Ringgold Wilmer Lardner was an American sports columnist and short story writer best known for his satirical takes on the sports world, marriage, and the theatre.
A pretty acute study of white people in American before the depression. Dialogue that crackles. Ring was born to write it. The breadth of experience is narrow but boy is it well treated, and funny.
One can see why Salinger gives a shout out to Lardner in "Catcher in the Rye". Lardner's influence is obvious and is also evident in Hemingway and Runyon. Enjoyable stories from the teens and 1920s with old-time snappy, witty dialogue and dynamic words and turns of phrase that have fallen out of use.
