He’s nobody’s bitch. Until he gets a ride on the bitch seat.

Forced to apply for a job he doesn’t want, Cosmo Rawlins has only one aim in mind: fail the interview and get back to making music. Except his attempt to shock the older, sharp-suited Alasdair Grant doesn’t have the desired effect.

Instead of getting thrown out of the office by flaunting an interest in BDSM, Cosmo finds himself on his knees, apologizing to the sexy, good-looking Top.

Alasdair has more important things on his mind than training a novice sub, especially a rebellious bad boy like Cosmo. But there’s something beneath the younger man’s defiant attitude that’s too intriguing to ignore.

As Alasdair takes Cosmo in hand—and for a wild ride on his Harley—he becomes obsessed with bending the young rocker to his will, both in and out of bed. Until he goes one demand too far, and Cosmo is gone in a cloud of dust. Forcing Alasdair to admit that earning Cosmo’s loyalty—and love—will involve the toughest challenge he’s ever faced.

Product Warnings

This title contains an overbearing Top with a less-than-glamorous job, a rebellious brat who refuses to call him sir, and a total lack of high-end BDSM clubs or playrooms. Expect floggings over the kitchen table instead.

English through and through, Josephine Myles is addicted to tea and busy cultivating a reputation for eccentricity. She writes gay erotica and romance, but finds the erotica keeps cuddling up to the romance, and the romance keeps corrupting the erotica. She blames her rebellious muse but he never listens to her anyway, no matter how much she threatens him with a big stick. She's beginning to suspect he enjoys it.

Impeccable writing from the talented Josephine Myles. This book is Excellent… a journey of discovery for an endearing smartarse sub and an irresistible overbearing Dom… loved it!

 photo 3056790a-c8ed-4bd1-a827-38696863ade0.jpg

When you start a book and you get treated to an image of the Dom having George Clooney good looks, wears leather, has tattoos and rides a Harley… Yowza!! you know you are in for a treat!! The tale unfolds from both characters POV, and Ms Myles totally gave us two characters that were both believable and with very distinct personalities. The writing was excellent and had me engrossed from the beginning, being British I so got Cosmo’s snarky sense of humour and he had me laughing on more than one occasion, in fact he just had me smiling all the way through I just loved him so much. Alasdair is a more intense character, stoically guarded and aloof, the complete opposite end of the spectrum from Cosmo, and his development was more of a slow process.

Initially, I wasn’t feeling Alasdair as the all powerful Dom… mainly because he had little or no control over our wayward wannabe sub. But as the relationship develops and barriers are slowly broken down their understanding of each other grows and the bond between them is undeniable. Together they were beautifully intense and erotically sensual and their love was slowly nurtured through honesty and above all trust.

“Cosmo? Do you want me to tie you up later?”

“Is that a promise?”

“Which would you like it to be?”

“Uh, I’m not sure. Would it be uncomfortable?”

“A little. You remember we discussed shibari?”

“Some kind of raw-fish thing, wasn’t it?”

Infuriating boy.

Alasdair is a self made man in the less than salubrious business of Sanitary Services, his business consumes his life and with no friends as such but rather acquaintances with whom he networks for business purposes, he is a lonely man with a deep scar on his heart that prevents him from wanting, or even having the inclination to share his life with a partner. So when this cocky arrogant little smartarse turns up for an interview with obviously no interest or inclination to even want the job, and is more interested in openly flirting with him, something sparks his interest, bringing his Dom to life and he see’s Cosmo as a challenge and the mere thought of it was warming parts of him that had been cold and indifferent for years.

Cosmo… how could you possibly not fall in love with him, he has a sharp mind and quick wit, full of attitude and confidence but just adorable. He is a guitarist and lead singer in a band, it’s going nowhere, but for Cosmo music is his life and his dream, working as a sanitary disposal operative was not! But, he does have plenty of practice at Screwing the System, turning up for the required interviews, flunking them, yet still able to claim his dole, he is a benefit scrounger that doesn’t want a full time job, it would interfere too much with his creative spirit… and after all he was going to make it big one day!?!

Only Cosmo has met his match in Alasdair, and every fibre of his being was enthralled, he is attracted to the aura of power surrounding his Boss Man and his body is tingling to respond to his commands yet his head is at the same time rebelling at the unknown, and a part of him hadn’t quite bought into the idea of this D/s situation that he had no experience with. But he is a young man dripping with testosterone and the arousal and curiosity that had been ignited by Alasdair won over and he wanted in, well, his dick wanted in… his mind was still debating, could he really put away his stubborn pride and subjugate himself?

Alasdair tasted like one of those premium lagers you get in fancy, expensive bottles, and other guys were like the insipid, watery stuff that comes in a multi-pack deal.

Alistair is arrogant, controlling and organised, he wants to take charge of Cosmo, all his instincts were crying out to cherish his boy, to keep him safe and protect him but Cosmo finds orders frustrating, it’s not in his nature to take orders, Cosmo would rather rebel against authority than follow rules and guidelines. Initially I think Alasdair wanted to tame the wild animal in Cosmo, but that was never going to happen! I could totally see where he was coming from, he wanted a better life for him and instil some self respect but Cosmo is not going to respond to controlling without compassion and his honesty that knows no filter tells it straight and isn’t the least bit intimidated.

“And I’ve got you a present to say sorry for being an arrogant shit”

“What, yesterday? Or in general?”

“Brat.”

These two characters through out hint at a painful past giving them both reasons to be weary of relationships, and their journey of understanding and compromise brings them to a place where they learn to share their feelings and put their trust in one another, but can Alasdair learn not to suffocate his boy’s personality and can Cosmo respect and trust his Boss Man in the bedroom?

For me, the last half of this book came to life and had me turning the pages like nobody's business, I just couldn’t get enough. It was compelling and intense and the sex was sizzling…  Alistair proved to be the tummy tingling, drop to your knees all powerful Dom I so love and I need to mention Cosmo’s Nan (Sylvia) as she actually reminds me of my own mother, eccentric and a hoarder but it was more the fierce pride and love that Cosmo had for the woman that had raised him which touched my heart and this comment on their visit… classic if you are a Brit!

“I’ll go get the kettle on” Sylvia was saying. “I’ve got Mr. Kipling’s Fondant Fancies”

So Josephine Myles… you are now without a doubt an auto buy for me, I love your sense of humour, you certainly know how to weave a wonderful tale and I hope your muse continues to be rebellious… and the thought of you shaking a stick at him… well, that just makes me smile. A fabulous book, highly recommended.

3.5 Stars for The Blog Of Sid Love

This book has been on my list to read for AGES! So in an effort to dwindle the pile I dragged my feet and threw myself onto my loveseat, puffing out the biggest sigh. I don’t know why, I just thought it was going to be a chore. Shrugs.

But then this happened …

“So, Mr. Grant, (… ) Are you a hands-on kind of boss?”

“I prefer to keep a professional distance from my employees.”

“So if I wanted to get to know you better, more intimately”—

—“I’d have to fail this interview.” “Fail it? But you’re doing so well.”

“Let’s just say I have a few extracurricular activities that might interfere with my ability to sit down and drive each day.”

Oh my! Can you imagine saying that to your prospective employer who’s really built and looks like George Clooney? Yeah? Okay, maybe I would too, especially if I was Cosmo and trying to sabotage the interview in favour of my dole benefits.

Turns out this book was not a chore at all. I flew through the pages with a smile on my face and a fan in my hand. This is my first Josephine Myles novel and my first impression was that her style is reminiscent of Anne Tenino, which is a good thing. The writing is a breeze, the sex is sweltering, and the characters are divine even if one of them is a cheesy Daddy type who shops at Bikers –R –Us. The humour is perfectly pitched, but unlike Tenino, it is very British for which I am forever grateful. I always get such a kick when I can so closely relate to the Briticism’s.

I know guys like Cosmo: common, cocky, confident, street smart dole scroungers with a plan to make it big, or just make it. When Cosmo hooks up with Alasdair, it’s would seem he’s landed with his arse in the lard – but he’s not a complete scrounger and he ain’t prepared to be anybody’s twink house boy either. Cosmo is not a twink; he’s a struggling musician with a kink.

Alasdair’s like a proper posh git by day and a leather wearing Top by night. He says all this cheesy stuff but the man dominates like a Master! What starts as Cosmo’s education in submissive kink quickly evolves into something more. It’s a great dynamic, not only the age gap but the issues that come from two fella’s that live on opposite sides of the class scale, and in England that is still a great divide.
In between the budding romance, the BDSM scenes (hot and hard) and the redemption of Alasdair’s guilt over the loss of a long lost lover, Myles gives us an unpretentious, humorous and unapologetically honest view of the class system in England. I just loved her perspective.

So what’s wrong with it? Well, the synopsis hints at some angst and there simply isn’t any. There was plenty of scope for it, but the author shy’s away from any anticipated conflict in favour of sweetness and humour. It’s a build-up that dwindles with a deflated soft pffzzz … just like my rating.

I do recommend this, it was good fun. Note I didn’t say clean fun, because it is quite deliciously filthy. For those who worry about the BDSM, Myles gets it right I thought. The writing, the humour, the Briticism’s, the chemistry and Cosmo, are what carried this for me, and also why I'm rounding up for GR.

If it’s on your TBR pile? Know that it’s worth your time and your money. I say go for it.

The novel length Screwing the System began its life as a 13k freebie story I wrote for the Goodreads MM Romance Group's Love is Always Write event. I hadn't originally intended to write more than that, but as I worked on the short story Alasdair and Cosmo grabbed hold of my imagination and refused to let go. The short only details their first meeting and first scene, with a conclusion that worked okay, but didn't deal with all the issues the characters had raised. Clearly there was an opportunity to write more about these two.

Turning the short into a novel presented a few challenges. I wrote the original in first person from Cosmo's perspective. I really wanted to get Alasdair's point of view across too, and was reluctant to write another first person novel after my previous two. I ended up converting three of the scenes in the short into third person, and wrote others linking them from Alasdair's third person perspective.

This was still only the beginning of the story, however. The novel deals with the start of Cosmo and Alasdair's domestic relationship, which has a certain discipline structure along the lines of a Daddy/boy relationship. The original online short even has Cosmo calling Alasdair "Daddy", but in the end I decided to change this. I know that many romance readers are uncomfortable with this term being used in a sexual relationship, and I didn't want the presence of one little word to alienate readers who would otherwise enjoy the story. To those who enjoyed that aspect of the original, rest assured the relationship dynamic remains intact; Cosmo simply chooses a different honorific this time around.

I hope this novel will appeal to those who enjoy reading about BDSM and discipline relationships, but also to those who aren't familiar with these stories. There's nothing exceptionally hardcore here as I've focused more on the relationship dynamic than the kink. That's not to say there isn't plenty of kinky sex too, but it definitely sticks to the lighter end of the BDSM spectrum.

That's all from me. I hope readers enjoy the novel, and fall in love with these characters just like I did :)

I am such a sucker for a story about two lost souls coming together and finding love and happiness and a sense of completion. We not only get this with this story, but we get a hot, steamy BDSM romp thrown in too! Hot damn, what more could you ask for? I fucking loved this book!

Highly recommended if you like beautiful, powerful men (no twinks for miles!) indulging in a sexual exchange of power, BDSM style, hurt and comfort and real emotions, and OF COURSE a fabulous HEA that will leave butterflies in your stomach.

I’ll admit it, BDSM is not my thing. Most of it frightens me, shocks me, or quite frankly, blows my mind.
I just don’t get most of it.
This book? I got it. I got the characters, and most of all…..
I adored it.

I was tip-toeing around my ‘BSDM assignment’ for our blog week. I wasn’t sure what I wanted, where to look and what to read. I asked around and was graciously directed towards ‘Screwing the System’.
What a surprising indulgence it turned out to be!

It was kinky, but not the creep me out kink. Nothing scary, no humiliation, and no scenes that left me feeling ill; it was just lovers satisfying each other….utterly and completely sating their hungers.
It was about obedience, but respectful mutual compliance. What won me over were the characters and the love they shared. Admiration and the need to please among the Boss and the Brat was a solid base for their budding relationship. Ha, and what a quirky twist of fate their first meeting was.

Adasdair may be a forty-year old suit, but beneath his shirt and tie he is hiding colorful secrets. Trapped grieving a loss from his past, he never fully embraced his future. A punk kid with an attitude might hold the power to change that. Rock star wannabe Cosmo is looking for the easy way out; until an unexpected force drives him to his knees with a desire to please. With an experienced hand he discovers hidden urges and sheds light into hollow pieces Cosmo never realized existed.

I thought the age difference might bother me; let’s face it, sixteen years is a bit of a chunk. And yet, what startled me more was how perfectly they fit together….cuff key in lock. They complimented one another immensely. As if each piece was okay alone, but together, they were stunning.

The writing was fabulous, engaging and crisp. The humor was warm and cheery. The British flare was simply splendid fun.

What truly struck me was the bond we witness fusing together. A fierce and indestructible connection occurs between the two.
It was gorgeous.
It was enlightening.
It was a gift.

There was an equal need which was likewise fulfilled. Their passion was off the charts, but it was their love that took this one over the top.
If you are looking for a spanking good time, Alasdair and Cosmo are a surefire power-play you won’t want to miss.

4 1/2 Huge Stars - a super über cute and romantic story about two gorgeous men

I started Screwing the System with great anticipation and hope about something really amusing and very captivating....

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

...and WOW, I got everything! This is perhaps not especially innovative, unusual or grand literature, but it was so darn fun and I want to hug and kiss my Kindle - because I loved my hours with these wonderful cute guys. It's this kind of cozy stories I should read more often.

...and what a good looking hottie on the cover. Mmmm..

Screwing the System is a really cuddly romantic M/M novel (about 215 pages) that was both witty, slightly cheeky and a bit kinky (light and tender D/s playing). I can certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a big pleased smile on your face the rest of the day.
‘What a grip. Cosmo had all kind kinds of naughty thoughts about where else he'd like to feel a hand like that and wondered wheter getting a boner in the interview would be something this Mr. Grant would (...)’

Alasdair Grant (40) runs a cleaning business and during a job interview, he meets the sixteen years younger Cosmo Rawlings. A pretty saucy young guy with attitude and spirit. Cosmo wants to devote his days to sing, play guitar and write new music - a job as a cleaner is not high on his wish list.

One thing leads to another (but no new job for Cosmo) and a date for some playing in Alasdair's taste is scheduled for a few evenings ahead. With instructions (tight clothing, no underwear, etc..) and some time to think, is Cosmo (..and I) both slightly nervous, excited and quite tense... But he goes to the bar and a beautiful muscular hot biker man in leather pants on a huge black Harley appear - his date in a completely different style.

...set in a tea drinking place.

For me is Scewing the System a very amusing and emotional told story about two men with tangled past experiences and a credible path towards a possible relationship despite the age difference. You don't get insta love but of course insta lust. ~ The quite rigid, harsh and domineering Alasdair softens of course. I purred with happiness to follow his awakening and inner change. I like it so much when a Dom realizes he must also show other softer sides. Vanilla is also pleasure... Cosmo on the other side realizes that he's enjoying and need the submission play a lot - but in moderate doses, on his terms and when he desires.

There are both good and bad events on the road. They have to reconcile, bitching about the rules, ask for forgiveness but eventually they begin to build something new. Of course it was a lot of sex and thoughts on various hot and hard body parts... but never too much so that the pleasant steam part took over. ~ Cuter lovebirds than Alasdair and Cosmo are scarce.
 photo image_zps54ce2719.jpg

It was both sweet and touching, but most of all fun and entertaining. For all of you who don't like when it gets too sugar sweet can I provide some reassurance. This M/M is cozy but never messy and sticky. Cosmo is a challenge for a Dom and these are two guys who play equally. Which I like!

A heartwarming story like this one is exactly what makes me so amazingly happy. I'm reminded of why I love and need to read some romances every single day....

I hesitate between four or five stars but I round up to a five because this was an easygoing and wonderful joy spreader. I just love Alasdair and Cosmo's story - they are really a quite odd and yet a very unforgettable couple. A gem that ends up on my favorite shelf.

I will no jump over to the free short sequel Screw the Fags and some more yummy good reading.

I LIKE - Shudder of delight and hugs my book..

I liked the book fine, it entertained me pleasantly. I never wanted to quit for something else, and there were zero editing or writing issues that annoyed. The only thing is I was kind of underwhelmed. I didn't feel like I read the story the blurb promised. It's definitely not a poor story; it's more that it's very understated, and there's absolutely no big 'winning back the boyfriend' plot. That whole thing in the blurb about "Until he goes one demand too far, and Cosmo is gone in a cloud of dust. Forcing Alasdair to admit that earning Cosmo’s loyalty—and love—will involve the toughest challenge he’s ever faced." Well, I don't see that as being what happened. But it was fine. I liked the book.

Another book for my BDSM & comfort-reread shelf combo. This is a funny, sweet story about a kid from the rough side of the streets, with a talent for music, who hasn't realized how much he'll like sometimes giving up control. And a Dom who grew up tough and climbed his way out, finding that his taste in subs runs to a guy with a bit of mouth on him, and a lot of heart. They work well together, despite all their differences, and the result is this short, fun, sometimes nicely emotional romp as these guys try to figure each other, and themselves, out. I liked the fact that Alasdair wasn't an all-knowing, all-seeing, always in control top. He was toppy and experienced, but not above making mistakes or letting go of rules to adapt to Cosmo. Cosmo in some ways seemed more like a masochist than a lifestyle sub. This was a book where the relationship seemed to adapt, and was somewhat different when sex wasn't immediately involved. One more variation on how people's preferences can work together with the right amount of give and take.

'Screwing the System' was a nice read, but it didn't fullfil my expectations. Cosmo and Alasdair felt emotionally flat to me and I didn't feel a connection to the MCs. I couldn't see them in my mind and I had to stop reading a few times because the story didn't have the sparkle I anticipated. Aside from that the end was a little abrupt. I had the feeling something was missing.

This was so much fun. This is my third book from Josephine Myles and I am a total fan girl. If I wasn’t following her all over social media like some creeped out creeper I would go do it immediately. I love the way she writes, she brings her characters off the page and sets them right down in front of me. I can see each scene play out in vivid imagery without the obsessed detail or drawn out language. She just nails it. Every button that I need she hits it and then some. Okay, off my fangirl rant, on to the book.

Cosmo Rawlings; a young man, a musician who is currently living off the system to further his career as the front man of ScarDue. He is doing what he needs to do to keep his benefits rolling in and going on his next interview for a job he doesn’t want. Prepared to fail the interview like the others before it he walks into the office of Alasdair Grant and gets more than an interview for a job, more like a promising position.
“You’ve behaved badly. You’re a very naughty boy.”

Arousal strummed Cosmo’s nerves, resounding through him with the echoes of those words. Oh. He hadn’t known he’d like being called that. His mind was still rebelling, saying he was an adult now, thank you very much, but his dick went BOING! when Alasdair called him boy in that stern tone.

“What have you been?” Alasdair demanded, getting to his feet.

Cosmo stared up at the wall of man muscle towering above him all pissed-off looking. Fuck, that was sexy.

Oh Yeah. That right there sets off the BEST characters, the best for this style of story. Cosmo is your run off the mill brat who is unknowingly searching for a bit of lifestyle structure and Alasdair is the bossy Dom who has a pure heart that needs to find itself the love of a sub that consumes again. Ugh. These two men killed me. I think I had to put my Nook down every 10% of the book to take deep breaths, groan, swoon, and laugh or just fall in love with them again.

From the first scene we get I knew that this would be a book to put on my favorites shelf. While they age difference is mentioned, it never was a factor to me. When you have brilliant writing like this, you focus on the characters, on their development and the attachment that comes naturally and not how old each of them might be. Even with the mention of needing a Daddy, it was a bit more tongue in cheek than literal…maybe? Maybe not. Either way, it worked for Alasdair and Cosmo perfectly. They balanced each other as couples should do. It was effortless to read their story and it was a pleasure to be invited into their personal space through their journey.
It wasn’t just that the bloke was Cosmo’s every fantasy come true, but Alasdair felt safe. Big enough to look out for him and tell him what he needed to do. And right now Alasdair was asking him to do something really very simple to make him happy. What did he have to lose?

This was told wonderfully with very little angst and no BIG misunderstanding which I loved. As a self-professed angst whore, I was delighted it wasn’t present, it wasn’t needed and for me it would not have worked. Alasdair and Cosmo have their roles, they thrive in them and they are clearly was what wanted and what makes them work so well. Though they do hit a minor bump in the road, what couple doesn’t, the way the get through it melted me into the biggest puddle. It’s a darn good thing Alasdair can send someone over to clean that up for me…I wonder if I can request a perfected posture Cosmo? Nah, the boys don’t like to share. Shame.
And I don’t know about you, but sometimes the person who makes you feel confused is the hardest person of all to share your feelings with.”

Cosmo considered that for a long moment. “Like you and me.”

Alasdair gave a wry smile. “Exactly.”

Screwing the System was a lovely, kinky, sweet, endearing, hilarious and fantastic read. I love the title, loved the moment when we GET the title included with a bit of wit in the story. I simply adored this. Every single word of it. It. Was. The. Best.

Footie note: (see what I did there? Foot note? Footie on the telly? *sigh*Oh let me be with my words would ya!) What I love about this book is how the kink was handled. It was just what these two get off on. No dramatic past abuse that led them to it. They enjoy it, it tickles their willies and makes them have some incredibly hot, sexy, sensual, intense and mind blowing scenes. I love that not only during the scenes are they fully into it but thinking of Cosmo admiring Alasdair’s work on his back simply melts me into a puddle. It’s something two consenting adults in a relationship agree on and enjoy. No special dungeons, rooms etc. It’s done in a home, in a safe environment and it was done well.
“Just sit back, relax. Tell me what you’re hoping to get out of this.”

“Does it matter?”

“Of course it does.” Alasdair sounded wounded.

“Thought this was all about what you wanted.”

“It’s about finding a way for us both to meet our needs. My pleasure is mainly in giving you what you want. In driving you out of your mind with sensation.”

Yeah this was good, gulped it down in one sitting.

I loved the hot scenes but much more than that the relationship developing between Cosmo and Alasdair outside those. The banter, the confidence in one thing and lack of confidence in another all wrapped up in one package, just like us.

I was not totally convinced by the end scene but that is too little a niggle to take away my fond feelings for the whole.

I never read Ms Myles before but I liked her style in this one and want to try more.

When readers are first introduced to Cosmo, he isn’t entirely likeable. He’d rather live on assistance while pursuing a music career than get a job to make ends meet. He thrives on playing “the system.”

But I can’t deny that his (funny) bratty attitude and antics won me over pretty quickly. He may not be the most productive member of society, but he’s got potential, if only he would put in more effort.

Alasdair realizes this about Cosmo from the start. He’s very attracted to the younger man, but Alasdair also thinks Cosmo could do with some structure in his life. Alasdair definitely has a paternalistic streak, but he’s genuinely a nice person.

Plus, he exudes sex. This is one steamy read! Cosmo and Alasdair click from their first night together, and it just gets better as the book goes on.

description

I liked that the BDSM in this book was a lot less “formal” than the usual. There are no clubs and grand rituals; just two men getting kinky together.

The relationship between Alasdair and Cosmo builds gradually. As they spend more time together, both MCs realize that their assumptions about the other weren’t entirely true.

Alasdair wants to give Cosmo structure and confidence to reach his goals, while Cosmo wants to give Alasdair back a life outside of work. The two learn together to balance work and fun. They’re happier together than they were alone.

description

This is a fairly low-drama book. The major roadblock revolves around a previous relationship of Alasdair’s and how it continues to affect him. The issue, and the resolution, was realistic.

However, there’s a problem that comes up right at the end of the book which distracted me from Cosmo and Alasdair’s happy ending. I would have liked a more concrete finish.

Even so, I enjoyed Alasdair and Cosmo’s story very much. If you’re looking for an MM opposites-attract romance with some kinky sex and not too much angst, give this book a try!

This is a sweet book about Alasdair an older (40) Dom taking on Cosmo, a younger, rebellious, musician, as his inexperienced sub. They meet Cosmo comes to him for a job interview, intending to purposely fail so he can continue to collect benefits and practice with his band. I loved the relationship between the 2 MC's and there were some good secondary characters too.

I did feel it ended somewhat abruptly, and that the blurb was a bit misleading about the conflict and Cosmo leaving. There were several storyline points that could have provided some emotional conflict, but never really did. I felt that there was just a little bit missing.

That being said this was a good love story, with some BDSM elements, but nothing too hardcore and a HEA.

Keeping this short, the problem with this book is: the synopsis promised way more drama and emotion than the story actually delivered. There was never any real doubt that the MCs would end up together. Instead of rough and conflicting and intense, it ended up just being saccharine, cliché, and superficial. I know, it's a romance, it's obvious that they'll have their happy ever after, but make it a little bit painful, won't you? I like it like that.

This book’s blurb made me raise my eyebrows and go, “Interesting,” with a cheesy accent. I’m a kinky girl through and through, so I was excited to read this one, and with a name like Josephine Myles on it, what could go wrong?

Alasdair was an incredibly hot, yet compassionate Dom, which I appreciated. The books where the Dom is unforgiving or cold hearted leave me wanting. That Cosmo was cheeky and sarcastic was just an extra bonus. Taming the sass-mouthed sub is one of my favorite BDSM tropes, and this one was done very well. When Alasdair reaches a point where he appreciates Cosmo’s sarcasm and wit and no longer wants to dominate it out of him, I sighed all gooey and warm inside.

Cosmo, while a stunning example of insubordination, also had an inner fire I found myself admiring. He made me laugh, sometimes in public, earning me strange looks. The chemistry between Cosmo and Alasdair was unmistakable. They were so hot together.

So where’d the book lose in the rating? I kept expecting a conflict to arise, and not much did. Sure, the pair had their bumps, and the blurb alludes to Alasdair making a mistake and Cosmo taking off, but if this was the main hurdle of the plot, it happened too early in the story for me to realize it was the climax.

There was potential for greater fireworks in a couple different plotlines—with Alasdair’s newest possible client and neighborhood friend who doesn’t know he’s gay or a Dom, or with Cosmo’s grandmother being swept up in the cogs of business dealings. The solution Alasdair came up with made total sense, but it came without any work.

The plot line I would have thought to create the greatest tension between Alasdair and Cosmo was the allegiance Cosmo had to his band and how one of the band members undermined Cosmo’s success. While it worked out that Cosmo came to his own conclusion about the band and his place in it, either the tension with his friends could have been used to greater advantage, or the strain it put on Alasdair’s patience with Cosmo could have created a stronger conflict to be overcome.

Overall, entertaining story, hot characters, sometimes brilliant descriptions that left me rereading some passages, but there just wasn’t enough meat on the bone to make it as well rounded a read as it could have been. Solid C List.

Wow, what a treat this one was! Josephine Myles is awesome. I absolutely love her writing style and totally adored her characters. Alasdair Grant is a know-it-all, over-confident, workaholic control freak. In other words, he's DOM. He meets and falls in love with an irreverent, sassy, non-conformist punk named Cosmo. Alasdair is forty and owns his own company, while Cosmo, just twenty-four, doesn't even have a job. Cosmo is a struggling artist--an aspiring musician. Although talented, he lacks focus and direction in his life and is in a go-nowhere band. Alasdair hates all these things about his new boyfriend, and additionally he tries to control even the parts of Cosmo that are fine, those things that either don't need fixing or that Cosmo doesn't want to be fixed.

The amazing thing about this relationship is that Cosmo ends up changing Alasdair about as much as his DOM changes him. I think that's kind of the point of the whole story, and it's a fabulous twist. I love stories where the hero ends up being the one who gets saved.

I also found it endearing and memorable that Cosmo was such an unconventional sub. He was a sub who wasn't all that submissive. Normally I'd characterize someone like that as being just a player. True subs, in my opinion, identify as submissive because it is part of their nature. It's their identity, similar to sexual orientation. With Cosmo, I do think this is true, but he had spunk and a flare of rebelliousness which set him apart. This is what made him perfect for Alasdair.

Oh, I had my moments with Alasdair. A few times I wanted to smack the bastard right upside the head. He was arrogant and judgmental and WAY too anal. But I also could see why Cosmo loved him so much. I think I'd have felt the same way.

I guess this story really just pushed all my buttons and tugged on my heartstrings a little. It's fantastic writing combined with a really cool story. Probably the best BDSM I've read since...well, since quite awhile.

This would have been 4 stars had I not read the free short. The freebie was packed full of chemistry and raunch and delicious teasing followed by delectable Daddy/boy smexin. This longer version felt like it had pretty much the same amount of all the great things in the short, but spread thin, so what I got was a watered down version.

Not saying it's a bad book because Myles, IMO, is incapable of that. Only that this was, well, mediocre, compared to the brilliance that was the short. I know, I know. I should stop harping about how awesome the freebie was, but I can't help it.

In the short, Cosmo was the perfect balance of rebellion and submission, and Alasdair was just bursting with testosterone and all things yummy a Daddy should have. In this, Cosmo's rebellious nature took a bit of a backseat and Alasdair's dangerous vibes got dialed down and polished. It was like reading the Lite versions of the characters in the freebie and that made everything feel so underwhelming. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but I've read the short so I know that this could have been more.

I was so excited to read this book as I loved the short (from the 2012 Love Is Always Write M/M Romance group event) that inspired it. Cosmos is a lovely character -- he's all cheeky brashness but has a bit of vulnerability and skitishness flowing underneath the bravado that endears him. He grew up on the rough side of town and seems to be drifting without an anchor. Until he meets wealthy businessman Alasdair Grant. An early attraction reveals common interest in certain kinks and Cosmos is drawn to the older self-assured dom. Cosmos really wants what Alasdair has to offer.

Unfortunately I was disappointed in that the early promise of the story didn't hold as Alasdair gradually softens his dom persona as he falls under Cosmos' cocky spell. He decides that he likes Cosmos just as he is. This is all fine and dandy but I had expected some heavier domination scenes and more of the daddy kink that was hinted at. I am a fan of Ms. Myles and she has become an auto buy for me but I have to admit this didn't have the sparkle that I've come to expect from her work.

"Hey, Cosmo," Freddie called. He turned back. "Don't you go leaning back against a lamppost dressed like that. Don't want anyone thinking I'm running a knocking shop."

This book set in the UK had me laughing out loud throughout. Such an easy flow to the writing, brilliant characterisation and so so naughty! 40 year old (George Cluny look-alike) Alasdair introduces irrepressible 24 year old musician Cosmo to the delights of submission.

'He didn't whimper. More like a swallowed moan. Oh all right then, it was a bloody whimper. A musical one, though. He reckoned he must have hit a C sharp.'

Goodish. Though Alasdair has to be the most annoying top ever. I know he's a Dom and therefore suppose to be bossy, but he was just so annoying with it. If someone tells me when to exercise, what to eat, when to drink and demands I follow a schedule, i'd tell them to get stuffed.

I also wasn't a big fan of the insta-love (never am tbh). Two and half weeks together and then declarations of love eternal, Okay?? *rolls eyes*

The one thing I did enjoy about the book was the humor. It has a lot of funny moments and Cosmo (sub) comes up with some great one-liners.

I'm sure others will enjoy this book more than me though, as i'm not the biggest fan of BDSM.

A wonderfully written book about a Harley riding, Tattooed Dom falling for a smart mouth, music loving sub. Both of these men grabbed at me and didn't let go. The growth of the relationship between them was a joy to read.

The cast of secondary characters rounded out the story beautifully, and the twist at the end was a pure shock to me.

This book was a real winner. I now have to go and look for other works by this author.

I must thank Monique for bringing this to my attention.

I totally meant to give this a higher rating than I initially did but of course SPA (stupid phone app) went and screwed it all up. This was way more than "meh ".

Alasair, a forty year old top/sadist interviews a 24 year old bottom/masochist, Cosmo, for a job with his cleaning company. Cosmo doesn't really want to be hired and has gone on this interview to keep his unemployment benefits coming in so that he could continue playing his music. His little trick to not be hired turns into lust for both Alasair and Cosmo.

Sweet read with a lot of spankings and sex thrown in for good measure. I liked the two characters so they were developed well. Otherwise, I would not have gotten involved with them. Sweet reads are not my norm but because of these two characters, I enjoyed it.

This was a really good read. Alasdair runs a successful cleaning services company and is interviewing candidates to fill more vacancies at his growing business. Cosmo is one of the people he interviews but the younger man has every intention of failing it so he can keep benefits and work on his music with the band he belongs to. When Cosmo lets him see marks on his wrist he tells him he is into BDSM he doesn't know what he has got himself into. Alasdair is taken with Cosmo and he knows that he needs some structure. This was a good read the sex scenes were hot I loved the dynamics between these two. I loved that neither MC was perfect Alasdair screwed up a few times and pushed Cosmo away. Cosmo also had a few issues with his pass and thinking that Alasdair was a snob because he was rich when really he grew up poor he was a self made man. I have read this author before and her take on BDSM is always good. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling.

I pre-ordered this book because I really have enjoyed every single book from Jo Myles that I have read. This book has BDSM and a touch of discipline and it was not heavy nor did it make you wince. Jo Myles tackles both of these in a fun way.

Cosmo comes into Alasdair's life during a job interview. Cosmo is young 20-something taking advantage of unemployment benefits in order to get his music career going. On the other hand you have Alasdair who has worked hard to get to where he is now. When he learns what Cosmo is doing he is less than amused. But he is also intrigued by Cosmo and his non-apologetic ways.

They begin the sweetest of relationships where Cosmo breathes new life and joy into Alasdair's everyday. And Alasdair brings order and focus into Cosmo's life to help him achieve his goals.

As I mentioned earlier this book has a touch of BDSM but it is done in a very light and fun way. I like that Alasdair recognizes that Cosmo is only willing to submit to him in "the bedroom" but not in their every day life. They do set up rules and limits which helps them achieve the level of trust both are looking in each other. Alasdair even gets to discipline Cosmo for something really stupid he did but don't expect to be cringing when you read that. I found that very refreshing as other disciplining scenes I have read in other books have tended to be cringe worthy at times.

I originally read the free short that originated this book. I actually think it is best to skip reading that one if you have plans to read the book. I felt more satisfied reading how Cosmo and Alasdair's relationship developed in the book while the short had left more curious than satisfied.

What a great balance of characters in this one. I love when an author can take what you think would be a stereotypical relationship and blur all the lines.

This is a story about Cosmo, a younger bratty sub and Alasdair, the older bossy Dom. But, this one really showed how human the characters were, they weren't just playing at roles or playing games. They really did need each other. They kept their depth even while in a scene and didn't follow all the "rules" you usually read about in Dom/sub stories. They made their own rules as they got to know each other and their play worked for them completely and made them more than just what their roles should have dictated.

I liked seeing Cosmo, even though he was younger, had a rough and sad upbringing, unemployed, uneducated, be the really honest and mature one in the relationship, especially at the beginning. Alasdair had some ghosts he was hanging on to and would have continued hanging on to, if Cosmo hadn't come along with all his attitude and honestly. Their dialogs were witty, snarky and sweet.

Not a heavy BDSM book by any means, it was there, but it was "personalized" for Alasdair and Cosmo. The structure wasn't so very rigid that you couldn't see how much they honestly cared for and needed one another.

Well...that was a fun, sexy romp - for the most part. That ending was entirely too abrupt, and I've discovered that I am not a fan of overly mouthy/bratty subs. I did like that Cosmo stood up for himself and drew the line (for the most part) at being controlled outside of the bedroom/scene, and that there was a lot of discussion of limits and expectations (almost too much, though, as it wasn't seamlessly integrated IMHO).

I'm not even sure what that one scene, with Roger at the party, was even about. It felt icky and unnecessary and I think there could have been other ways to comfortably establish Alistair's sexuality. I did like that they went there as themselves, didn't feel the need to put on airs or whatnot (even at the risk of losing business contacts, because that seemed to be about Alistair loosening up, not putting "work" first). And I kind of like the idea of shaking up some of those old foddy-doddies, making them feel awkward instead.

But the whole book felt like it wasn't terribly deep, and the characters less than introspective about their personality faults or issues & there wasn't a lot of examination of the why's & emotion of practicing BDSM.

Loved the dynamic between Cosmo and Alasdair. Sometimes in BDSM novels, it feels more like the sub wants discipline and pain only because the Dom wants to give it, not because they themselves truly want it. I loved how you never questioned whether the spankings and pain was something Cosmo wanted or not, you knew he enjoyed it. Cosmo was so fun, Alasdair a big teddy bear.
