Harry Seidler is often considered the grumpy old man of architecture here in Australia, so this book comes as a pleasant surprise. It's a collection of Seidler's photography from around the world, from a large range of countries and periods.
The combination of Leica and Kodachrome provides images that still sparkle over 60 years later, in some cases. Seidler's own work is not pictured here, but it is easy to see his influences in the selection - it is a bit of a Le Corbusier lovefest, for example.
Unusually for a book published by Taschen, the proofing of the work is poor. There's inconsistencies in the text, slip-ups and the occasional use of a low-resolution positional image instead of a high-resolution final. It is frustrating as it detracts from what appears to be the best testament to the architect's humanity that's appeared in recent years.

Tijdens zijn loopbaan toerde archietect Harry Seidler de wereld rond, en dit boek bevat de foto's die hij nam van wat hij de markantste architectuur ter wereld vindt. Door een tip van zijn broer, die fotograaf is, gebruikte hij enkel Kodachrome film, waardoor zelfs bijna 60 jaar oude foto's er zeer goed uitzien.
Die voorbeelden omspannen een periode van zo'n 5000 jaar, van 3000 v. Chr. (Egypte) tot nu. Subsaharaans Afrika ontbreekt volledig, en België is mager bedeeld (hij toont enkel het Solvay- en het Horta-huis, de kathedraal van Antwerpen en de Grote Markten van Brussel en Antwerpen, maar bijv. niet Louvain-la-Neuve).
Een aanzienlijk aantal foto's tonen de dak- en torengewelven van kerken, zodat deze aardig tussen elkaar vergeleken kunnen worden.
Dat de auteur een modernistische architect is, die les kreeg van Bauhaus-groten als Breuer en Gropius, zie je heel duidelijk in zijn selectie, met nogal wat werk van Le Corbusier, voor wie hij zijn bewondering niet onder stoelen en banken steekt.
