Caves

Rate this book
Bit by bit, over thousands or even millions of years, water carves and shapes rock into designs only nature could create. Deep in limestone or under a few feet of hardened lava, on an ocean coast or a sandstone cliff, a cave is a mysterious and fascinating place.

Bookshelf Mentor Writing Trait:
Voice- In the book, Stephen Kramer writes an introduction that starts with what isn't in the setting of a cave and then moves on to describe what is in the setting of a cave. This book would be a great way to introduce students to using their voice a writer to write about something they know by introducing the setting through describe what isn't included in the setting before describing where the setting is. This can help to create a specific mood in your piece of writing with the words use are choosing. So by taking an already existing piece of writing and editing it to include a description about what is not included in the setting before introducing where the setting is, the students can use craft moves that help their writing become stronger.
Other suggestions:
The book would also be a great way to support the writing trait of ideas through encouragement of strong details to support the main idea of your writing. You could use a graphic organizer to support development of strong details by young writers to write about something they've researched.
It would also be a great science mentor text when discussing geological features.
