When a stranger shows up in her front yard claiming he’s her mate, Ari Fallow wants to laugh in Dane Griffin’s face. But the sleek, sophisticated jaguar makes her hormones hum with a desire she can’t deny. She almost wants to believe his claim that she’s been his since birth.
Her father, however, is still sore over the fact Dane marked her when she was only minutes old. After summoning a pack of wolves to their quiet community for Ari to make her own decision about which male she wants, Dane's original plan to sever his ties to Ari fly out the window. He can’t lose her again. This time, he's playing for keeps.
Miranda writes hot, steamy erotic romance: the menage, contemporary, paranormal, suspense kind!
She lives with her wonderful, Brad-Pitt-lookalike husband (hey, they're both blond-haired and blue-eyed) and adorable still-needs-to-learn-the-meaning-of-NO toddler daughter on their spacious corn-field-and-cow-pasture-front property in Kansas. Librarian by day and author by night, she is also published in YA and contemporary mainstream romance under a different name.
Ok just to be clear, they bonded as children, were separated, and THEN had "plenty" of sex while (he was doing the searching) trying to find each other again. What...? I'm sorry. Let's say, for the sake of argument (it isn't possible, but we'll say it is), that she didn't feel the mate bond because she was too young to remember the before and after of being mated... What the heck is his excuse? According to the (jackass) hero, he was devastated when they were pulled apart, then he went on to have a ton of sex when he knew he was already mated? While he was relentlessly searching for the other half of his soul? Yep, you heard right. I don't know about you all, but that breaks the cardinal rule of every paranormal romance I have EVER read! Fated or no. You bond? That's. It. Till death do us part people! And sometimes into the great beyond :)
Plus, there was the whole seeing other shifters in a diabolical testing lab thing, then going outside and doing the horizontal tango without a single thought for the poor souls suffering inside. Not a word about the sentient lab rats in the rest of the book either (I'm just saying).
If you aren't catching my drift the point is this. Don't read this book. It just isn't worth it.

Ari Fallow doesn't quite know what to do with the strange, but hot, man in her yard claiming they need to talk. What he drops on her is not quite what she expected, she is his mate, but he wants to end the bond. Ari feels the need to bond with Dane Griffith, but he seems completely against it. She wants answers, not realizing when she was just an infant she was marked by Dane and her father holds a mean grudge that could ruin everything.
I liked this one a lot, a little too fast though. The banter between Dane and Ari is hilarious. The one thing I truly appreciated was that Dane is pure jaguar, you can visualize it with very action he takes.
This book was just pure fun, plain and simple. Except for the middle towards the end, when it gets scary. And the cliffie ending (which isn’t about the couple at all, but another character and a cave man/cave wolf, which will be the next book). But it’s not really a bad cliff, because you know that there will be a lot of sex in the first few pages of the next book.
I loved Ari and Dane. They were both funny as all hell, and snarky and hot. Yes, this book was hot. It was also 90 degrees outside when I read this, and heat stroke can kill, you know…just sayin’. They almost have sex in their animal forms, and considering that she’s a wolf (and a deer!) and he’s a puma, that would truly be interspecies romance. But fortunately they turn human again, and the authorities need not be contacted.
There are two books before this, which are the stories of Ari’s and Dane’s parents. If I paid attention, I would have read them first. Ah well, they’re all stand alones anyway.
So here are two issues I have with the book:
Her name is Ari. Which is cool, because I have a cousin Ari. Excepts my Ari is a he. But at least she wasn’t named Whisper or Ember or Misery – names you will never, ever see (or Ever for that matter) in real life. But his name is Dane. There are a lot of Danes in books (most are not from Denmark, to clarify). I’ve never met a Dane in real life (the name, not the person from Denmark – I’ve met quite a few of those). I’ve met a lot of people. Now Dane is not a particularly weird name – authors seem to reserve the more bizarre ones for the female MCs. But I wonder – do the authors just sit around for days trying to come up with strange names? Do they have online support groups that offer hints and such?
Also – Ari is a wolf…and a deer. Now, besides the fact that her father is a purebred wolf and her mother is human, I have no idea where this ungulate streak comes from (deer, elk and bison are ungulates – trust me – I work in a wolf sanctuary. Ungulates are feasted upon regularly.). But – how can you possibly be predator and prey at the same time? Doesn’t that cause severe psychological issues? Wolves will sometimes chase their tails, like dogs. What happens if their tail is deer? Do they then commit ritualistic self….dinner? Very strange.
None of this really impacts upon the book – I just like “listening” to myself write. This book was awesome. You should read it. I will read the first two and the next one. I am hooked.
Mine. Every PNR fan I know gets giddy goosebumps when they see those four letters italicized on their page, and I'm no exception. I read this book in one day and I loved it. I have to catch up books one and two and see if book four is out. This one book made this series an instant hit with me. I absolutely love stories about mated shifters. This one is terrific with lots of action, heat, and a few tender moments sprinkled in.
Right away you get to meet Ari, who is a wolf and deer shifter. How cool is that? But her wolf is predominant. And when we first meet her she is trying to get her cat out of a tree. She loves cats, but for the life of her, she can't keep one as a pet. This whole scene made me giggle. Then Dane comes along, and it is a good thing that Ari lives in a half-breed shifter community, Dane makes sure of that. My giggles stopped and the swoon started! Wooooo, talk about hot!
Dane right off the bat had that smart ass edge to him, which I loved. He helps Ari, and informs her that she is his mate and they actually already know eachother. The care in his eyes really endears him to me. You can tell he loves her, and has always loved her. That jaguar has a whole lot of swagger, and I couldn't get enough of him from the first page to the last.
Then, as the story goes on and things come to light, other things are set metaphorically on fire between the two of them. This book was awesome in all aspects. I think the idea of hybrid shifters is great, and to pair a wolf with a deer in a woman? Awesome!! And when stuff goes down, and everyone's back is against the wall, the action and drama were exciting. So yep, I'm a fan for sure now. Like I said, I have to catch up on the rest of this series - but I definitely will. I think if you are looking for something hot and exciting, with some great comebacks and strong characters, this is definitely a series to check out.
This is actually my favorite out of Miranda Stowe's Half-breed Shifter series with the exception of Book one. In "Mates Since Birth" Ari Fallow is born from a human mother and a half-deer/wolf shifter father. Because of a complication following her birth, young half-human/part-jaguar shifter Dane Griffin saves her by biting her and forever binding them to one another.
HOWEVER OF COURSE, when Ari's father gets wind of what Dane has done he relocates his family leaving Dane without his mate and Ari unaware of their bond.
Years pass and Ari grows up to become a beautiful woman. She meets Dane again who informs her of their bond but is determined to sever ties between them now that he's found her again. What at first starts as a mission to put Ari behind him turns into a charade of playing for keeps. Especially after when the game of love comes to play and Ari and Dane's lives come at stake.
.............. My comments:
This book was totally up my league!! Dane was so smexily stubborn and Ari was strong willed and beautiful.
"Mates Since Birth" moves at a nice pace and keeps readers interested in engaged. I'm now dying to read the next book in the series and to see the fate of how Dane's sister and the hunter who has her prisoner's love story unfolds.
I had to struggle to finish this book. I didn't connect at all with the characters. How could I when there was no time to learn much about anyone? Ari is stubborn. That's literally all there was to learn about her. She was rather annoying overall. Dane wasn't much better. One minute he's hot and cocky, and the next he wants to break the bond. Really he was just as bad. Of course I had the thought that I doubt he could really be an OBGYN since male shifters are so protective of their mates, getting especially jealous when other males are around. How could they let Dane be there when their mates are so vulnerable? I also couldn't believe what an ass Knox was. So glad I haven't read his book...
All in all, I'm thankful I didn't spend a lot on this story. I read book 5 in this series first, although that book was marginally better than this one.
I'll admit straight-up that I didn't read the first two books in this series, but that turned out fine since these are basically standalones.
The book was quite good and I loved Ari and Dane. Got a tad confused at some times but overall it was a great book that managed to capture my attention from start to finish (I love me some semi-cliché novellas).
At seven years old Dane, already had a bond with a mate. His human nanny is pregnant and delivering her little girl, Ari. Dane has been talking to her while she is in the womb and already knows she is special to him. When she is born, her mom was in danger and is bleeding. Dane has to talk the baby out of the room. He is seven so he doesn't know how to help her. He bites her neck to help protect her. But by doing so, also binds the two for life. When Ari's father comes in, he is furious. He understands what this young cub has just done to his newborn. Five years go by and the two just grow closer. More of a close sibling bond because of their ages. Until Ari and her family disappear and break Danes heart. 20 years later Ari is a young woman living close to her parents, when she gets stuck in a tree. Low and behold a young, very handsome man from her past comes to her rescue.
This was a very well done book. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing. The connection between Dane and Ari, is magnetic. Great start and unique. The ending starts part 2, which I already picked up, and looking forward to starting it. Defiantly an author to keep your eye on. Thanks for the great read. juliesbookreview.blogspot.com
Mates Since Birth is a quick, fun, steamy read. Dane is a young boy afraid that his nanny and her child will die. The baby girl, Ari, is born but in distress, and Dane helps soothe her the only way he knows--hence the title mates since birth.
After a separation Dane finds Ari and strips..giving Ari a good view of what she's been missing. I thought this part was hilarious. Rarely does a story even a novella jump right in and describe body parts. The storyline had many different twists and there was friction between Dane and Ari and so much discord between Dane and Ari's father that it almost cost them their lives. The story was funny, sweet, sexy, and very enjoyable. My heart broke for Dane, but I was so impressed with the strength of his character and his fight for what was his. He was my favorite character. Ari's dad was my least favorite character. He was stubborn to a fault.
There won't be any great surprises or revelations in this book, but if you're looking for a quick, hot read that keeps you engaged this is it.
I really enjoyed the beginning when little 7 yr old Dane realized the newborn babe, Ari was his mate. It was so precious how protective and caring he was for her. I liked how the attachment wasn't sexual, but a true soul bonding when they were both young. It was so sweet.
Fast forward 25 years and Dane comes looking for his mate to try to break their bond. Well, I will say no more than that. You will just have to read for yourself.
Dane was a yummy Alpha that loved his kick-a$$ mate, Ari. Lots and lots of steamy sex, with no cheating.
"4.5 out of 5 stars, two young mates grow up to find that distance does make the heart grow fonder! I was thoroughly intrigued with this novella, from the erotic scenes to the sweet emotions surrounding this spicy couple."
I love this series. I couldn't wait for this book. I loved how it brought us up to speed on the Griffins and Rolands. Ari and Dane so deserve to be happy and be together. And of course Ms. Stowe left us with a cliff hanger. I can't wait to see what happens with Brynn.
For me this could have been a 5 stars book but what made the book lose the final star was the ending!! It didn't feel like Ari & Dane's story truly ended or that they now had their HEA .. I wish they had their own Epilogue ..
