So here's the story of how I came to be the lone reviewer of this little novel. A year ago, when my girlfriend and I moved from NC to Boston, we lucked into finding the sweetest little house on Craigslist. What we didn’t know at the time was that we were moving into a historically queer neighborhood where a ton of queer couples have lived for 40+ years. Basically, we accidentally moved into a neighborhood of aging lesbians and COULDN’T BE HAPPIER ABOUT IT.
The neighborhood also has at least 3 Little Free Libraries and, since I’ve been walking so damn much during covid, I frequent them to see if there is anything good and donate books I don’t want.
The other day a review copy of this bad boy. The back cover reads: “Kate Sweeney, rejected by her husband for a younger woman, has taken her pain and rage into solitude at a lakeside cabin. Lesbian Pat Thompson in renting a cabin on the same lake. She too is super in the throes of an agonizing breakup.” UM, SOLD.
Bless whichever of my dear queer neighbors put this forgotten gem in the free little library. It was the perfect end of summer read and honestly, was pretty good all around. Solid love story, complex characters, a nuanced examination of the AIDs crisis... this was a serendipitous find indeed
I’m glad this book existed at the time it was written.
This book was gifted to me by two lovely retired women at the YMCA that my wife used to work at. It will have a lovely home at the little free library near our lake- and with its nondescript cover- I hope it becomes a beach read for a woman whose life parallels Kate and her journey.
