Yurts: Living in the Round

Rate this book
Living in the Round journeys from Central Asia to modern America and reveals the history, evolution, and contemporary benefits of yurt living. One of the oldest forms of indigenous shelter still in use today, yurts have exploded into the twenty-first century as a multi-faceted, thoroughly modern, utterly versatile, and immensely popular modern structure whose possibilities are still being explored. Kemery introduces the innovators who redesigned the yurt and took it from back country trekking and campground uses to modern permanent homes and offices.

An excellent overview of all things yurt! Contains history, different styles, building code and plan appendices, and of course plenty of full-color photographs of so many different real-life yurt homes around the world. This is definitely the most comprehensive book and a must-have if you’re looking to build, or just learn more, about this fascinating round home!

A very useful general overview of all kinds of yurts, how to buy or build them, and how to set up a household. It is a little too into the woo-woo spiritual aspects of living in a round structure for my tastes, but that doesn't detract from it's utility so I don't really care.

great intro to yurts. i appreciated the historical context and the emphasis on the values imbued in this structure: harmony, wholeness, connection.

as someone with terrible spatial intelligence, i did find some of the structural descriptions confusing, more high-level schematics would have been helpful.

beyond excited to apply my learnings from this book toward my first yurt in a few months!!

This is a great primer about everything you could want to know about 'living in the round'. The book is not exhaustive about details on construction, utilities, maintenance, etc, but it gives you a nice overview if you're contemplating buying a yurt. It's also just a very enjoyable read during those times that you feel compelled to sit back and daydream about getting away from it all...

Great photos. A little light on details, but then, this is a general survey book about the topic and not a how-to-get-your-own-yurt book. It did accomplish its aim, which is to get the reader interested in yurt living.

Very well rounded! Does a good job of covering all of the bases on a topic like this; educational yet personal, emotional yet instructional.
