While the Kalians celebrate their recent victory, an innumerable horde of galdaks pours out of the mountains, intent on destroying the human race. The people of Kalia look to Traven, a master wielder, to save them. However, even his immense power may not be enough to stop the imminent threat. His will, courage, and strength are tried as he prepares to give his all, even his life, for the people he loves.
This review may contain spoilers: The Wielder series is a great trilogy I would say the bad part about it is that it is only three books, I was hoping for Celeste and Traven to get together in this book causing Kalista to evaluate her feelings and have some of that play into a fourth or fifth book but sadly this was the end. :( but what an end the magic of this series was well thought out the gems that help were not just all powerful there were advantages and disadvantages. The end battle was not like a lot of other books oh you went here got this now you are uber powerful. Nope Traven had to use his head and his gem strategically and I loved that it was not just who is more powerful than who wins. Don't take my word for it just buy the book and you will get it.
Let me start off by saying the basics of the story is the same as others in this genre for the most part. Boy is introduced; boy matures; boy becomes the world's hero. However, the author does a great job at the storytelling and the building of the characters. I enjoyed the descriptive storytelling that some seem to have found badly done. I was able to "get to know" the characters and their reasoning and have read the entire series and liked every one of them. I was saddened to find that the author ended the series. I would have liked to find out more information about Traven's past and that of the ancient Wielders.
A good finish to a surprisingly good series. Classic fantasy all the way and perhaps slightly predictable at points but it made you want to keep reading the next chapter to find out what would happen. The reason I am giving it only 3 stars is because I thought it all went a bit too smoothly at times and the main characters were seemingly invincible when it came down to it. For instance a normal human being defeating apparantly hundreds of opponents during a battle or the female lead who shoots down 10 enemies with the same amount of arrows in the middle of the night after a long day, never missing even once.
Anyways still a fun book to read but not the best story ever
This was not a bad series by any means. By the time I got to the final book, the writing did improve quite a bit. I realize this was the first series by the author and it would be a great read for young adults interested in this genre.
But for myself, I need something more in the character and story development areas. This was very basic writing and storytelling from my point of view. I did enjoy the books, but if you are thinking Jordan or Martin, don't be surprised if the story does not capture your imagination the way those guys do.
Decent conclusion to the trilogy. After three books, I expected the author's English to be better, but the writing wasn't egregious enough to make it unpleasant to read. The magical combat sequences were interesting, and the magic system was explained a lot better than in the previous books. I'll probably try some of the author's other works.
