I picked this up at the library and it fell open at the photograph of a Jubbly! For anyone of my age these are near-mythical beasts - I'd started to wonder if they ever actually ever existed or if they were a figment of my imagination. I liked the gossipy style of the narration, especially the insider rivalry going on in the 'lolly industrial-complex' between Cadbury, Rowntree, Mars and so on. Sometimes the style was a bit too grating, but I did enjoy the book and it made me want to go out immediately and buy one of those slender bars of Dairy Milk from the vending at the bottom of Scheregate Steps.

An often very funny look at the social history reflected by our tastes in chocolate bars. If you ever wondered what happened to the Aztecs (bars rather than civilization) then this is the book for you. What I found particularly interesting was the competition between the various companies, as they rushed to emulate a competitor's success.

Part fascinating history, part memory jerker, part comical gazetteer - well worth a read for anyone who consumed sweets in the UK anytime before the millennium!!

What was not to like about this book, reading about oodles of chocolate with a splash of humour & the origins of where our childhood favourites began. Evoked many a childhood memory 🍫🍬
