Twenty very different animals show their superpowers and hit the spotlight in this information-packed read.

This book is all about animal facts—super animal facts. Before the parade begins, the author lists the various animals and the page on which they will appear with a small illustration to keep things clear. Then, the types of superpowers are quickly presented with a short description and a symbol for easy classification and search purposes. After this, the animals are presented, one-by-one, each on a two-page spread with the animal in full color on the right and the information on the left.

The presented animals include a few lesser known ones but, for the most part, ones the reader has probably run across before. But that doesn't mean that this book doesn't pack many surprises. A short description of each creature is followed by a column of its powers (clearly symbolized and explained), and then, there's a column holding all sorts of other facts concerning the highlighted animal. Each explanation is written at an appropriate reading level and keeps the sentences worded with the readers in mind. It's interesting and will offer more than a few things readers probably didn't know. Plus, each animal is very well-illustrated and easy to identify.

It's a great read for animal fans or even to gain a bit more insight. Unfortunately, there isn't a list of which animals have which powers (for simple referencing purposes), but the rest is very well laid out and works great for libraries, homeschoolers, and group lessons as well. I received a complimentary copy and found the information well done.

Superpowered Animals is an excellent nonfiction picture book for upper-elementary aged children. The 60 page book is FULL of detailed information about 22 different creatures with a wide range of superpowers. This is an engrossing book for animal-lovers and one to revisit.

Each featured animal has a full spread in the book with one page detailing that animal's super-power and the other page features a full color tarot card-inspired illustration. The visual elements are wonderfully paired with the information to make this nonfiction book feel unique.

The book contains a Table of Contents that shows each of the 22 animals featured in the book, as well as 19 different superpowers (e.g. super sonar, super sight, super strength, super mimicry, etc). Each animal represented has more than one superpower and is given a star rating that reflects how many superpowers it has. I do wish this part of the book would have just a bit more detail -- that each superpower would have listed which animals in the book have that superpower so you could go and reference them in the book that way. Meaning, if I want to find all the animals in the book that have "super smell" as a superpower, there is no quick way to do that.

Overall it's a clever way to share detailed and fascinating information about a range of animals for interested children. Some of the animals featured are: Peregrine Falcon, Great White Shark, Narwhal, Crocodile, Superb Lyrebird, Common Vampire Bat, and many more!

***Note: I was given a review copy of this book via Phaidon. Opinions are my own.

In Superpowered Animals, readers are introduced to evolutionary marvels. And that’s how the book starts — giving a quick overview of things like strength, touch, sight chemicals, intelligence, teamwork, speed and regeneration.

From there, comes a separate two-page spread featuring species ranging from Iberian ibex and crocodile to exploding ant and honeybee. Each spread features a full-page illustration that calls to mind tarot card design and a page full of facts including super skills, size, color, life span, habitat, diet, reproduction and enemies.

Superpowered Animals is one of those books that children and kids will be drawn to. Sure, the superpower aspect is a big enticement, but once you open this nonfiction book, the bold, graphic elements and fantastic illustrations keep you flipping. Kids will love all the facts, and parents won’t mind leaving this one out on the coffee table as a conversation starter.

The Earth is full of incredible animals including 22 of them that seem to have superpowers. This oversized children’s book features facts about the animals and what makes them super incredible animals. With superpowers such as super strength, super sight, super speed, super metabolism (why can’t I have that?), and super regeneration, these animals can do amazing and unheard-of things to stay safe from predators or to catch animals for their own food supply.

Every animal is assigned a star rating based on their superpowered skills. The animal that received the most stars…7…was the Polar Bear. Rounding out second place with 6 stars included the African Elephant, the Common Vampire Bat, and the Honey Bee. For example, the African Elephant is the giant of the savanna. It only sleeps 2-4 hours a day and that is usually done on its feet! Even though we know the African Elephant is one of the largest animals on Earth, it is also known for many super skills including hearing, smell, touch, intelligence, and strength.

Each page features an illustration of the animal with its strength symbols featured on the image. Then each superpower is explained along with other facts about its size, color, life span, habitat, diet, and more.

One animal is featured on each page spread along with its superpowered skills. Kids will be amazed that an African Elephant can feel vibrations made by other elephants more than 10 kilometers away. A dolphin mom sings to her baby in the womb so when it is born, it will know how to identify its mom. Polar Bears have a third eyelid that acts like sunglasses to filter the bright sunlight that reflects off the ice.

There are some incredible animals on Earth and kids will enjoy learning about their superpowered skills. They may just find a new animal to call their favorite!

This book is like a superhero guidebook of the animal kingdom. Twenty two animals are profiled with their super powers. The fun part is that each of nineteen super powers has an emblem, and each animal has a cluster of emblems showing its super powers. There are emblems for super strength, super speed and super sight, as you might expect. There are also superpower emblems for lesser known abilities such as super touch, super chemicals, super sonar and super regeneration.

Each animal gets a full two-page spread, with information on one side and a gorgeous full page portrait on the other. The portrait incorporates the super power emblems, and each of these portraits is worthy of framing, in my opinion. Sonia Pulido gives the animals majesty. The page with facts includes the animal’s class, order and family, and its scientific name. I love that each also has a moniker. For instance the True Owl is called “the lord of the night,” and the Exploding Ant is called “the deadly detonator.” Information about how each animal’s super powers are manifested is explained in eye-catching, different colored call-outs.

This beautiful book may not have an index or table of contents, but the design and artwork alone make it worth picking up.
