Meet Nick Sax, a corrupt, intoxicated ex-cop turned hit-man, adrift in a stinking twilight world of casual murder, soulless sex, eczema, and betrayal. With a hit gone wrong, a bullet in his side, the cops and the mob on his tail, and a monstrous child killer in a Santa suit on the loose, Nick and his world will be changed forever this Christmas - by a tiny blue horse called Happy!
Grant Morrison has been working with DC Comics for twenty five years, after beginning their American comics career with acclaimed runs on ANIMAL MAN and DOOM PATROL. Since then they have written such best-selling series as JLA, BATMAN and New X-Men, as well as such creator-owned works as THE INVISIBLES, SEAGUY, THE FILTH, WE3 and JOE THE BARBARIAN. In addition to expanding the DC Universe through titles ranging from the Eisner Award-winning SEVEN SOLDIERS and ALL-STAR SUPERMAN to the reality-shattering epic of FINAL CRISIS, they have also reinvented the worlds of the Dark Knight Detective in BATMAN AND ROBIN and BATMAN, INCORPORATED and the Man of Steel in The New 52 ACTION COMICS.
In their secret identity, Morrison is a "counterculture" spokesperson, a musician, an award-winning playwright and a chaos magician. They are also the author of the New York Times bestseller Supergods, a groundbreaking psycho-historic mapping of the superhero as a cultural organism. They divide their time between their homes in Los Angeles and Scotland.
Ummm... I don't know what any of that was. There was some sparks of interest, but overall I had no clue what was going on and not having a very good time. The strongest section was the reveal at the end, but even that felt weird and disjointed (especially considering the gruesome beginning). I think I handle gross and vulgar scenes that are done with humor a lot better. Yes the world is bad and we are all doomed, but to just put it as fact instead of either making an important point or trying to do something new just makes me sad. And while I see the irony of a comic called Happy making me sad, it's not enough to be interesting unfortunately.
This is the second graphic novel I read , ever! Loved it more than I would have because of the Netflix show with the same name. Christopher Meloni, the actor that plays Nick Sax is jus so awesome in the show and I liked the aesthetics of the show so much too!!!! Wish this was a longer graphic novel though and not jus 96 pages!!!!
I've seen both seasons of the SyFy channel adaptation, parts of the first few episodes of which map fairly closely to this issue, it seems. Good stuff (very, very gruesome, especially the TV version.)
But this is still.pretty good. I don't normally read comics, but this was amusing. Pretty short, though. If you liked the show, you might like this, too.
