National Geographic Eyewitness to the 20th Century: An Illustrated History

Rate this book
Using photographs, maps, charts, and time lines, this comprehensive volume portrays this century’s incredible events and developments from the Wright Brothers’ first flight to Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon, up to the events of today. Organized conveniently by decade, each section begins by highlighting a prevailing issue of the day—America and Big Business, Women’s Suffrage, the 1924 Immigrations Restriction Act, the Great Depression, the Atomic Age, McCarthyism, Civil Rights, the Explosion of Mass Culture, the Rise of Conservatism, and the End of the Cold War. The 20th century brought forth the most dramatic advances ever made in a single century. No one tells it better than National Geographic Society.

Eyewitness to the 20th Century is a non-fiction book recapping the events from the 1900s to 1999. It categorizes into 10 year sections. This book also includes pages before each 10 year section. Eyewitness to the 20th Century covers events from the flight of the Wright Flyer to The Great War to the creation of the Internet. The format of this book really makes it easy to read.

Their are a couple of issues with this book though. First of all the sections don't really go to much in depth on the important/famous events. Secondly it focuses on Europe and the Americas more than the rest of the world. Personally I think those issues are minor compared to the quality of the rest of the book. In conclusion this book is a great book for people who want to learn about the 20th Century

When I was a teenager, I began to like learning about history, particularly the 20th century. This book was a great gateway into the basics and lesser known histories.

National Geographic Eyewitness to History From Ancient Times to the Modern Era by the National Geographic Society (National Geographic Society 2011)(900) is a very thorough introduction to most of the major issues, peoples, and events that have shaped our world. My rating: 7/10, finished 2/17/12.

Divided by into sections by decade, this book is very user friendly for students of 20th century history. It covers politcal events and pop culture. It's been invaluable to me in relating history to students in a clear, succinct manner.
