Rate this book
He's sworn to protect her, to give his life for hers. Giving her his heart, however, is absolutely forbidden.

For years he haunted my dreams. I never knew he's my shadow Fae guardian...

Or that I'm the future Queen of Nightmares.

Until he arrives, very much flesh and blood, to spirit me away to the Realm of Nightmares, and my awaiting throne.

But I'm not about to marry someone I've never met. If my guardian thinks I'll go quietly, he's about to have a fight on his hands.

What I'm not expecting is the powerful magic my guardian awakens in me...or the deep, dark secret he's hiding.

From the author of the bestselling City of Night duology comes a new tale in the connected Crowns of Aureon series. HOUSE OF GILDED NIGHTMARES is an enemies-to-lovers Fae fantasy romance. It’s slow burn leading to a spicy finale and is the first in a series.

I was very surprised to like this as much as I did. It took a while to get invested in the characters and world because it is really thrust on you from the beginning. After the initial action, I really enjoyed the pace that the story builds to and the twist at the end was not expected.
The writing is very maturely articulated and doesn’t come off cringey or YA like fantasy can.
I think I would definitely tune into the next chapters in this series to get some more resolution to their story!

My honest review was in exchange for an ARC copy for review before publishing.

This book sucked me in from the beginning and I could not put it down! Sarielle is a very relatable character, who never felt like she never fit in her world. When she is to become the next High Priestess of the Amethyst Palace, she is distraught. She has never had a choice in her life and will be forced to serve the High Priest for the rest of her days. Zyren, a mysterious man who has been visiting Sarielle in her dreams, shows up the night of the ceremony and takes her away to another realm.

Zyren, a shadow-fae lord, is her blood-sworn guardian. His job is not only to protect her, but to take her to the King of Nightmares, her betrothed, to claim her birthright as queen. Sarielle and Zyren traverse the treacherous Nightmare Realm and the spark between them continues to grow. Sarielle learns that she is also fae and has magic as she and Zyren try to escape their enemies and make it to the palace in time to save the realm.

Zyren is my new favorite Shadow Daddy! The angst and chemistry between Zyren and Sarielle is too good. You could immediately feel how they are drawn to one another. The tension and build up that led to the spicy scenes felt like a natural progression and I was emotionally invested in their love for one another. The world building was excellent, however, I felt like the end of the book was rushed and resolved too quickly. However, the twist at the end had my jaw on the floor and I am so looking forward to the next book in this series!! 5/5 stars 2/5 spice.

This was my first read from this author, and I received an arc through booksprout, this is my honest review.

'I am a villain. Whatever version of me you hold in your heart, whatever hope for a future between us, you must put aside.'

I really enjoyed this world, when I started reading the story of Sarielle at the Amethyst Palace, the world building reminded me of Empire of the Vampire with the religious background and ‘chosen’ elements. There is scene setting which gives us the background and brings us up to current day, where the prologue had us in the past.

The book is in three parts which is broken up into what I’m calling 'the before', 'the journey' and 'the after' - I’ve categorised it like this because for me the journey was where the book really shone. The challenges between Sarielle and Zyren were definitely my favourite elements, I particularly liked their awkwardness when bathing in the river and their night with the Veyeni when Sarielle had one too many wines and danced the night away!

I liked the use of interludes to give some wider context, I must admit that a few times when a chapter ended, I kept hoping to see Zyren’s POV in a chapter, I would have loved dual pov because he was so tortured at times I wanted to hear from him. He must have such a back story, in many ways he’s a much more complex character than Sarielle as she was so sheltered, but I see that it may have been a difficult task to include his pov as then some of the later plot reveals would have been spoiled.

Zyren was a dark shadow wielding mmc which is my 100% favourite so I’m all here for him!

'Dark as night from head to foot, even the blade he whirls in his hand. His silver eyes glow like the moon as he closes the distance between us with long, quick strides, murder in his gaze'

I felt the conflict the characters had between duty, fate and feelings and was rooting for their end game. I will say that I did sort of guess what was going to happen to a certain extent and I would have liked the scenes at the house of gilded nightmares to have been more drawn out but as it was on the clock that would have been difficult to do. The scenes were very quick post this and some parts happened a bit serendipitously which seemed a little odd. (Bit like LOTR and the whole eagle thing)

I would have liked the spice to have been a bit more developed, whilst steamy it was over very quickly when we had such a build up, lots of tension and emotional build which I enjoyed. I would say the same with some of the action, the pace changed quite a bit when the action would start and I tend to read quicker. The fighting would start and then quickly resolve which felt a bit lacking. If these two elements were more developed I would have given it a 5⭐️.

I’m really excited to continue reading this series and continue Sarielle and Zyren’s journey, I am still swooning over Zyren, a definite book bf contender!

Sarielle has been haunted by a shadowy figure in her dreams for years. Eventually, she discovers that this man is her sworn and blood-bound protector. Not only is he real, but the two now have to travel to meet her future husband so that she can become the Queen of Nightmares.

This book leans more on telling rather than showing. The Realm of Nightmares is a fascinating backdrop, but the world comes off as more flat and less immersive than I had hoped.

Initially, the "instant love" trope might feel a bit forced, but it becomes clear that there is more depth to their relationship than first meets the eye. The history they share through their dream interactions adds layers to their bond, making it more believable and heartfelt. However, the book could have delved deeper into these past interactions to provide a richer context for their feelings. We know that it happened and that there is a bond there, but it happens off-page before the story. I did not dislike this, but it made it more difficult for me to feel that emotional weight.

Sarielle is a solid character. She is angry at her choices being constantly made FOR her and she shows resilience and determination as she grapples with her new identity and the responsibilities that come with it. Zyren is also a good character, torn between his duty to protect her and his forbidden love for her. I like their dynamic, but it also feels a little flat.

While the plot is entertaining, it leaves questions unanswered. The pacing keeps the story moving forward but sometimes feels rushed - especially at the end. I was more interested in the world-building and politics, but we were mostly just given a traveling couple. I would say the romance takes precedence and there isn't a lot of meat to the story otherwise.

This book wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. Because it was under 300 pages I feel like there wasn't enough time for the characters to properly develop their connection and the romance but even parts of the plot felt kind of rushed. I know that the author used the fact that they have been meeting in her dreams since she was 16 as the foundation for how quickly there feelings and romantic relationship bloomed but I wasn't really buying it. And it also felt like too much happening all at once like the stuff with the rival Royal house but then also the king seeming nice but then turning out to be a giant dick who just also happens to be her guardian's brother which the guardian she's in love with never told her about obviously so there's that typical misunderstanding aspect within their relationship and everything was just happening too fast, didn't really buy into all of it and I know there's still two other books in the series but the writing and the characters just didn't really grab me.

This was such an unique and amazing book. Sarielle is such a bad ass character, but you feel a deep connection to her because of her passion, her fears, and, sometimes, her numbness towards what's happening to her.
The book was action paced, with a fierce love and an amazing cliffhanger!!
It was the first book I've read from this author, and I loved her writing. I honestly can't wait to read the next book!.

Niestety… Pierwszy tom „Dark Fae Guardian” to odgrzewany kotlet.

Moja ocena 4/10

3 - It was fine. There were so many opportunities to develop the characters and story but it fell flat. I wish we could’ve seen the FMC come into her powers during the journey instead of just trekking along.

Enemies to lovers is a complex tapestry that, in my opinion, can be put on a scale. On one end is contemporary enemies to lovers where everything's low stakes. The middle is when people are turned against eachother by their socioeconomic status'. Of course the other end is reserved for couples who have very feasible reasons to want eachother dead. This is usually political. For me, this book landed low on the scale because the characters only had a somewhat small conflict of interest. I'd label this as forced proximity with a brooding man before enemies to lovers.

Other than that, I enjoyed the book. There were a few errors within the book like missed quotation marks, but the writing itself was of good quality. High stakes moments were especially written well on the emotional front. Whenever Sarielle was in a threatening situation, I felt the panic with her. I will say the pacing of the book was odd, likely because of how short it was. Those high stakes situations were almost always cut short and whenever an interesting villain was introduced, they were quickly taken away. The same thing went for important moments between Sarielle and Zyren. I just wish it'd all been a few pages longer! The quality of the ending was significantly better than most of the other scenes.

Some of the magic left me confused as well. A lot was implied as "oh this is new and special" but grazed over in a way that felt incredibly vague. Namely, the strength of the bond. This is a minor point for me because I understand it might be withholding information for the plot.

I have so much love and sympathy for Sarielle. Her character hit home for me and there were a lot of lines from her that had me nodding my head. Zyren had my heart too, and I hope to see more dimensions from him in the next book. He held back a lot in this one (for many reasons). It's a bit disappointing to say I could list all the things I learned about him on one hand. Hopefully his character develops now that there are no secrets or emotions he necessarily has to conceal anymore. I'll probably read the next book in this series, but I'd say to pick this up as a lighthearted read! I definitely wouldn't dissuade anyone from reading this if they need to get out of a slump.

Sarielle was raised and has lived within the Amethyst Palace walls since she was an infant; training to become the potential High Priestess. But her world is flipped upside down during her initiation when the man who has been in her dreams for years suddenly manifests and whisks her away to a different realm. Sarielle learns that Zyren is her blood guardian: sworn to protect her, the future Queen of Nightmares, and bring her to the king in order to save the realms from the nightmares stirring in Valaron. The trek to the kingdom is no easy feat, with monsters and enemies hunting her and her newly discovered powers, but those are not the only things the duo will have to fight along the way. And that one thing might just be the undoing of it all. House of Gilded Nightmares is the first book in the Dark Fae Guardian series with loads of action, magic, slow burn/enemies to lovers romance, Shadow Daddies and things that go bump in the night.

I was pleasantly surprised but how much I liked this book. It took me a minute to really be invested in Sarielle’s character in part one but once the book started to pick up and get into the nitty-gritty, I really started to enjoy it! The build up between Sarielle and Zyren seemed very natural and their connection was incredible! She is develops into a headstrong woman and his protectiveness runs deeper than their blood bond. I thought the concept of nightmares being real life monsters in another realm was an interesting concept, and the descriptions of the ones they encounter on their journey really brought them to life in my mind. I feel like this world could be very complex if the author really got into it. The magical system is intriguing and I wish there would’ve been a little more world building. I can’t wait to see what adventures lie ahead of them in book 2!

4.5⭐️!!!!!!! Oh I ABSOLUTELY loved this book! The beginning sounded a lot like To Hunt A Demon King by Madeleine Eliot. I read that series before this book but i unfortunately dnf book 2. But yea the same things happened, mc was in the woods with a guy who helped her get to her destination and the majority of the book was their journey getting there and they both had to marry a king at the end. They also both crossed a river in their journey and stopped at a village inn. Oh and they had both dark and light magic. Just sounded waaay too similar and I thought it would basically be the same book but I WAS WRONG! This book was 10x better and I devoured her in almost a day! The slow burn omg the slow burn 🔥 ugh was lovely. For once in a romance book the slow burn is ACTUALLY slow burn and not I say I hate you and you’re my enemy but still so horny for you we fuck 30% in the book slow burn 🙄 shit grinds my damn gears! Sari and Zyren though? 😍

The journey was kept interesting with some fights here and there and the scene with them staying with those travelers and the celebration fire was so cute!! I really liked the concept of their powers too, the gold star sparkles she leaves behind sounds so pretty!!!!! Plus mixed with the shadows ugh I wish I could visually see it. But the ending was so unexpected and I loved that I didn’t see it coming!! Tired of these predictable endings and plots. One smut scene and at 80% of the way in the book?! that was great lol hardly see that nowadays in books. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy a good smutty filthy book as much as the next saucy girl but sometimes I wanna read about the falling in love part. the romance 💕🥰 slowly unraveling and this book gave me that 💋

Hoping book 2 is just as good if not better. I don’t understand the negative reviews I really don’t.

Plot - 3/5🌟
Spice - 1/5🌶️

✔️Forbidden Love
✔️Shadow Daddy
✔️Fantasy

Okay, so The House of Gilded Nightmares by Aurora Grey is basically your classic low-effort fantasy romance—like, it’s giving Pinterest aesthetic but with no deep lore. The story is about a girl who finds out she’s the future Queen of Nightmares (wild), and her broody, hot shadow Fae guardian rolls up to whisk her away to claim her throne. There’s some forbidden love drama, a sprinkle of magic, and a good ol’ “I’m not marrying someone I don’t know” tantrum. It’s super quick to get through (I finished it in under 2 hours), but if you’re expecting ACOTAR vibes or deep world-building, you’ll be mildly disappointed.

The writing is super straightforward, which makes it an easy read, but also…kind of basic. Like, the plot moves so fast you barely have time to care about the politics or magic system. It’s fun if you’re in the mood for something simple, but don’t expect your mind to be blown. The twist? Yeah, you’ll probably see it coming, but it’s still entertaining enough to keep you going.

Now, the romance—honestly, it’s fine. There’s tension, but the slow burn feels a little lukewarm, and the spice is barely there. If you’re looking for steam, this isn’t it. But if you want a light, low-stakes vibe check with some forbidden love and magic thrown in, it’s worth a shot.

Sarielle has always been different from the other girls. Not only with her looks, but the unusual dreams she has of a handsome stranger. When she's chosen as the consort to the High Priest, she takes the first opportunity to flee... To the Realm of Nightmares. Where she discovers she is the Queen and the only one that can save all the realms. They mysterious stranger in her dreams is her guardian, and he will stop at nothing to do his duty. Even when they start to fall for one another.

This is an amazing first book in a dark fantasy romance series. I love the world building which begins in a land that a rigid High Priest is controlling the magic and takes the reader to an enthralling dark realm of Nightmares. And they are literally nightmares. When someone dreams one, that is where they go. Sarielle is strong and independent, and she keeps falling into situations that she rebels against. Zyren is mysterious and hot and so easy to swoon over! This story has all the tropes you want in a dark romantasy. I can't wait for more!

surprising

I have been reading in this genre for a while now and never leave reviews. I felt that this deserved one.

The story so far has been very believable considering the main characters perspective. I enjoy the flash back moments the author includes because they give a bit of backstory without seeming like a second thought.

The main characters so far display the classic will they, won’t they troupe, with a hint of anger which isn’t so overbearing it becomes unbelievable.
There are some hidden elements which are relevant to the plot. The pace of this book is fast and makes sense in the reality of this situation whereas some books like to drag on encounters of intimacy to become almost too convenient to the moment.
I am eager to continue this series because it is not so dragged down by tension yet I am on the edge of my seat yelling “kiss already!” There is a real story here and the world building is thoughtful.
Additionally, I have found little to no errors in this book, and the writing is done very well and enjoyably.

I thought I really enjoyed this read, and I did kind of, but looking back all the flaws in the story start to show. It didn't feel like a complete book, almost like it was only part of the work. The ending was very abrupt.

The first 75% was good but I think that's due to barely anything of note happening. I was able to speculate and hope it was leading where I wanted it to. Once the plot picks up, it falls apart.

It's for sure a traveling book, as in Sarielle and Zyren were journeying across the Nightmare Realm for the majority of the book. And you would think their relationship would be able to steadily progress but it's almost 0 to 100. Most of the filler could have been cut out to flesh out more of the events towards the end.

I think the author has some good ideas but the editor needed to step in a bit more. The conflict between Zyren and Sarielle was so forced and the ending was such a letdown. But I do commend the author on some unconventional plot twists.

House of Gilded Nightmares by Aurora Grey - 4/5
Romance - Fantasy -

House of Gilded Nightmares is an enemies-to-lovers romance fantasy. This is a fast-paced read packed with tons of action, fierce love, and as always, an amazing cliffhanger. This was my first book by this Author, and I am ready to dive into more. I enjoyed the author's writing style; it is mature writing that does not leave the reader feeling they just read a high school book. I love it when I am able to envision the world I am reading about, taking me there along for the ride. The characters: Sarielle and Zyren are my favorites. You are able to enjoy the story and follow them as their chemistry builds, instead of it being addressed head-on. The ending leaves us off on a cliffhanger, which I love until the next in the series isn't close to being available.

He’s her shadow Fae guardian, sworn to protect her life—but loving her is forbidden.

The premise? So much potential. A mysterious fae guardian, a throne in the Realm of Nightmares, and a reluctant future queen? Yes, please. I loved the bones of this story and the idea behind the worldbuilding, but unfortunately, it felt a bit rushed.

The plot moves at lightning speed, which makes for a super easy read, but it leaves little time to truly feel the stakes, the bond, or the magic. Scenes that should’ve been huge emotional or plot moments ended too quickly, and the villain introductions fizzled before they had a chance to build tension. Same goes for the romance—I wanted more development between Sarielle and Zyren before the major feelings hit.

That said, I did enjoy the journey overall. The concept is cool, the ending picked up, and there’s a dark fairytale vibe I loved. If you’re in the mood for a fast, fae-filled fantasy that’s more vibes than depth, this one’s worth a read.

These are my opinions in exchange for this arc. It comes out Aug 31,2023!

This was a fast paced romantasy with a winged Fae guardian fae and a FMC with shadow daddy magic. The legit Queen of Nightmares. Sarielle was dumped on the steps of an orphanage and raised amongst a religion that is slightly shady. On the Night of the choosing she is chosen to be the consort to the High Priest. An honor she doesn’t want. At the last minute she is saved by the silver eyed warrior from her nightly dreams. And that is when she learns her entire life is all one big lie. She is the queen of a realm of nightmares needed to marry the king to stop the nightmares from escaping. There is a spicy scene in there and it did end rather abruptly but overall it was a fun read.

This was an okay book.
Fantasy romance. First half started very strong until she got to the Valaron.
Zyren and Sarielle both likable characters. And writing style is good.
But I think tension between main characters were missing and there was new characters thrown to us for a chapter and dissappear without a trace. Those characters didnt add anything into the story as well.
Because of this we are missing the major story composure between Sarielle and Zyren I think. I found their relationship was a little forced to each other.
And story lost me a bit in long normal behaviours so that I was kinda bored.
Because the tension was missing when they first had sx around %80 of the book, it didnt effect me.
But I think the authors style is great and I have hoped that the next book will be much better. So I will probably read the next book but will I rush? No. Sorry.

What if growing up all you knew was you were to serve your country, you just didnt know in what capacity. Then in a blink of a dream everything changes at least you think it does. Till you realise even in your birth place you still have no choice over your fate.

This book was a great read, it has a unique power system that makes for some strange but interesting twists in both the story and the characters.

The only thing I dont agree with is, i dont know if I'd call this an enemies to lovers more like a strangers to lovers.

It was an entertaining read. I really liked the world building with the parallel planes. Would've liked the world building it a bit more extensive.
I liked the unexpected twist at the ending. It's not a standard twist that appears in many books.
I felt that in the beginning the chemistry between Sarielle and Zyren was missing a bit. But i got better as the story progressed.
I look forward to the next part in the series!

Yoooooo. Kindle Unlimited has been on a roll with its book recommendations for me lately! This love story is VERY COMPLICATED! I am sooo excited to read the next book because that ending and those revelations were WILD! I don’t want to give too much away but the main character has to be one of my favorites I have read this year! She doesn’t whine or make dumb decisions and is very logical. All in all I love the story, the writing and can’t wait to read the next book. 10/10 recommend ESPECIALLY if you love a good Shadow daddy trope!

Okay.

The story line was exciting and interesting. However, I felt that there was a lot of unnecessary detail describing everything the character saw. It was a dramitically slow start.. Some of the chapters were just detail descriptions with minimal conversation. These were the chapters that helped me fall asleep at night.
Towards the end of the book the pace was much easier to deal with and kept me reading. The characters communicated, there was adventure, romance, twist and turns.
I gave it a 2 because the pace of the book was slow.
