I grew up on a farm in the Canadian prairies but got the call of the wild and migrated to the snowy mountains of the North where I spend my non-writing time outside doing outside-things.
I write books about young people.
Young people who love hard and screw up big time. Young people who question the world and push against what's expected of them.
Even if it's layered with sweet romance or a cute premise, I don't always write clean books and don't shy away from touchy subjects, but I'll always try and let you know what you're in for.
I am but an outlet for those who live inside my head.
Just from the blurb, and even into the first several chapters, I wasn’t sure that I was going to like Gracie, to be honest. She’s self-centered, controlling, manipulative, and is annoyingly overconfident. Thank goodness she narrates her story, because getting inside this girl’s head makes all the difference. Surprisingly jaded for a fifteen-almost-sixteen year old, Gracie has constructed all kinds of emotional walls and barriers to protect herself, stemming from an unwavering belief that the people she cares about will inevitably leave her. People always leave and nothing ever lasts. And so, Gracie’s determined to carve out a place for herself in the world, determined to create perfect memories for herself, and determined to take what she can get from people before feelings fade and she gets left behind.
But at her core, behind the walls, behind the saucy grin, behind the irritating overconfidence she protects herself with, is a girl who’s achingly vulnerable, uncertain, and emotionally damaged. And this girl I like.
Enter Bentley McKinna.
Gorgeous smile, washboard abs, a couple years older, and (most important of all) temporary – Ben is the perfect candidate for Gracie’s next perfect memory – a summer fling – but to her surprise, she quickly finds that he’s not so easily manipulated by her… charms.
I… seriously… this boy! I just love him, and I love that this book also features him as a narrator. My philosophy? Two perspectives are better than one, and in Ben and Gracie’s cases, that’s definitely true.
Having grown up in an excessively privileged lifestyle, Ben has become disillusioned by the games, the disingenuousness, the expectations, the manipulations. The Holloway Farm provides him with a perfect escape, a place to think and figure out his life… at least, that’s what he thought. He never anticipated the boss’s beautiful, headstrong daughter, who makes it more than obvious she that she has designs on his virtue. It’d be easy to ignore her, except for the rare glimpses he gets of the real Graceland Holloway, which intrigue him despite his resolve to not get involved. And suddenly, Ben’s summer just got a lot more difficult.
Ben is looking for something genuine and real. He’s only eighteen, but because of his experiences growing up in the family he did and being used for his talent and connections, he’s developed a more mature perspective on life and relationships. Caring and kind, Ben’s a bit of a bleeding heart, wanting to fix things that are broken, and he senses there’s something about Gracie that is deeply broken. But that said, the boy’s no pushover, and he doesn’t hesitate to call Gracie on her crap and to tell her no. Even when it’s really, really hard. Seriously, the amount of self-control this guy possesses should qualify him for sainthood, and it makes him all the more appealing to both me… and of course Gracie – who’s not one to back away from a challenge even if it is starting to get a little more emotionally confusing than she’d originally intended.
And really that’s what this story is all about – the characters and the relationships. It’s Gracie being forced to face feelings and realizations she’s uncomfortable or unfamiliar with. It’s her struggling to come to terms with certain aspects of herself and her past. It’s about how meeting a person can become an unexpected catalyst for change, and how that person makes you want to become a better version of yourself. It’s about two people, each with their own unique set of issues, trying to figure out just what they mean to each other, end up learning new things about themselves as a result.
And while Under the Dusty Sky does mostly focus on the development of Gracie and Ben’s relationship, it also takes a look at all of Gracie’s relationships, with her family and friends, and how they’ve been impacted by her somewhat skewed perspective of love, loyalty, family and friendship.
As romances go, Allie does a fantastic job of building romantic tension between Gracie and Ben, all while keeping it a very realistic romance for teenagers – realistic expectations, boundaries, parental authority, a slew of protective brothers, and consequences. I always appreciate when there are substantive outcomes for the very human choices the characters make, whatever they may be. It lends realism and weight to the entire story. That might sound like a major downer, but I really don’t mean it to. While the novel deals with some weightier themes, it’s not a super heavy book. I guess I just mean to say: it’s a story of life’s messed-up and messy wonderfulness.
Or maybe: Life happens… and so does kissing.
Overall. Sexy and heartfelt, Under the Dusty Sky is a wonderful story of self-discovery and new beginnings.
* Due to some of the content, I’d recommend this book for readers 16+
Allie Brennan is an amazing writer. If you have seen my review of her book Tight Knit, you would know how much I adore her writing style. It is so easy to get lost in her books. While I loved Tight Knit, I feel like Allie went to the next level with Under the Dusty Sky. I was really glad to get the opportunity to read this title.
To jump right in.. Let’s talk about Gracie. It took me awhile to adjust to Gracie, her personality is a lot different than I am use to seeing from a female protagonist. She is a great character in the sense that you really become attached to her. It was actually a good thing being introduced to a type of character that I am not use to seeing, it helped to make the book even more interesting.
However, when you are introduced to Ben it is clear that he is the complete opposite of Gracie. I really liked Ben’s character and when the relationship between him and Gracie really starts, the book heads off in a completely awesome way. Seeing how he treats Gracie, and then getting somewhat annoyed with how Gracie acts at times will really keep people reading.
It’s hard to blame Gracie for having the attitude she has, there are some very legitimate reasons behind it. It is just one of those situations where you wish she will see what is in front of her and not be so confined to the way she is use to acting. It’s tough as a reader to accept it in some cases, but when you step back and look at the story as a whole you see how it all falls into play. And ultimately it really does help to form a really amazing story.
Overall I was really impressed with this book. The emotions felt much more powerful than I saw in her other book, so I think that helped make this book a little better in my opinion. I do feel like some readers might have some issues with Gracie which I can understand, I had some issues with her but it was something that I ultimately found working very well with the story. Sometimes you got to trust in the authors and know that they know their characters inside and out and will do their best to make sure it all makes sense.
If you have read Tight Knit by Allie, I would highly recommend that you check this book out. Even if you haven’t read it, this would be a great book for you to get introduced to Allie’s writing and style. She is honestly great, and I think there are many readers out there that will enjoy this book.
Was this book either a hit or miss, you ask? My response: At least in the GIF image, the ball almost made it in the hoop. This book? Not so much.
Not at all.
Honestly, I don't think I'm too hard to please. I'm also not a picky reader. I can generally tolerate a lot of things... especially a cliched, cutesy rom-com type story? Sign me up! I'm not too good to read romance novels, and I definitely don't have a vendetta against books that are predictable and safe. I love that stuff. Sometimes, a girl just needs her fluff.
But.... I think this is the first book I've read (with very low expectations), wherein: I FELL ASLEEP!!!!!
I had to pick this up like three times, and just had the hardest time finishing this in one sitting. It was like a chore. A very boring and frustrating chore.
Honestly, if I wanted to be extra nice, I could probably chalk this up to personal preference, but nope. I wasted way too much time reading this, and I'm not a happy camper. I'm gonna have to say that this was one of the most boring and uninspired books I've read in awhile.
It was a total snooze-fest. I hated Graceland, and there was ZERO chemistry b/w her & Bentley. Ew, and the names!
The pacing was sluggish; the writing was mediocre and simply put: lazy. The characters were flat, the dialogue forced, and there was absolutely NO chemistry b/w the leads. Again, I repeat: NO CHEMISTRY. No spark. No zing. Just nothing! There was a whole lot of empty words and a fully cheesy plot that I just couldn't get into, which resulted in surpassing my tolerance of one too many eye rolls.
Allie Brennan knows how to write a good book, one that draws you in and makes you feel for the characters. Well her books do that to me anyways. Under the Dusty Sky was no different.
Graceland Holloway is selfish, manipulative, a bit controlling. That's not the real her though. That's just what she wants people to see. I like Gracie, even the fake one for some reason. She has reasons for the way she is and I get it. Graceland took me on an emotional ride, she had me laughing one minute and wanting to hug her the next with tears in my eyes.
Then there's Bentley McKinna.
He is like the car. Hard and smooth and sexy... I like Gracie's way of thinking.
He is helping on the farm for the summer. Bentley only shows people what he wants them to see also, but he wants to know the real Graceland. He takes no crap from Gracie and tells her like it is and I love him for that.
There is some definite chemistry between the two as they try to figure each other out. I enjoyed how there relationship develops, it is all very realistic to their age and the situation. It's no all insta-love.
Under the Dusty Sky just isn't about their relationship though, it handles the relationship of Gracie's family and friends as well. They are a wonderful cast of characters. I love her brothers and how protective they are over her.
Under the Dusty Sky was a wonderful heartfelt read!
"Eventually everything collapses. That doesn't mean you just abandon it."
Graceland is such a feisty, headstrong character--the youngest in a family of men. But she's also damaged. Bentley's just too perfect for words. *swoon*
It's a hot, tense romance I highly recommend by a super talented writer! <3
I read this book on tippy toes. Every pages something would jump out and annoy me and I was sort of going along carefully and not getting too attached because I had a feeling that it could be a DNF if the characters annoyed me too much. But every time the author started losing me, something or other caught my interest and I kept going. It was a close call. I eventually got intrigued enough. This book is honest and sometimes painfully realistic. The author doesn't protect the heroine from herself. Gracie is all about the perfect. But I'm glad that she makes some very imperfect choices and the author lets her. I liked how the author explores Gracie's doubts about love and forever.
Feelings fade. Eventually, you won’t feel them anymore, but you’ll always have the memory.
Most heroines like Gracie will have that cynical nature regarding love but I feel like the author really expanded that concept with Gracie's character. Despite the weirdness of it, I did like the switch up of a heroine putting the moves on the hero while he struggles to resist.
I should be pissed at her. I should be terrified of what else she has planned for me.
Graceland is all sass and spunk and steel. She puts on a good front to hide her feelings. She doesn't believe in forever in any relationship.
“Gracie has a hard time forgiving people, Ben. She’s not one to let stupidity slip by her, and I don’t really think she trusts anyone, even us.”
Abandonment issues. Even her family recognises that.
Half the time I was sneering at her for her immaturity and then the rest of the time I wanted to give her a hug. She has mummy issues.
I read that poem every year on my birthday. That poem is about me. About how she didn’t want me. How I’m her imperfect.
She's the kind of character that I don't know whether to slap or applaud. She's 15 and I'm a little creeped out at how sexual she is and how much she screeches and shrieks like a regular bad guy girl. But I like that she doesn't dole on the make up or play underhanded games. She knows what she wants and she goes for it. She's spoiled as the baby girl of the family with three older brothers. She is definitely a brat with her Daddy girl status.
I bat my long lashes, and Daddy melts. Like always. I remind him of Mom. I look like her, and I use it when I need to.
She knows how to work her feminine charms.
At school, the hair toss gets me pretty much whatever I want.
Her twin brothers aren't so easy of course and at first I thought they'd be cruel bullies with their pranks and teasing. But they are actually really adorably dedicated to their sister. And naturally, they are protective.
Archer to Bentley - “I’m warning you to be careful, and also if it ends badly, Asher and I will be the least of your worries. You haven’t met Hunter yet.”
Bentley
Similar to this book, Bentley grew on me. At first, I hated lots of things about him. I hated how he described music. *shudder. Author is definitely not a muso. Bentley's view of Grace is a bit unusual. He sees that everything and everyone revolves around Grace. He struggles not to join the orbit.
If I give her what she wants, she’ll be done with me. Of that, I'm certain.
Everyone lies to keep Gracie happy. It’s too familiar. She’s too familiar.
Sometimes Ben annoyed me with his superior attitude, but he's actually pretty great.
“It’s not just your mistake to make, Graceland. Not when I’m the mistake.”
His outsider view on the family dynamics is interesting.
Carter tries to explain, and Gracie takes another step back. I have no idea who’s the parent and who’s the child. They switch roles so many times.
Bentley has a white knight complex.
Sister - “You can’t save her, Bentley. Stop trying to save people. To believe the best in them. She’s no good for you, and you know it.”
“No, Sash. I don’t know it. You can never know it. You talk about it like it just happens, like it’s not my choice. If you ever had to put a little effort into anything in your ridiculous existence you might understand that. Some things are worth working for, even if they fall apart in the end.”
Romance I get really annoyed when usually hostile dogs love the hero at first sight. It's just another nail in the coffin of an unrealistic concept of the perfect man. I also hate when a girl's in a situation and the hero is the only person who can “truly understand” her. *gag. I hated that they both see how “deep” each other is.
Sexual Content: It's steamy without the steam. There's a lot of full body banter but there's no groping or below-the-belt action.
**I received an ARC from the author for an honest review**
I read Allie Brennan's first book Tight Knit and fell in love with her writing. When I finished that book I searched for any other work by her an discovered Under The Dusty Sky. The blurb excited me and I couldn't wait to read it, so when the opportunity came to read and review this book I jumped at the chance. Literally, I was jumping up and down. I was not disappointed.
Under The Dusty Sky is not your usual uniform YA novel. Fifteen year old Graceland Holloway doesn't believe in love just memories. Her mom left when she was little and she blames herself.
"'Just you. You’re the only one in the world who can’t be in love.' She looks right at me, her eyes so scared and unfocused it gives me that same feeling as before. To wrap her up inside of me and keep her there, as part of me. 'Not if I want them to stay.'"
Since then she has grown up in a houseful if men that give in to her, and shes used to getting what she wants.
"I bat my long lashes and Daddy melts. Like always. I remind him of Mom. I look like her and I use it when I need to."
So when Bentley Mckinna arrives to work on the farm for the summer she comes up with a plan to lose her virginity and create a 'perfect memory'.
"I had it all planned out. This was going to be easy. Boys are always easy. Bentley isn't a boy. Not like I'm used to."
Eighteen year old Bentley just wanted to get away for the summer. He wasn't expecting the spitfire that is Gracie, but he can't seem to help himself. He likes to fix things, and quickly finds that Gracie is very broken.
"She definitely doesn’t seem her age though. There is something about her that makes her older. Something in her eyes and how focused they are."
He tries his best to stay away and break his habit but the pull to Gracie is hard to resist. He wants to help her.
"I've been here for less than 24 hours, and this is the most intense girl I've ever met."
Their story is complex and at times heart breaking. You really feel for them and just want things to work out for them. The secondary characters are usually just background filler but you really come to care for Gracie's best friend Lacy and Bentley's sister Sasha. The story moved along at a decent and believable pace, and the ending kinda leaves you hanging, but in a good way. Making room for an epilogue or for the reader to make their own HEA, which I like. You can only read so many stories before you start to guess what happens in the first two chapters. Can't wait for more Holloway Farms novels by Allie Brennan!!
Gracie was a little shallow, self centred and manipulative but she was real. Honestly, what teenage girl doesn't think along similar lines at one time or another? I could totally relate. I loved Gracie's character. Bentley was honourable and swoon worthy and moments between him and Gracie were really sweet. Allie has the ability to write a story that flows effortlessly, making a really enjoyable read. One of my favourite books.Dying for the next one!
I absolutely loved this book. I love everything Allie sends me, really, because each one never fails to make me laugh AND cry. The romance, as always, is swoonworthy. ( it's about time we see some YA romance gender role reversal- a guy that's soft and a girl that pushes everyone away? yes please!) Her books wear you out emotionally, but in a good way. Kind of like after a really hard yoga class, when you feel like you're about to fall over but also really happy and relaxed.
I won an eARC copy of Under the Dusty Sky. I have been waiting to read this book. I really like the cover. Allie does a great job designing book covers. I liked other books of Allie's that I have read. I really liked the story but it didn’t quite unfold the way I expected.
At the beginning of the story, Gracie’s oldest brother Hunter leaves home. He just graduated high school and felt it was time for a change. Gracie takes it really hard because she has abandonment issues. These issues stem from Gracie’s Mom leaving the family when Gracie was three years old. For this reason, Gracie is a pessimist when it comes to love. Gracie does not believe that love lasts. However, she believes in creating perfect memories and moments. The things do not always turn out the way people want. Gracie does not get attached to many people because she feels that they will end up leaving.
“No better to keep it fun. To keep all of that feeling stuff out. Then, it doesn’t hurt when they lose their flavor. ~Gracie.
Gracie acts very confident and a lot of times she is confident.Deep down, she is broken and there is a vulnerability to her. Gracie is used to getting what she wants. She toys with boys. However, Bentley is no boy and he is in a different league. She is bound and determined to lose her v-card. Bentley is the guy she has in mind. She acts like she is ready but she is not. Gracie is looking for fun and simple. Little does she know that Ben is not simple. Gracie needs a man to keep up with her not a boy.
I really liked Gracie’s family. She had great older brothers. They could be a pain in the butt but they were protective of her. I thought her father was a really nice guy. However, I felt that they were enablers at times. Gracie was used to getting her way. She was Daddy’s little girl and got away with a lot. Her family kind of tip toed around issues. Sometimes it was hard to know who wore the pants in that family.
At times, I liked Gracie and I disliked her. I like that Gracie was not a pushover and she could hold her own. I liked that she spoke her mind. On one hand, I liked that Gracie was bold. On the other hand, sometimes she was too bold. However, Gracie could be very destructive to the people around her and to herself. I do not even think that she meant to hurt other people or that she always realized that she was hurting others. She treated people like they were pieces on a chessboard. The girl had this edifice built up around her emotions to protect herself. It seemed as though there were two sides to Gracie. The one side of Gracie was overly confident, arrogant, distrustful, self-centered and manipulative. The other side of Gracie was vulnerable, genuine, unsure, a little more open, and sweet. I did not really like the manipulative side of Gracie who put on the fake seduction act. Some of that was not real. I liked the genuine side of Gracie that was real. It was very confusing for Bentley because he never knew what side of Gracie he was going to see.
The thing is that Gracie did not need to act like some siren to get Bentley’s attention. She did not even need to come onto him like she did. Bentley was not like a lot other guys. He liked the side of Gracie that was real. Bentley was drawn to the side of Gracie that wore overalls and had a shy smile because that was real.
I thought this was a great passage in the book:
Bentley says,“Gracie steps past me, into a slit of soft sunlight that illuminates her face and she’s absolutely stunning. I see hot girls everywhere, but as I watch her smile at me, with not a stitch of makeup on her face, I realized I’ve never before seen a beautiful girl. Her dark eyes are endless and the longer I look the more I catch glimpses of the side of her she tries so hard to hide. This side. I get caught staring and she suddenly shifts her gaze to the dusty straw-covered floor and bites at her bottom lip, keeping that smile in check. Her hair is twisted messily and pinned up. Her worn sweatshirt is stretched and ratty and hangs off one shoulder. Her jeans are loose, and her thumbs are hooked casually in the pockets, the mysterious leather book still clutched in her hand. She looks real. Authentic. This is the girl hidden beneath the attitude, the manipulation, the forwardness. This shy girl who chews on her lip and avoids eye contact breathes a new life into me that I know won’t last. I get that same urge as before. To wrap her up inside me keep her there always. Because this isn’t the Gracie that the world gets to see.” ~Bentley.
I would just say to try not to judge Gracie right away. Sometimes it is really hard to like her. A few times I wanted to give up on her. I never hated Gracie but I did hate some of her actions. However, she is a damaged person. Gracie bottles up her emotions and doesn’t know how to deal. There were times when I was disappointed in her and angry with her. There were times when I wanted to shake her and say Grace, what are you doing? I wanted to jump in the pages of the book and talk some sense into her. There was hope for Gracie and she started to open her eyes and see how her actions affected others.
Ben was beyond amazing. He was a wonderful guy. I saw him as the voice of reason in the book. He gave some good advice. Unfortunately, sometimes people have to learn the hard way. The guy had a lot of restraint and maturity for his age. There is a scene where Gracie gets drunk and Bentley has to come and get her. He even holds her hair back when she throws up. What a guy. He was a real gentleman. I was a little surprised by Bentley’s back story.
Ben has this need to fix wounded birds. Ben has this habit of wanting to save women. Usually, it does not end well for him. In the past, Bentley has been used by women. He is one of those people who gives and gives in a relationship and people take and take. There is kind of a role reversal in the book. Sometimes women want to save a guy and think that they can change them. Well in this case Ben wants to fix Gracie and protect her. Unfortunately, it does not work like that a person has to want to change. In a sense, Ben helps illicit a change in Gracie but he is not the sole reason for the change. However, Gracie needed a reality check. I liked that Bentley did not always let Gracie have her way. Ben was such a lovely guy.
I felt some things in this story were true to real life and the way people act. I really like that the story had Gracie and Ben’s povs. I like that it was not a story where there was instant love. Gracie and Ben were “in like” and on a journey towards love. I like that they didn’t rush into saying the “L” word. Based on Gracie’s feelings about love, I felt that it made sense to not just throw the word out there.
I want to thank Allie for the eARC! I look forward to reading Asher and Lacy’s story. Lacy was so sweet and such a good friend to Gracie. Asher is a great guy and a great brother. He has been in love with Lacy for a long time. He never made a move because she is Gracie’s best friend. I want to see if Gracie and Ben are still together by the end of summer.
You can read this and many other reviews on my YA book blog The White Unicorn!
Under The Dusty Sky was one of those perfect summer reads. It was fast, it was fun, it was full of almost too much chemistry (the romantic kind, not the kind your learn in a classroom) and a handful of well constructed drama. I don't read too many books that are set of a farm, but I liked this one a lot!
The story isn't something that is entirely new. Rich, LA boy decides to get away and ends up working on a farm in the middle of nowhere and living with the family. But somehow Brennan does a wonderful job with everything she wanted to include in this story. A story all about a girl on the verge of her 16th birthday and the beautiful boy who falls into her lap, launching her newest plan to lose her virginity.
The romance plays the biggest role in this novel. The chemistry is off the charts and yet teases us without showing us almost anything. I couldn't get over how much I loved Bentley and Graceland's interactions with each other. He's older and it shows, but it makes for some really fun times out on the farm.
Gracie is so headstrong and so much of flirt that it's almost annoying. She damaged by the fact that people seem to keep leaving her. She victimizes herself so much that you can't decide if you want to yell at her or hug her. I have to admit that I wasn't her biggest fan, but I don't think that you have to love every character to the fullest point to love their story. Others will love her more than I do, that I'm sure of.
Bentley had a great role in this book and I kinda loved him. He's trying to figure out his life and the last thing that he needs is a beautiful, overly intense girl trying to get him in bed with her. He's trying to get away from his old life and instead gets so much more than he was bargaining for. It's quite funny to watch, actually. I think that he is just what Gracie needed and in a way Gracie helped him grow up as well.
I know I said that the romance is the main point of this book, but Brennan layers in some really interesting family dynamics as well. Gracie's dad and 3 brothers are amazing! I loved each and every one of them for different reasons. They all added such interesting layers to the story, showing so many different sides of both of our main characters through their interactions! There is so much pain left behind by Gracie's mom leaving, even if she left years ago. It's an interesting thing to see.
All in all Under The Dusty Sky is a brilliant beginning to what is sure to one heck of an awesome series!
I was so excited to read this book when I first heard about it so when I saw the author offering ARCs to reviewers I quickly put my name in! I was expecting this book to be similar to While It Lasts by Abbi Glines which is why I was really looking forward to reading it but this book was nothing like While It Lasts! It has its own plot and its own characters! The plot of Under the Dusty Sky was great! It wasn't the best plot that I've ever read though! It was about self discovery and about learning to feel comfortable! Sometimes I felt that I had no idea where I was in terms of plot! It was slightly confusing which I also didn't like! It did eventually pan out though and I was able to keep up! I also found the chapters to be a little short and this made the plot sort of quicken up a bit which I didn't like! The plot focused on a girl and a guy who have both had a bit of a rough life and they both fall in love and eventually teach each other how to let go of unresolved feelings! I enjoyed the plot! Just because I found it a bit confusing doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it! The characters were great! Graceland 'Grace' was the main character and at times I found it hard to connect with her! I wasn't expecting her to be so young, but try and act so much older than what she was! There were times when I felt for her though! Sometimes in the book it felt like she had two different personalities! There was the nice Grace and then the sort of sexy one! I preferred her when she was acting like herself and Bentley was the one who made Grace's show her true feelings! Bentley 'Ben' was the love interest of Grace and he was hot! I loved how hard he tried to stay away from Grace so that he didn't show his true feelings for her, but yet he was the one who showed her how to live again! I also really enjoyed that this book was told from both Grace and Ben's point of view as it made it so much more interesting! I will probably continue reading this series even though this one wasn't really what I was expecting! I did enjoy it so I will probably read the next book! How hot is that cover? I am in love with it! It is exactly the kind of cover that draws me to a book! Big thank you to Allie for an ARC of Under the Dusty Sky!
Oh man, so behind on my reviews I think I finished this one three weeks ago. So memory is lacking the details on this one.
I do remember being a little bit disappointed because I'd really loved Allie Brennan's first book Tight Knit and was expecting to love this one just as much, and naturally I did not. They book was pretty good but nothing noteworthy, the setting was different which I did like, I didn't much like that her entire family bent over backwards to please her but I guess it's pretty understandable with her being the only girl and a manipulative one at that.
Cute story....a quick read! Deeper than I hoped for, but at the same time still so very immature. The writing was great, characters well developed, and the small town southern setting is what made me really love this story! The love shared between this family is touching, and the love story is cute too. Gracie, is still in high school, so you get the young and fun carefree girl, but with that comes the what-the-heck-are-you-thinking-you-idiot moments. But didn't we all have those in high school? All in all, a good summer read!!! Enjoy!
Not bad. It needs some editorial work for sure. The voice of the guy MC is a bit too telling, but I liked the way her viewed the main character. Seeing and fearing her flaws, realistically debating what he'd do about it. I like the innocent, immaturity in the girl MC. And the realization that she had been a jerk-face more often than not. 15/16 year old girls aren't supposed to be easy to get along with and I like seeing that in a book if they show growth. I also have a bit of a thing for books with over-protective dads and big brothers. I love family drama in YA.
I remember really liking Tight knit. That there was something special about it. But I never left a review, and now I don't have the details about why. But I can still feel the feelings that book gave me. This book had a storyline that I liked but I felt like more could have been done about it. Ben is a good guy, I liked reading about him. Grace was also interesting. However, I never felt I really got to know them. Can't put my finger on why though. So, an OK read that felt inconlusive despite being concluded...
It was ok. Did not like Gracie at all... found myself skipping bough the book but got the gist of it anyways. Won't say this author is a bad writer but just like Lila Felix not too found of the female portage. Although the one from tight knot was not too bad. Found myself board and don't like that when I spend money on a book. May read the follow up, will see.
Overall a really good read! There were some points when I was just embarrassed by some of Gracie's moments and cringed at others. I was able to get into the book and am looking forward to the next.
