Pieces of terror, pieces of suspense, pieces of darkness combine to create Pieces of Hate, master storyteller Ray Garton's short story collection. Nine works, including A Gift From Above, a new novel that will surely hit you from below, are here compiled for the sole purpose of scaring you onto the next page. Garton illuminates the dark corners in us all and highlights the depths of the human condition. He takes our ordinary, daily assumptions and turns them on the reader to frightening effect. He makes reading terrifying yet compulsive. He scares us in so many ways. Here are a but a few in one collection.
Ray Garton is the author of several books, including horror novels such as LIVE GIRLS (which has a movie in the works), CRUCIFAX, E4 AUTUMN, and THE FOLKS; thrillers like TRADE SECRETS and SHACKLED; and numerous short stories and novellas. He's also written a number of movie and television tie-ins for young readers. He lives with his wife, Dawn, in California.
I got this one with KU and got the audio for free. This is a review of the audio edition.
A good and eclectic mix of shorts from Mr. Garton. Alien gifts from above, High School reunions, kitty’s revenge, Lawrence Welk, erotic horror authors and the Devil himself. Yep. 3+ Stars.
A very enjoyable collection with as the title suggests all linked by hate. Particularly enjoyed the final story concerning a preacher who tries to convince his congregation that it is wrong to protest with hate against a writer at a local bookstore….everyone should have a right to their opinion so long as it does not infringe the lives of others. An ending to die for😄
Some stories were entertaining in a Twilight Zone kinda way. Others were preachy mcpreachy and sapped my enthusiasm for this collection. Regardles of your political bent, I cannot recommend.
Personally, I think Garton's short fiction may very well be even better than his novels. That's an observation, not a criticism...just so we're clear. I highly recommend this one folks.
I really didn't like this one. Most disappointing was "The Devil's Music," where Satan declared his hatred and boredom for heavy metal. Of course Old Scratch would love the most exciting music in the world that pisses off many a Christian. And that thing "Satan" said about metal bands liking little boys,so not true. I'm a metalhead and only like women.
I really enjoyed this, and part of that is because I agree with the writer's political views on the points where they are portrayed. But even beyond that there is no arguing that the writing is good and the situations unique and the horror is horrific for sure. Pretty big fan of this.
I like Mr. Garton's work, and have read quite a few good books by him, but to be brutally honest many of the stories in this collection just came across as heavy-handed political and moral satire that just kind of sucked most of the enjoyment right out of them...
