A new paperback edition of the story about everyone's favourite dog, Schnitzel von Krumm, from everyone's favourite author, Lynley Dodd. This time, Schnitzel von Krumm - with the very low tum - is up to mischief, chasing, digging, hiding and hustling. He should remember that dogs never climb trees - but that's not going to stop him scampering right to the very top of the tree!
Dame Lynley Dodd is an internationally celebrated writer for children whose titles are highly regarded and much loved by her readers in New Zealand and around the world. Her stories are known for their lively sound qualities, curious animal characters, and the memorable illustrations that accompany the text. Lynley has received numerous awards, both for her writing and illustration, and in 2002 she was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to children’s literature.
Schnitzel Von Krumm is an enjoyable, rhyming story about a little Dachshund that is very mischievous. We see him scaring birds, rolling in mud, digging, and chasing a cat. Schnitzel is described on the first page as being able to do many ‘remarkable’ things. As the book progresses, we read all about these so called ‘remarkable’ things and the illustrations beautifully portray the mischief he gets up to. For example, we read that he “fetches the paper, his rug, and bowl.” However, the illustration shows he has accumulated a number of household items such as cushions and a potted plant, while leaving a lovely trail of muddy paw prints on the carpet. Children will find this book very enjoyable and will laugh at the silly things Schnitzel does. Due to the easy nature of the rhyming words, I feel young children up to the age of six/seven would benefit from this book. This book might be helpful with lessons linked to phonics and rhyming words. There is a segment of text which appears frequently and reads, “He can hustle and tease with the greatest of ease, but everyone knows that dogs NEVER climb trees.” However, the story ends with Schnitzel chasing a cat and the last page shows us that this ‘remarkable’ little dog, has managed to climb a tree.

Another great book from LD, this time about the mischievous Schnitzel von Krumm, who we are always told, can't climb trees, but gets into so much mischief throughout the story that eventually, if he wants to catch the cat, he's going to have to climb a tree. Easy language good for beginners with some help, with the repetitive word style synominous with Dodd, and her lovely artwork about the things out pets get up to. Funny and a quick read with bright welcoming imagery.
It’s a lovely book but disappointingly short. Well, it seemed too short to me. I love that Lynley’s illustrations show how Schnitzel managed to climb as far as he did, particularly as it reminded me of how our Abbban of Caprera did the same. He was after a possum and climbed no further than I could reach up to lift him down. So I’m guessing there is yet another miniature Dachshund somewhere in the world who also, not to be beaten by Schnitzel, climbed a tree.
With a title like this, you just know how it's going to end...but the journey there is loads of fun. Lots of rhyme, repetition and a few unusual words thrown in for interest. Lynley Dodd does it again! And those illustrations - little Schnitzel is such a cutie.
“Schnitzel Von Krumm, Dogs Never Climb Trees” by Lynley Dodd Well, this one eventually does! Great series. What a dachshund! – with his "very short legs" and "very low tum."
a lynley dodd is always fun. Pity I chose to read her it as she was turning greener and greener. I am sure Schnitzel Von Krumm had nothing to do with the vomiting bug which then took hold.
‘A story about everyone’s favourite dog, Schnitzel von Krumm, from everyone’s favourite author, Lynley Dodd. This time, Schnitzel von Krumm – with the very low tum – is up to mischief, chasing, digging, hiding, and hustling. He should remember that dogs never climb trees – but that’s not going to stop him scampering right to the very top of the tree!’ This book was fun. This is the fourth book from the Hairy Maclary and Friends collection by Lynley Dodd that I have read recently, and having enjoyed the first three, I went into this book with high hopes. While I wasn’t disappointed with this book, it was by far my least favourite of the four.
I also went into this book having no recollection of reading it as a child, so there was no nostalgia for me when I read this book. I did enjoy getting to experience this book without any knowledge of what was going to happen at any time throughout the story. I loved the lyrical rhyming verse and can easily see it being a joy for young readers when being read out loud. On top of this, young readers will adore the stunning illustrations that add a whole new level to this lovely little book. Lynley Dodd has done a wonderful job with this book. The story was fun and compelling, and the illustrations were bright and bold, which will capture both the eye and the imagination of young readers. Lynley Dodd’s writing and illustrations perfectly combine to create a lovely reading experience. Schnitzel Von Krumm, Dogs Never Climb Trees by Lynley Dodd is a must-have for all young readers and their families.
The rhythm of this book works really well (much like Hairy Maclary). The original has very little character development, beyond the face-value expectations of each of the dog breeds. So I enjoy learning a bit more about each of the characters.
The plot was a little lacking, mainly because I would fully believe that a full-sized daschund would climb trees. After all a relative of ours has three naughty minature daschunds who regularly make it onto the kitchen bench via a dining chair and the dining table. X-man loves dropping food for them from his high chair - so I suspect that Schnitzel Von Krumm will become a favourite character.
Overall a solid series book.

Lynley Dodd brings us another instalment in the life of dachshund Schnitzel Von Krumm of Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy fame. If you don't know dachshunds, you might wonder exactly how much trouble they can get into with their "very short legs" and "very low tum." But just consider this, they are hounds and as such share many characteristics with breeds such as Afghans, Beagles, Bloodhounds, Foxhounds, Greyhounds and Wolfhounds to name a few. In short (forgive the pun), they are very, very determined. This story lists all of Schnitzel's talents and the pictures are a scream. This would make a great present for a dachshund lover and is a wonderful addition to any dog-loving child's bookshelf.
Lynley Dodd's animals are all so wonderfully lovable! Like all of Dodd's books, Dogs Never Climb Trees drew us in with appealing illustrations and engaging rhymes. We've read about Schnitzel's adventures before, so we enjoyed seeing that with energy and determination, the unlikely is not impossible. Definitely one we'll read again!
A lot of fun for a very loveable character from the Hairy Maclary series. It's amazing what a little incentive will do. This story carries Dodd's trademark rhyming and bouncy rhythm, with great pacing at the end.
