When Renata is chosen to play the lead role in the school musical, students who used to ignore her start saying hello and congratulating her in the hall. She is happy until it becomes evident that Karin, a wealthy girl who expected to get the lead role, will go to great lengths to ruin Renata's reputation.
Queen of the Toilet Bowl showcased bullying and jealousy. I liked how the main character dealt with Karin and her meanness. The ending was good and looks like they might have a little kindness starting now.
This was a good book about dealing with bullying. I liked how Renata handled the last tactic the bully used. I did think that the ending was a little too perfect, but it was nice how it wrapped the story up.
A cute book about white people doing their racisms to immigrants. I do not like when non-ethnic authors take center in ethnic stories. I'm glad the main character got what she wanted in the end, but keep Brazilians stories to Brazilian folks.
Ok so every time I go to the library, for the past four years or so, I've seen this book. It has the brightest pink spine so it catches my eye as soon I walk into the teen section. For the longest time I've been avoiding reading it, I don't even know why. I think I liked seeing it each time I went and just knowing if I read the story the magic would be over. This time, however, I checked it out! *DUN DUN DAAAA* Sorry that was really cheesy.
But like I said, I picked it up and I read it in like 30 minutes. Super quick, super easy. There's only 104 pages and the font is like Hulk-size. It just helped me knock out a book because I fell a bit behind on my reading challenge and no that doesn't count as cheating ssssshhhh.
So I've put my mind to rest that I read The Queen of the Toilet Bowl. It wasn't even anything special. The story itself as a bit cliche and the characters were meh and plain but then again in 104 pages with Hulk-size font you can't really do a whole lot of developing. I also don't know why this book is in the teen section, yes the chracters are in Grade 9 but the way they acted I thought it was middle-grade. The cover is also a bit misleading.
I read this solely based on the title, the cover, and that magnetic pull I felt towards it every time I walked through the library.
When I first started reading the first page of "Queen of the toilet bowl" by:Frieda wishinsky, I was thinking to myself "oh, this is boring". When I flipped to the back cover and started to read more, I was interested in the action and drama. I read it more and more! until i loved it! I loved this book because there was a-lot of bullying between two main characters.
Two of the main characters was a girl named Raneta and Karin. These girls were enimies and Raneta was a nerdy girl, never got in trouble and she didnt have very much friends. Karin was the most popular girl in their school and had lots of friends. In this book, there was a school play and Raneta and Karin wanted to be in it. When Karin found out that Raneta got the position that they wanted, she got angry. This is when the drama started.
Raneta's mother was a house cleaner she would clean peoples houses. Karin's family was rich and had nice houses. The drama was already started, and Karin was over her aunties house. While Ranetas mom was out working and karin saw Ranetas mother cleaning her aunties house and she took a picture of her cleaning the toilet. She also posted it on the internet and the whole school saw it.
You can read the full review and more on my blog. Queen of the Toilet Bowl is another simply-written, short and easy book published by Orca, whose goal is to help older readers learn English without having to read baby books. In the bookstore I work at I get asked to recommend a lot of these so I've been reading some.
A sweet story, Queen tells tale of a South American immigrant who is targeted by the Queen Bee at her school on the account of her mother being a cleaning lady. I liked Renata, and she dealt with the bullies smoothly and maturely, so the book comes along with a good message. While not patronizing, it's mildly cheesy.
Cover and title comments: They're not really appealing, therefore a mistake in my opinion, but they tie in well.
This was a quick read about a girl who is trying to not let a bully bother her. The lesson it teaches is a good one, but the story itself is just okay. I felt it was a little TOO cliche, with too much emphasis on stereotypes. And the book itself was too short to be introducing concepts such as a dead father or a cute boy that was hardly even mentioned or a rich man having an affair with the help - another cliche stereotype.
Another librarian sent me this in response to a call for low-level, high-interest books for teens. The title was so weird, I had to read it. Liked it pretty well!
It's interesting how novels from just ten years ago can seem so dated, due to the rapid changes in technology and how large a role technology plays in the lives of teens. Cyber bullying is a whole different animal now than when this book was published.
it was ok. it was about this girl who went to a school that was for upperclass kids. So everyone found out that her mom was a cleaning lady for most of her classmates house.
