Set in the early 1960s, The Mystery of the Caribbean Pearls follows young Biff Brewster as he visits his Uncle Charlie to discover priceless pearls in Martinique. Even worse, his uncle's friend has gone missing, leaving behind an anxious yet determined son. It is up to Biff Brewster and his new friend Derek to adventure through the Caribbean, dodging nefarious looters and kidnappers to find the hidden treasure and rescue Derek's father.
Andy Adams is the Grosset & Dunlap pseudonym for three writers who authored the Biff Brewster series of adventure and mystery novels for adolescent boys in the early and mid-1960s. The real-world authors were Walter B. Gibson, Edward Pastore, and Peter Harkins.
Biff is invited to spend some time in the Caribbean by his uncle, Charles Keene (I wonder if he was related to Carolyn?), during a school break, and finds mystery and adventure awaiting him. Uncle Charlie's friend has gone missing after discovering a valuable pearl bed. Biff meets the man's son, Derek, who happens to look just like Biff. There's an evil profiteer who's trying to steal the claim, and the three spend a lot of time SCUBA-diving (in between being chased and kidnapped), and trying to find Derek's father as well. Biff was the hero of thirteen novels in the early 1960's, all with exotic foreign settings and well-written adventure sequences. Most of the series books heroes of the time were paired with partners (Fran & Joe Hardy, Tom Swift & Bud Barclay, Ken Holt & Sandy Allen, Rick Brant & Scotty, etc.), but Biff always made new friends in his stories, though they sometimes returned. This is the eighth book of the series, and was a fun read.
