"Solitude" tells the story of Mila, a peasant girl who makes the mistake of marrying an ineffectual if guileless fellow called Matias and going to live with him in a hermitage high in the mountains. Mila at first finds the dramatic vistas overwhelming. Gradually, however, she adjusts to the unfamiliar and frightening landscape as well as to the harsh, wintry life of the an ...more

What does it mean to read a novel about a young woman whose freedom is curtailed, limited, trapped, that was written by a young woman who was forced to use a male pseudonym?

How do we interpret the violence that forms the climax of the tale?

Having spent all of this year reading solely works written between 1900 and about 1940, and focusing on those that (a)were neglected and (b) sought to do something new, one thing above all has become clear: there are many ways to make a novel “novel”. We are

What a wonderful work! A stunning quilt of legends and fairy tales laid over the story of a woman who must learn to deal with herself when she ends up living in a lonely mountain hermitage. My favorite character was the wise, serene shepherd who weaves fantastic tales and acts as a sort of mountain mentor to Mila, the protagonist. I loved it, despite the fact that I'm now having to hunt down 20 pages or so that were missing from my copy. It was a crucial part of the story, too! Anyway, I very mu ...more

I picked up this novel with a slight reluctance. Hmm, Catalan feminism? Seems a bit too right-on; maybe I should drop it and search for some Castilian patriarchy instead. I was wrong. This is magnificent. The brooding grandeur of the landscape and the unsentimental sureness of touch in the descriptions of the peasant characters build to a denouement of extraordinary power and intensity. One of those books where the plot and the characters linger in the mind long after you've finished it.

Wow. What a beautifully told story. Mila and Matias become the caretakers for a hermitage in the mountains in Spain. This is Mila’s story, as she navigates the responsibilities of her position, and the people of the area, and learns what growing up is. This is a Catalan classic, and a hidden gem of a book.

2.75☆ a book I had to read for my literature class.
It wasn't as dreadful as books my school makes me read usually are but pretty hard to read. But super cool if you consider it's feminism back when women weren't really respected.

Aclaparadora.

In one word I can say this novel is a masterpiece. Perfect plot, characters and use of language, especially the linguistic variation in Catalan.

Victor Català was the penname of Caterina Albert i Paradís, a catalan writer who took part in catalan Modernism movement. Her literary skill was first recognized in 1898, when she received the Jocs Florals (floral games) prize; soon thereafter, she began using the pseudonym Victor Català, taking it from the protagonist of a novel she never finished. Despite her success as a dramatist and her foray ...more
