secret she came to Ireland to forget.

The mystical Irish countryside also hides a secret, a slumbering evil that awakens and quickly fixates on Faye.

The locals warn Faye to heed their cautionary tales of the beautiful, but deadly, creatures that once ruled this mystical land. They avoid the Sidhe at all costs. Faye laughs at their superstitious ways, breaking every rule that could have protected her.

She should have listened. The Sidhe now hunt Faye, and she faces a fight that will expose the secret she desperately wants to keep hidden and uncover a mystery even deeper than she could have imagined.

Soon the world will know the truth about who Faye Kent really is. Will she sacrifice herself to save everything she loves?

I grabbed this book when the author offered it for free on Amazon. As anyone who reads my reviews knows, I have a thing for fae/Sidhe-based stories, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I was utterly thrilled with this treasure of a story. So thrilled that I grabbed book 2 Son of Sun to read right away.

The story takes us from the US to Ireland, where an insecure girl, Faye, with paranormal abilities hides her abilities by being the outcast. She wants to avoid revealing her “freakish” traits.

A summer trip to visit an “aunt”/cousin in Ireland changes Faye's life forever. Her boss is one of the Sidhe living among us, and they are inexorably drawn to each other. I did find Faye's attraction, instant obsession, with her boss a little rushed, but I chalked it up to the Sidhe lust appeal.

Faye soon discovers that her gifts are treasured by som,e but when she realizes she has more gifts than she thought, she discovers the combination of these gifts might just mean her destruction.

I found the story completely enchanting. From start to finish, I was pulled in by Clair's imagination...tying the modern-day world to the fantasies of long ago. Utterly entertaining, surprising, unexpected twists, and an ending that left me hanging and wanting more.

Wow...I definitely discovered a gem in this book! I had a bit of difficulty rating this book because part of me wanted to give it 5 stars, but there was one big problem I had with this book, so I had to go down a star. If I could, I would have given it 4.5 stars, but alas Goodreads doesn't allow me to :( Anyway, this book was amazing. I loved the whole concept of it. This novel is unique, original, and amazingly detailed. You can easily tell that Ms. Clair put a lot of effort into crafting the world of Sidhe, and making it her own. I loved the mix of mythology, and Ms. Clair crafts it in an expert way that allows the reader to enjoy a brand new kind of supernatural world and have no idea what to expect next. The writing was great as well. Everything is very detailed and descriptive. I could see the lush, Irish rolling hills, the cliff-sides, everything. The whole book just came alive, and it created a beautiful story.

The characters were just as amazing. Faye is a very likeable main character. She is easily relatable, and is faced with what she terms a "handicap." This handicap isn't what you expect, but she copes with it the best way she can imagine, by pushing everyone away. At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like her because she was very timid and meek. However, once she actually arrives in Ireland and is with her Aunt and Uncle (well, actually they're her cousins, but that's a whole other story), she comes alive in a way that I was never expecting. She undergoes a transformation that was brilliant (and brilliantly written), and Faye becomes a stronger, more outgoing girl. As soon as I read this, I knew Faye would be a character I would love. Dayne is beyond words. His character, while mysterious and aloof at first (and who doesn't love those types of characters), quickly becomes entangled in Faye's life, and you will love every single scene he is in. Both the reader and Faye quickly become aware that something strange is going on with him, and while I did figure it out easy enough, it was still interesting to learn his secret and everything that went along with it. I am claiming Dayne as mine right now, so watch out girls haha! He is so romantic and sweet, and he is willing to go to any length to keep Faye safe from his world. Faye is definitely one lucky girl. The secondary characters were also full of life and excitement. Even though they aren't the focus of the novel, I loved all of them. They truly had their own personalities, and added a great depth to the story that is not usually found in secondary characters. I loved Rose, Phin, and April! They were awesome and just plain hilarious.

Throughout the entire novel you know something major is going to happen. There is a dark and dangerous character that is briefly mentioned in key scenes, and comes into play much later in the book. The story is shrouded in mystery, and it keeps the reader hooked till the very end. And then, by the end, you will be so desperate for the next book you want it immediately.

So why not 5 stars you ask? The reason has to do with the beginning. I felt that it dragged a bit at times. It was still great, and I was interested, but there were parts that could have easily been cut out, and the story wouldn't have been affected (besides the fact that it would have been shorter). I kept wanting Faye to smarten up and figure out what was up with Dayne because honestly, it was glaringly obvious-even if you didn't read the description of the book.

Nevertheless, I am eagerly anticipating the next in this series, and book 2 can't come out soon enough. After everything is revealed, quite shockingly I might add (the scene was amazingly written), the story moves quickly and the pages fly by. You never want to stop reading, and will be left breathless with all of the twists and turns. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes Irish mythology (Sidhe, fairies, etc), and anyone who is looking for a great read. Yes, it is a bit long, but don't let that worry you. It just gives you more of the story to love! Happy reading :)

Heir of Earth by Rosemary Clair

Heir of Earth by Rosemary Clair is about a girl named Faye who finds out that she has visions of the future and decides that no one can ever find out about them because she would be labeled a freak. This decision affects the rest of her life.

Faye’s high school years ended up being very lonely. She lost whatever friends she had but she was going away to college and thought she could start fresh. Faye’s cousin (whom she called Aunt Rose), decided that as a gift for graduating, she would come to her house in Ireland, and work on the farm with her Uncle Phin for the summer. Faye doesn’t realize her whole life will change when she gets to Ireland.

Faye meets the love of her life (Dayne Delaney), finds out the Sidhe(fairies) are real, and that she has some sort of magic quality(Dayne thinks she could be an Elemental) . Knowing about the Sidhe and the fact that she is possibly an Elemental puts Faye’s life in danger. Dayne tries to protect her but when he goes home to LisTirna, all bets are off. Faye finds herself and is determined that no matter what is thrown at her, she will have a life with the one she loves.

Rosemary Clair has written a beautiful story that is easy to read and follow ,about young women who finds her strength and stops letting people walk all over her. Faye grows into strong confident women because of everything that happens to her in Ireland.

The story is full of wonderful mythology which any fantasy lover would enjoy. Clair has given her readers wonderful worlds. The detailed, descriptive language as well as the breathtaking imagery in both the earth realm as well as LisTirna, allows the reader to easily transport and immerse themselves into those places.

This is a definite must read! I can’t wait for the story to continue!

Faye's story started out very interesting. I wanted to find out what her "disability" (as she originally terms it) was all about and how it would help or hinder her further in the plotline. As the book continues, however, it takes a turn for the worse. There's WAY too much lip/mouth descriptions between the main characters and it becomes downright distracting and predictable. Even annoying. (50 Shades annoying!) Also, Faye doesn't become stronger or wiser for all that she learns about herself. She is still this whiny, crying, cowering, "woe is me" type character. So cliche! How can a reader fully believe the ending (if you can call it that) when throughout the whole book she is a total wuss? I don't feel like the author describes body language correctly either. For instance "punching" chins into the air to show stubbornness or shaking heads at intervals when shaking your head would be a confusing gesture. It was difficult to get through for sure. I was half way through the book when it really began getting irritating. I stuck with it since I had devoted enough time to reach 50% and I still expected her to come into her own. Another thing (which I normally never mention), the typos, misspellings, and grammatical errors were atrocious. I decided to highlight all the errors and was shocked that it totaled 113! Won't be buying the sequels or reading this author again.

Well this book started out amazing! Bu sadly over the course of the book the characters slowly degressed.
Dayne, oh Danye, who could resist you? I know I can't. But somehow he turned from dark mysterious man, to a lovey-dovey boy. He's a sidhe, who knows how old, Prince and heir to LisTirna but somehow when he finally had Faye, he talked like a by stuck in puberty and nthing refelcted the wisdom he should have.

Also I often thought that the horses were made too human - I'm no expert but the way they reacted sometimes, it was too unrealistic.
And while we're on the topic of unrealistic; Faye's transformation made no sense. She isolated herself back home because of her secret yet somehow in Ireland she opens up to everyone and makes friends, flirts with Lucas and Dayne and is simply adored by all? Nah, I didn't buy into that one.
And the Sidhe? Ara and her parents? Come on, their language was even more human and filled with teenage bitchyness than Dayne's. There was nothing regal about them.

I still imensely enjoyed the story and will go on to the second book, pining for Faye and Dayne and curious to know what she is if it isn't Sidhe but I truly hope the fae's behavior changes into something less human because otherwise I will find myself skipping over several parts of this book.

Isolation from everyone around her is the only way Faye can keep her secret. She is different, she have visions of the future and the guilt of not being able to change what she sees leads her to avoid contact.

She is so alone that when her Aunt and Uncle's yearly visit from Ireland doesn't look likely to happen she is devastated. Naturally shes over the moon when she finds out instead she gets to fly to Ireland to stay with them so long as she works for her uncle as a stable hand.

This is the chance for Faye to change from what she has become. To make friends, perhaps even find a summer boyfriend. Things change irrevocably for Faye and she is exposed to a world that has been hidden from all else.

I loved this book, there is always a space on my bookshelf for books including the fae/sidhe and refreshingly it is a completely different take on the Sidhe. This book has believable strong characters, takes you on a journey of self discovery, romance and magic. It wont be long before you find yourself addicted and reaching for book 2.

For 18-year old Faye, when her dreams come true they bring neither surprise or joy, in this excellent coming of age fantasy novel. Faye spends her gap summer between high school and college with her cousins in Ireland and soon learns that old world superstitions should be treated with keen regard.

One of the things that make this novel so enthralling, in addition to the beautifully written descriptions of Ireland, is that the texture of this book is based on careful research of actual Irish legends and folklore. If some of the plot twists seem a bit unexpected it is probably due to the fact that the Irish people themselves have always seemed a tad over the top to their more staid neighbors.

The book gets off to a slightly slow start, but as soon as Faye arrives in Ireland, the narrative soars with deft beauty and a sure hand at creating a land haunted by tales of past strangenesses that are both wondrous and slightly ominous and Faye is soon enmeshed up to her pretty neck in all of them, which makes for a very good read!

So, in a word: entertaining. I'd forgotten what the story was about having downloaded it a while ago and began reading it with pleasant surprise at the usage of Ireland and faery mythology. The teenage central character was interested, understandably withdrawn and seemed to possess a strength often lacking in other such teen-angst stories. The romance element was inevitable of course, though there came a point where I became ridiculously excited as the teen began actually questioning her developmental ability to love like she thought she was and doubt the whole "till death do us part" emotional responses. I was floored! Could this be a legitimate attempt at romance while keeping sanity? Alas my hopes were dashed as she spiraled again into unmitigated emotional craziness. Still fun, still entertaining, but having lost the chance to be different I lost the desire to read past the inevitable cliff-hanger ending.

Great first read

This is a good book by Rosemary Clair. About a girl named Faye that didn't fit in, she saw glimpses of the future and feared others would think she is crazy. She had no parents and was adopted. One day her Aunt Rose called and asked her to come visit her in Ireland. In Ireland she worked at a ranch with her Uncle and meet a guy named Dayne with piercing blue eyes who was a Sidhe. Great read and anxious to learn the powers that Faye has in the second book.

This book was an interesting twist on fairies and other supernatural beings from what I usually read. I enjoyed this story, but I think there was a lot that could be taken out. The story just seemed to drag on for a long time.

Heir of Earth is fantastic. I really hope the author expands on this series because there is so much cool and unique creativity she inlays within the mythology and she does a great job creating a story with likable characters and enough depth to keep you wanting to know them better.

The story badly deserves a 4-stars rating (it's a great story), but I was crying out of desperation while reading the entirety of the novel because of a sea of typos :(
