Black: A Celebration of a Culture

Rate this book
Willis (photography, Tisch School of the Arts, New York U.) has assembled an exhilarating collection of black & white photographs in this handsome oversize (10.25x11.25) volume that celebrates Black culture. The photographs are of friends, family members, activities, gatherings, people and places. Collected from the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, individual photographers' archives, and contemporary photographers, the images retain their subjects' joy and dignity. The photographs come from different eras, but are arranged by themes such as children, work, the arts, everyday life, sports, portraits, and spirituality. The book is aptly named, as it does succeed in vividly portraying and celebrating Black culture. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

This book is beautiful. I love how the photos were organized and the context behind why the collection was arranged the way it was. I wish some of the images were brighter so I could see more details in the photos but that seemed like a printing issue and not a photography one. I had a paperback copy but I'm wondering if people had the same issue with the hardcover version.
