Aberdeen Pack #2

Julian's Happy Place

Rate this book
[Siren Classic ManLove: Erotic Alternative Paranormal Romance, M/M, shape-shifters, HEA]

Djal was just trying to do his duty as beta of his pack when he made one small mistake, and now he has a pack member chasing after him, intent on mating him. If Djal doesn’t figure out how to stop Julian’s obsession with him, he just might strangle the man.

Julian has lived through hell, more so than most people know. When freedom comes, Julian is still faced with people out to harm him. The mere sight of the big, strong beta makes Julian feel safer. One night spent together convinces Julian that Djal would be the perfect mate. He just has to catch Djal first.

When Djal discovers that someone is abusing Julian, the protective streak he tried so hard to control breaks free. It goes way beyond what Djal knows he should feel for a mere pack member, and only by giving in to Julian can Djal come to terms with the need growing inside of him. But before Djal can save Julian, he has to figure out who is after him, and Julian isn’t talking.

When I need a sappy shifter hurt/comfort this is the book.

------------------------------

I really loved this. It was OTT syrupy sweet, but oh man, the hurt/comfort!!

This started out just wonderful. With Julian, who’s totally smitten with the pack’s beta, Djal. But with Djal rejecting Julian because he’s sure a mate will interfere with his duties.

Julian has been severely abused his entire adult life since his former alpha forced him to mate with a sadistic pack member. When that pack member is killed by his new alpha, Julian is finally free. When Djal and Julian spend a night together (off page, apparently sometime during the events of the first book), Julian is convinced Djal is his one true love. But when Djal rejects him, Julian is crushed.

But then the brother of his former abuser comes back to teach Julian a lesson….

I was in hurt/comfort heaven with this. Especially the first half was amazing! Julian was heartbroken and sad because he thought no one can ever love him and then he got beaten up and abused for some time before Djal found out and went all cave men on him.

I do have to admit that there was a bit of magical healing through dick going on that was a bit unbelievable. I mean, Julian was still scared and jumpy, but apparently totally able to enjoy sex with Djal while he had just been raped for a week (again). I would have loved it if the sex hadn’t happened for a while. But these are wolves and Julian did choose Djal as his mate, so the mating was more instinct. So that made it a little bit okay for me. If these were humans I wouldn’t have accepted it like this.

If you’re a die-hard hurt/comfort fan like me and enjoys the big bad wolf protecting his smaller, abused mate, then try reading this.

I wouldn’t recommend reading this as a stand-alone.

Aberdeen Pack series went up a notch with Julian's Happy Place.🙌🏽

Stormy Glenn knows how to bring to life emotions. I felt Julian's anguish, his miserable existence. Betrayed, abused, terrorized by those who were suppose to protect him. And when he finally meets a shifter who could protect and care for him, the feelings aren't returned. The one person who he needed, who would hold the fear at bay didn't want him back. Poor Julian, I felt his terror, his embarrassment, his pain, his desperation.

Djal, Beta wolf of Aberdeen Pack isn't in a position to take a mate. His life, his duty is to the pack and its Alpha. He is so set in his ways. Regardless of his feelings, his duty comes first and a mate is a distraction. Gosh Djal drove me up a wall. So many mistakes. He had no idea what he was doing with Julian, someone who's lived his life in absolute fear. He definitely fumbled his way through the healing/comfort part of the story.

I really enjoyed this one. But, it's not perfect.
A few editing niggles that stood out.
Julian's relationship with sex after all he's been through doesn't particularly ring true. But, this is fiction, and I'm going to enjoy the unrealistic pace of his healing.
It's also not on Kindle Unlimitted. 😭 Alas, it's worth the price.

Highly recommend this series for Shifter lovers!! I guess it could be a stand-alone, but a lot of world-building happens in book one and the characters are introduced there as well.

Ignore the atrocious cover *side-eyeing it*. This book is from 2012🤷🏽‍♀️
Why is it always that the gorgeous Shifter covers lead to mediocre reads and the awful ones lead to addictive binge-worthy ones? It's a mystery

As the second volume in the series, this book takes up the pack beta's story, and it turns out to be quite the tale! After the initial takeover of the troubled pack by Alpha Iben, there is lots more work to do to make this a secure place. We also find out how much has been going on behind the scenes, and the sinister plot of those wanting to take over is partially revealed. The villains are super-evil, and the good guys a bit clueless in the beginning, but it is all in the interest of creating an entertaining read.

Djal has stood by Iben, the new Aberdeen pack alpha we met in 'Pocket Sized Prince', for decades, and now his loyalty is challenged, at least in his mind: he thinks he cannot devote himself to keeping the pack safe at the same time as caring for and protecting a mate. And he thinks the pack is more important. It was fun watching him begin to see the error of his ways as the realization that he cannot fight his attraction to Julian slowly takes over. Djal has a long way to go, but once he gets a clue, he doesn’t let anyone or anything stop him.

Julian has suffered unimaginable hardship, both physical and emotional, and his reaction to Djal's rejection is utter devastation. I hated that he had to go through all of that, and the repeat violence while Djal was still figuring things out and they kept going back and forth. He has so much fight in him though, that he actually manages to survive – again. He deserves to reach his "happy place", as he calls his mated life with Djal, and I rooted for him all the way.

If you enjoy werewolf stories about pack members trying to find their place, if you like reading a series where individual stories link into a bigger picture (which is suitably dark), and if you're looking for a read with very hot man-on-man action on top of all that, you will probably like this book.

The only thing that seriously just pissed me off, threw me completely off that I contemplated stopping where I was and just chuck the book aside....

Was the misspell --- on page 69 (pdf copy)
"Djal pinned Seth against his chest..." -- Who the FUCK is Seth?!? The character's name is JULIAN!!
THE BOOK IS CALLED 'JULIAN'S HAPPY PLACE' FOR THE LOVE OF *---!
KILLED the moment. Just... I had to stop for a while.

___ But you know what? The stuff that happened after that AND the lovely overall end made me fall in love all over again. So... still got 5 stars. Seriously, up until the WRONG name the book was AMAZING, even after yes... still amazing. Love.

But you have no idea how much CHARACTER NAME MISTAKES spoil everything for me. Seriously, TOTAL FAIL, Siren! I can take punctuation and other spelling mistakes but Names... UGH! PLEASE watch out more for NAME mistakes. That really kills the joy for a book. Especially if it's in one of the steamy parts!

I totally loved this one. I just wanted to hold Julian and never let him go. I was very happy to see him get an HEA. He totally deserved it after the hell he went through. I loved him and Djal together. They made a great couple.

Again, mixed feelings.

To begin with, I found it interesting that Julian’s motivation to pursue Djal lay in his need of protection rather than passion or attraction as such. Fits with the character. Long-term abuse will do that to a person, shift their view to bargaining for safety. However, what I don’t get is why Julian did not ask Iben for help . Or anyone, really. Hell, Zack was supposed to be his friend.

Some retcon about the way the mating bond works, but I won’t quibble with that. Too used to it in series of this ilk.

Still, I was following along with the story until the mountain. That scene when Djal

Once the viewpoint switched to Djal and we got an explanation of his inner workings I suppose it did make a tiny bit more sense. It’s still stupid but eh.

Next, Iben suddenly was a lot less powerful, everyone’s protestations notwithstanding. What happened to his magical tricks? Or why not just break down the door and tear the villain’s head off?

Oh well. I know I am being ranty. It’s just, when a book almost really works for me I get twitchy. In spite of things that frustrated me, I still felt drawn into the proceedings and I did care about what happened, cared about the characters. (Some of that may be my soft spot for abuse victims.) It’s just that I have no clue what to make of it, how to evaluate the thing as a whole.

This was all over the place, I liked the first book in this series even though it was a pace that I don't enjoy (and why I don't usually like Stormy Glenn, WARP SPEED, INSTALOVE)) but the second book was a disappointment with the pacing, inexplicable decisions (Julian NOT telling anyone about his abuse, Djal leaving him on the mountain, etc, etc etc) and total lack of believable story continuity. What happened to Iben's "powers". A bomb, really? I suspended belief in sheer enjoyment of the first book but no can do with this one.

Flawed but fun. Julian's Happy place was entertaining , despite or may be because of it's weak plot, gigantic potholes and illogical behavior of it's characters. 90% of the time there were several more natural , not to mention logical option available making me think :" really? but why not ..., or ..., or even...?" and at the other 10% I was asking myself :" Well wasn't that obvious? and even if he misunderstood, wouldn't the natural reaction be .....???!!!!! or ....? or even ...?"
Some parts of this book were obviously copied and pasted from another but not properly edited so at some point , there is suddenly out of the blue a character named Seth ! LOL
The book is packed with avoidable, sometimes silly and flawed action. sometimes it's so ridicules that is rather fun!
The out of character reaction of the alpha at the end of the book, which, i guess, was supposed to be funny is rather a big flaw. Now that I think about it the last chapter, including the action and the monologuing antagonist , was rather stupid!
The whole thing was so stupid that I had actually fun reading it. so all in all I guess it was better than the first volume of this series.

While Djal is clueless to what he really wants when its following and stalking him, once he gets what he wants, meaning Julian to stop stalking him, he soon finds out differently. It still takes him awhile to figure it out but in the meantime he goes after Julian who's disappeared after his house is completely trashed.

I really liked that Djal is completely torn up that even after they've finally mated that Julian is scared of him and not afraid to show Julian that he's upset with himself for scaring him in any way. I've always thought a 'real' man doesn't hide their emotions from their partner. Julian proves that he very resilient in all that he's been through and that he has a head on his shoulders.

The mystery expands to more pack members than was reported to Iben and in the course of events we learn a bit behind it, along with new characters that are very badass. Looking forward to the next book.

It was better than the first book. There is actual love involved. It takes a while and with some miscommunication (always a buzz kill), but it is there in the end. I loved Julian. I had to warm up to Djal. Julian was so hurt in his past, he needed Djal to protect him. But Djal is not ready to have a mate to protect. So Julian ends up in more danger. Luckily Djal gets his act together and the couple live HEA. There were some strange inconsistencies in this book. In book one the alpha is almost unbeatable. Not so much in this book. Apparently the enemies are not so easily conquered by the alpha. They get away al least two times. And the most annoying thing? Right in the middle of some smexy times Julian's name changes into Seth. That is just awful. So I'm just giving this book the 3 I-liked-it stars, because it could have been better.

'tsa horrible cover. The dude looks like one of those computer generated images of a Neanderthal or something. A well-groomed Neanderthal, though; I'll give him that.

I dunno if I was distracted or something, but the whole thing seemed rather scattershot to me. And have I mentioned the godawful cover? It has a godawful cover. Oh, yeah. And the cover.

I wanted to like it cuz trauma, and you know how much I love trauma (chances are you probably don't know, but I just told you, so no excuses), but it...I dunno. It had its moments. And then it was stupid. And then I wanted to face-palm myself into unconsciousness. So...well, it at least had its moments?

2.5? I really don't know how to rate these books to be honest. They're not horrid, but they're not awesome. mediocre, I guess? That being said, these types of books are my own form of soap operas and I can't seem to stop reading them, so I'll no doubt read any others of the series. Heh.

Noticed an error --
"Djal pinned Seth against his chest and moved his lips over the man's jaw, kissing a line to his swanlike neck." (pg 59 on my eReader).

Totally took me out of the scene and make me go huh?

I love this author and I love this book. The characters r wonderful and the two MCs are perfect for each other. I thought Djal was a bit mean at first ur as the story went on I warmed up to him and found him to b an admirable character. Julian haunted by his past which still follows him grows significantly in this book at the start he would never b able to stand up for himself about anything but at the end he even has the alpha Ilben running to do his bidding which I found fitting

Second read: I think I enjoyed this story more the second time around. Djal and Julian are still very adorable together, and I appreciated the storyline better.

Really enjoyed this story although not as much as I did book one. However, the Aberdeen Pack series is still quite the favorite of mine and I'm looking forward to more books.
Djal and Julian were good and believable together. The bad guys were a little over the top which sort of put a damper on some of my enjoyment.

i had to be out of my mind to start reading a second book when i didn't like the first one, but i wanted to see why ppl rate it so high (almost 4 star star is high).

I have NO idea! this is horrible. the writting is just terrible, the plot is worst than in harlequins, i get it that Julian belongs to You, Beta, no need to talk about it all the time. OMG, i think i am a masochist for even opening this book.

2 1/2 stars. What a disappointment. Between the torture, off screen-rapes and the comedy...yes, comedy, this book did not have a true direction. Since I loved the first book, I was extremely perplexed when this novel didn't live up to the prequel.

So poor Julian continues to get beat and raped multiple times in this story. Yet, he's sane enough to mate, fall in love and have consensual sex with his mate without being scarred? Sure.

I honestly don't even want to rate this book. You can't become someones mate out of pity with no romantic, mental, emotional or physical connection what so ever. Julian is an incredibly annoying character, yeah Stormy we get it, you want to show Julian's horrible life, no need to put it in every sentance in the entire book. Every time we switch to Julian's POV it's so self pitying and full of victimization, repeating the same thing over and over again. The only reason he even wants Djal is to be protected, that's not good enough of a reason to spend your life with someone, it's also incredibly selfish. Also, just because a guy is small doesn't mean he can't protect himself, unbelievable. Overall the book lacks depth, romance, world building, context and any sort of relatablity to the characters. Big no. Just no.

Well, this was cute as fuck with just enough angst to keep the story interesting. Sometimes you just want fluff.
My only issue is Julian's abrupt personality change near the end. It felt like there was no build up to it so the payoff wasn't there.

4.25 Kisses!!

Stormy Glenn writes paranormal romances that I personally enjoy. Her shifters, vampires and aliens are always fun and interesting characters to me, so when I’m looking for an easy, sexy read that will give me an hour or two of escapism from my everyday life, I’ll reach for her books time and time again.

Julian has lived through a lot of abuse. He’s been treated unfairly and hurt both physically and emotionally by his former pack members. So when Djal showed him compassion and was friendly towards him, Julian was smitten. But once they had a quick one-nighter together, Julian immediately got it in his head and heart that Djal was the mate he’s always longed to have.

When it comes to love and romance, Djal has a love ‘em and leave ‘em attitude. Although he likes Julian and enjoyed their night together between the sheets, he doesn’t want a commitment and he’s irritated by Julian’s determination to have him as a mate. But, when Julian overhears Djal discuss the problem he has with their alpha, Julian realizes he’s been chasing a dream and knows in Djal’s eyes that he’s been acting like a fool. Julian immediately stops perusing Djal and decides to go on with his life.

Djal quickly realizes he’s made a mistake. As soon as Julian stops hanging around him, he misses his smile, his friendliness and the star-struck way Julian used to look at him. Now, the shoe is on the other foot and Djal must convince Julian he really wants him. But Julian’s life continues to be in danger, and before Djal knows it, he can lose the man he’s ever come to love.

When I read this book, the saying, ‘be careful for what you wish for’ reminded me of what Djal in particular went through. In the beginning of the story, he’s truly irritated with Julian’s affection for him, but once he loses it, his fear of commitment, love and all around stubbornness almost causes him to lose his mate forever.

Although I really liked Djal, there were times I wanted to strangle him. How could he not want the sweet and sexy, Julian? I will say he’s never intentionally a jerk to Julian. He tries to let him down easy, and once Julian overhears the negative comments he made about him, Djal was truly contrite. I liked watching his feelings and respect for Julian grown and flourish as the story continued and all in all I really liked him as a character.

Julian of course was my favorite hero. He’s sweet, determined and is stronger emotionally than he realizes. I loved his spunky attitude at times as well as his devotion and love for Djal. I liked how he is a survivor and refused to be a victim of his abusive past.

Julian’s Happy Place is the second book in the Aberdeen Pack series. I’ve read both books in the series and I’ve really liked both of them. The heroes in the first book definitely play a part in the second book, but because the story is well-written it could easily be read as a stand-alone in the series. I do recommend reading all of the books in series order. This way you’ll truly understand the dynamics between all of the characters and enjoy the story that they tell.

Julian’s Happy Place is filled with sexy shifters, a lot of action and adventure and plenty of romance to keep fans of paranormal romances very satisfied. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series and hope that it’ll be released soon! Recommended!

The Aberdeen Pack books in series order are:

Although i thought this one to be better than the previous book. This also has a lot of unnecessary drama. Like (and very much spoiler alert ahead :D) Besides the annoying and unnecessary drama, i pretty much liked the ending i was rooting for Julian big time :D.

Charnel‘s review posted on Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

4 STARS

Julian’s Happy Place is second in the Aberdeen Pack Series. The pack changed Alphas in book one and book two starts off almost immediately after book one ends; continuing with the beta Djal’s story. There’re still disloyal members in the pack and in the process of finding them out a pack member, Julian, gets caught in the middle.

Julian is a pack member that has been used and greatly abused. From the previous book the reader knows Julian’s self-esteem is shot. The poor man is so sure the only people that want him are the ones that want to abuse him.

Djal makes Julian’s situation much worse, the beta starts off rejecting Julian and breaking his heart. It’s so hard to connect with Djal because he seems emotionless in the beginning. Djal learns his lesson but I stayed mad at him. Julian on the other hand is perfect; the fear coming from Julian throughout the book is real, his pain is real and I absolutely loved Julian from the start.

Djal has to work hard to get Julian’s trust back but I can defiantly see these two being a power couple in future books.
*Book is not a standalone.
