Read and find out about how whales are mammals—just like us—in this colorfully illustrated nonfiction picture book. What do dogs, pigs, whales, and people have in common? They are all mammals. Whales may seem like enormous fish, but they are really mammals like dogs and pigs and people. They breathe air through lungs, they are warm-blooded, and they have hair. Baby whales even drink milk—just like people do! I think this is a cute book to introduce young readers to the idea of mammals vs fish in the ocean. It describes much about the life cycle of whales and how they need to breathe air from above the water unlike fish. The illustrations are nice. I did have some lingering questions about the anatomy of these whales. I can't recall ever having seen a whale's nipples and I can't see how the giant mouth on those calves is able to suck on the teat. I googled it and now know a little too much about whale anatomy. :)
I think this is one of my new favorite books. I mean, we all know whales are mammals and therefore they must nurse their young, but how many books actually talk about it. And how does a baleen whale nurse? Well, this book talks about it. It also has other really great information about whales, mostly humpback whales.
Baby whales drink milk by barbara juster esbenson Read this in a kindergarten room, it looks at the life cycle and seasonal movements of humpbacked whales, talks about the similarities of mammalian adaptations and how whales and dolphins are different, and similar.
This is a very easy book to read though the concepts and information are packed into the pages. The pictures are interesting and the words are understandable! I loved reading about baby whales and their journey into adulthood; I definitely recommend this book!
