”Don’t look so surprised. Seiji’s got a ton of friends at Kings Row, because he’s hard working and determined and always comes through for the team. So don’t underestimate him. Because the next time you fence him, he’s going to win.”
The fencing team of Exton arrives and causes all kinds of chaos. Seiji is forced to face his greatest rival and the one boy who seems to be able to get under his nerves.
This issue was great! There was tons of great character moments, mainly for Seiji, Jesse, Harvard and Aiden, and as I really enjoy all of those characters (though Jesse is someone I tend to be half annoyed and half intrigued by), I naturally enjoyed all of those character moments. I liked Coach's speech to Harvard about the importance of sometimes putting yourself first and remembering to ask for help, and I loved all the stuff with Seiji and Jesse. I desperately want to learn more about what their relationship used to be like and what caused Seiji to literally haul ass out of the country to avoid Jesse. One does not react that extremely to just regular relationship issues, although, perhaps one does if one is Seiji Katayama, who does not seem to be the best at handling difficult emotions. Whatever the case, I want to find out more about them. Seeing Nicholas also come face to face with his half-brother was exciting and I definitely wanna see more of Robert Coste's boys together.
On the shipping side of things, this issue definitely fed my Seiji/Nicholas heart. I cannot with these two idiots. I want them to kiss, please. The fact that all of this was too much for me and I grinned like an idiot.
The art is, as always, brilliant, funny, expressive and unique. Gotta love Johanna the Mad!

So I have been reading this series for FOUR years now! It’s crazy! I love it but I am also feeling very frustrated. I feel like we wait a long time for a new issue and then barely anything happens! I don’t think I exaggerate. Like I said it has been four years of this series yet barely a few months have passed. The boys are yet to even participate in an actual HS level competition, let alone a National or international competition. What I am saying is: the rewards don’t seem to meet the wait.
Also, I am not loving the sharper lines and angles on the newer drawings. It is making the boys seem much older than they are supposed to be. The coloring on the cover of this issue has too much orange. I thought Jesse looked like Donald Trump’s grand child.

PS: Some people noted about an art quality issue, and I agree. The artwork seemed off since Redemption #1, so I did some comparisons with a friend.
- The (black) lines on their faces and hair are thicker and more defined
- Noses become pointier
- The color became warmer and more saturated
Honestly it's sad to see cause I really love the previous art style of Vol 1-5 with softer colors and line arts, and a lot of people certainly do too. The boys look cuter that way.
Anyways, the covers by Lenyan (Magdalena Pagowska) are STELLAR.
Also, C.S. Pacat and his glorious metaphors.
He can say a completely different thing and we can still know EXACTLY what he meant.

Shaking off most everything that I don't remember, GAH! This issue! Seiji and Nicholas got so much focus in the original run and it just tickles me to see so much Harvard love. Sure Nicholas and his family drama, fencing struggles and Seiji feels is still a delightful focus, but the whole Havard being the ONLY person Aiden drops everything for? I squealed a little bit. If they are not all over each other by the end of this series, I may scream without the delight of my squeal.

Review applies to vol 1-4 of this comic series. I feel like I stepped too far into a world of specific jargon and we'll established characters who already know each other so well. It was a little overwhelming to jump straight into this series with no prior knowledge of their preferences, strengths and challenges. I also have realised it takes a really special sports manga/comic to really grab my attention. I liked the cute faces the illustrator did!

Three stars is actually the highest rating I've ever given an issue of Fence. At least this issue FINALLY made some progress in addressing 1) the potential romance between Seiji and the protagonist, and 2) whether our protagonist will address the fact he's related to the blond fencing champion villain.
