I Dream of Danger

Rate this book
They are the Ghost Ops: a covert squad of super-elite soldiers. After their team was betrayed and massacred, the three surviving members went underground and built Haven, a community of misfits and geniuses. Now they're at a cross-roads, facing a new threat capable of destroying everything they hold dear.

When Nick Ross disappears from Elle Thomason's life, she is certain she'll never see the man she loves again - except in her dreams. Ten years later, as a respected researcher breaking new ground in psychic phenomena, she sends a desperate call for Nick's help. One by one, her colleagues have started disappearing.... and Elle knows she's next. An elite soldier, Nick never meant to hurt Elle, duty kept him away - and then she vanished. Now troubled by unusually vivid, disturbing dreams of Elle in danger, Nick will rescue the only woman he's ever wanted and bring her back with him to Haven.

Though powerful men are after Elle and her special abilities, Nick will die before leaving her side again.

Barely 3 stars, bumped up because I chuckled several times. This paranormal erotic-suspense borrows largely from the X-Men. I Dream of Danger is #2 in the Ghost Ops series. I preferred the prequel, Heart of Danger (my review) but yet still enjoyed this installment. It's spicy, fun, fantastical, and totally over-the-top.

Spoilers are hidden.

Series Overview: Set about 15 years in the future, in California, the series is filled with absurd improbabilities, high-tech gadgetry, and hot military heroes, oozing with passion and protectiveness. Pure nonsense, what these characters can do (in bed and on assignment) but so much fun! Mac (book 1), Nick (this book) and Jon (book 3) are special forces, Ghost Ops, wrongly accused of treason. Before the series began, some of the Ghost Ops escaped. They are hiding from the Feds off the grid on Mount Blue, in a high-tech “bat cave” called Haven.

Plot Development: ★ ★ 1/2 A mad scientist, a foreign superpower, a secret stronghold, treason, treachery, and the potential for apocalypse. Fun, but not original! The paranormal elements are similar to X-Men and the book begins much like Dangerous Lover. Despite the improbability and predictability, I enjoyed the book. I liked the whole sequence of events beginning when Elle realized she was in danger, to when Nick... It ends on a cliff, but yet completes the love story for Nick and Elle.

Sex and Relationship: ★ ★ ★ Sex started at 10%, before I felt enough relationship development, and continued nonstop through almost the first 25%. I had a hard time believing Nick . Elle did something extreme, yet I sympathized.

Characterization: ★ ★ ★ Nick made me laugh, with his "I'm gonna keep her" attitude. However, Rice's characters lack depth. Her heroines are always beautiful, determined, brilliant (Elle is a neurologist from Stanford) and good. Likewise, her heroes are strong, brave, passionate, and loyal. The villains are bad to the bone.

Character break: Elle (portrayed as "good") is thinking about her father, who just died after five years of dementia. She thinks: "What had been left behind was a shell of a person, human meat."

(Huh? Labeling a beloved father human meat??? Granted, I have not personally had to face this type of trial, but this label struck me as out of character, unloving).

Secondary characters got some good press. I liked the romance between Stella the chef and a certain luscious fella. ❤ I am curious to learn more about Lucius, Sophie, Les, Moira, and Roger. Happy to report that Catherine and Mac are still together (sweet fade-out love scene). Jon the surfing SEAL is intriguing.

Writing Style: ★ ★ Rice repeats what the characters are thinking. So much thinking. Skim, skip, skim. Redundant ruminations insult my intelligence and slow the pace. Also, Rice repeatedly explains events from the prequel. Skimming faster. Plus, sometimes she contradicts. On the up side, Rice wields a decent vocabulary (penumbra anyone?) and I found no typos.

The upcoming sequel will probably focus on Jon and Sophie. We will see what happens in San Francisco.

**********
Content: M-F sex (4 explicit scenes, plus fade-outs), swearing (lots of F-bombs), religious profanity (indiscriminate and excessive), some gory violence (almost farcical, like a B movie).

Lisa Marie Rice is one of my favorite erotic/romantic suspense authors, and I love this futuristic (but not overly SciFi) world she's created. I've been so looking forward to this second installment of her Ghost Ops series, and like the first book, Heart of Danger, it's action packed, fast paced and sexy, but I have to be honest, it also dragged in places.

Approximately the first 30% of the story is devoted to to the backstory, and while that might seem like a bit much, there's a lot of important information here. Things we need to know and wouldn't be able to get any other way without going the flashback route, which I'm not a big fan of.

I truly enjoyed reading about Nick and Elle's history. They're both great people, each in their own right... but put them together and they're amazing. It was emotional, poignant, romantic, sexy...but there was more introspection and lamenting than I like. I found myself skipping paragraphs at a time to get to the actual dialog and 'the good stuff' - the rebuilding of their relationship, and the new information surrounding Dr. Lee and Arka Pharmaceuticals. It's such an intriguing plot that I just wanted to skip all the 'filler' and get back to Nick, Elle, the Ghost Ops team, and the rest of the residents of Haven.

I hope Ms. Rice writes fast because I'm anxious to find out what's going to happen next!

Note: Something I failed to mention but feel that I should is that there is a cliffhanger with this story, but NOT concerning the HEA of our hero and heroine. It's strictly plot related.

My thanks to Avon Books for providing me with a copy of this story in exchange of an honest review.

Book Two, I DREAM OF DANGER. A continuation straight from the concluding last chapter of Book One.

More running and fighting. Things at the Corona Labs are going to hell in a hand-basket. The new virus they are developing has taken a turn for the very worst. Scientist are being hunted down. And Elle in a moment of panic calls out for the last person she loves but never wants to see again, Nick.

Nick has spent 10 years looking for Elle. You get to see how their relationship develops during the first half of the book. A few misunderstanding and some insecurities set the stage for the 10 year separation.

Elli has a special gift. Get ready for a romp through the second part of this book and Nick and Elli try to figure out themselves, the horrors at the Corona Labs, a rescue, and some self-discoveries.

More cool gadgets show up, hover cars, holograms, walls that turn into windows, body armor, and much more. Mac and Catherine show back up in book two in a big way making secondary characters a main part of the book. John continues with his snarky comments as well.

It’s eerie how this virus has a life of it’s own and in made by Corona Labs, it starts having some similarities to todays times. How amazing that these books were written in 2013.

“He stood up, rushed to the fanned-out glossy company brochures. His finger landed on one in the center. Three stylized gold crowns. Corona Labs—BRINGING THE FUTURE TODAY.

“This,” he said, finger tapping. Each time he touched the paper it seemed to get warmer.
This turned out to be the brochure for a new company.
Catherine picked it up, showed it to her husband. “I thought I knew more or less all the research labs in the country, but this is a new one.” Mac turned the glossy paper over in his big hands. There was a videolette loop embedded in the paper, all the rage nowadays. Some smiling woman in a lab coat endlessly raising a test tube in triumph, putting it down, raising it . . .
Nick was shaking with tension. The logo, the name Corona Laboratories meant nothing to him, but still they shone in his mind.
In a corner he could hear Jon restlessly tapping on the light keyboard—a projection of heat-sensitive light on the table. Jon’s fingers were a blur.
Mac handed the brochure to Nick. “This mean anything to you?”
Nick took the thick glossy paper and studied it carefully. The smiling woman, raising her hand with the test tube and putting it down in an endless loop was completely unfamiliar to him. He studied the text—
Corona Laboratories—Bringing the future today.Corona Laboratories is an offshoot of several highly successful research labs, dedicated exclusively to the study of neuroscience . . . “

And I repeat myself, The Narration was fab !!! read by Seraphine Valentine, I would gladly listen to her in future books. Her timing and inflection for each character was spot on.

Enjoy ~

Oh Lord this draagged endlessly for me . I was not connected and i was expecting so much more from this . The author has an annoying repetitiveness where she explains various events from the initial book in almost every different POV . It simply was not needed , I understand this happening at the start of the story but during right until the end was a little too much.

2/3 of the story was unnecessary, I did not get to the good parts of the whole story or understood what the plot line the book was talking about until the last 1/3 which left me confused . I did not feel the book needed that starting , we already knew they hadn't seen each other in 10 years but was it really necessary to go over those 10 years? it would be done better in flash back form instead it was told like it had some great meaning to the story when in fact it did not .

It simply took away from the plot and left me really confused. The plot wasn't tight enough and it did not hold the series together . Also so many different POVS were completely unnecessary , only a few writers can get away with those many different Povs for me ( namely Nalini Singh ) she does multiple POVS beautifully . Sadly i feel Ms Rice will simply need to fix editing and whole lots of mistakes inorder to make this series a success. I will try and read the next book and hopefully i will enjoy it .

3.5 stars

The story and characters were really good, but the reason I'm only rating it a 3.5 stars is because of the constant repetition. I found the author continued to 'remind' the me of past events which started to piss me off so I found myself skimming to get to the good parts.

I really liked Nick and Elle's characters, and I like where the author went with Dr. Lee's character.

I can't wait to read Jon's story!

I’m a bit on the fence about this book. On one hand, I found it a little slow to start. Sure, the main couple of this book Elle and Nick were sizzling hot when they were together. But – that blasted little thing called communication, or rather, the lack of communication got in the way of their happily ever after. During this first third of the book, I actually double checked the book to make sure that it was in fact a Ghost Ops book.

Fast forward to ten years later. Yes, the book does a ten year jump to the future. Elle has moved on to bigger and better things and is now a scientist for Arka Pharmaceuticals. Elle is doing some pretty nifty research on the brain but when her colleague Sophie calls to warn her of imminent danger, Elle blasts a telepathic message to Nick for help. Nick drops everything to find Elle.

This is where the story picks up for me. You see, Nick is a now a member of the Ghost Ops team. He and his fellow operatives live in an off the grid community inside a mountain. Finally, we get to see the inside of the mountain which kind of reminded me of those James Bond movies where the villains have mountains or volcanoes full of people working on some sort of military project. I loved the premise of Ghost Ops, how the team members are able to obtain highly classified items, hack into any network or satellite, and how they were completely self-sufficient. I loved the camaraderie among the residents and of course, the big alpha male characters.

A word about Nick and Elle – these two are not in a perfect relationship. Elle harbors a lot of anger and resentment towards Nick. Nick is extremely possessive of Elle, not allowing anyone to care for her. The alpha caveman impulses abound.

The villain of this book Dr. Charles Lee was bent on making a name for himself for China by creating an army of super soldiers. His methods fell outside of normal protocols and he did not hesitate to experiment on human subjects. Dr. Lee was cold, calculating, and ruthless. Unfortunately, his character kind of fizzled out for me.

I think that the last third of this book did it for me. This was the action packed Ghost Ops book that I had been waiting for. I’m not ready to give up on this series just yet and I am hoping that the next book – Jon and Sophie’s story – will pick up.

Thank you to Edelweiss and Avon for a review copy of this book.

Same complaints from book one. Although in this one it was just too much. It was repetitive and the villain's POV was boring and confusing. I just started skipping the villain's thoughts as well as the thoughts of the H/h.

I read Heart of Danger, the debut of the Ghost Ops series earlier this year and enjoyed the creative story angle Rice presents by delving into a not so distant future world of elite military warriors who are considered domestic terrorists by the U.S. government and are now fugitives. Although I Dream of Danger does provide exposition about the plot conflicts, it is best to start the series with the first book. I felt the background information provided in this second book was more to help readers remember important details about the plot rather than to introduce new readers to this series.

I expected the plot to focus on the Ghost Ops’ means of survival as they are being hunted and their quest to clear their name.

[image error] photo specialopssoldier_zps6301601e.jpg

While this aspect is part of the story, it becomes secondary to a more complex plot revolving around a sinister scientist’s obsession with creating a superhuman warrior. The paranormal aspects included add a level of intrigue to the story, and they provide the impetus for human scientific experimentation to continue and for the Ghost Ops team’s involvement to stop the unethical practices of a wealthy pharmaceutical company.

The novel begins ten years before the current action of the central plot. Ella Thomason is the protagonist who has a connection with one of the future Ghost Op team members, Nick Ross. She grew up with Nick until his sudden disappearance five years ago. When he unexpectedly shows up at the funeral of Ella’s father, she is both shocked and excited about his return.

During his absence, Ella has often had vivid dreams about Nick observing his life, and through her dreams, she can piece together information about what Nick’s life might be like. She has never been as close to anyone as she was to Nick, and his abrupt departure left her feeling more alone than ever. Her loneliness was only compounded when she had to sacrifice her life, her dreams, and her education to stay home and take care of her ailing father, whose dementia steadily worsened.

Rice uses multiple POVs to tell the story this story which was effective in providing more depth to their characters and adding more substance to the story. Getting Ella’s and Nick’s POVs deepened my understanding of the intense feelings they have for each other, even through their separation. Later in the story, Rice also adds the POV of the antagonist, Dr. Charles Lee, the scientist with a deranged agenda for creating a super warrior with special powers. His motivation for power and respect is the driving force behind his actions.

[image error] photo Supersoldier_zps1ff1aab1.png

During these early scenes it is evident that Ella’s feelings for Nick are stronger than just friendship, and Nick’s POV reveals his inner conflict over his restraint and desire for Ella. His attraction for her began before he left her, knowing she was too young for him at the time.

Nick and Ella finally give into their yearnings for one another as passion consumes them. Ella is elated that Nick is back in her life. When Nick leaves Ella again without telling her where he is going, she is devastated. His abandonment once again almost breaks her. By providing this glimpse of how their relationship has developed, Rice reinforces the agony both Ella and Nick experience once they are no longer together.

[image error] photo tumblr_mcq70vpFO11qd4k1lthismakesmewanttoweepanddie_zpsed6f2d7a.gif

However, I was relieved to see Ella take charge of her life by leaving her childhood home that has become a dark, depressing, stifling place that would only continue to stagnate her. Courageously, she takes her meager belongings and with limited resources sets out to forget Nick and begin living her life. Kudos to Ella for being proactive instead of playing the victim!

The author makes a smooth transition to describe Ella’s life ten years later. The vivid, life-like dreams Ella has had her entire life have led her to study neurobiology so that she can begin to identify, understand, and control her perception that she is having out-of-body experiences when she dreams. Her work leads her to become part of a research group focused on the study of those with psychic abilities. Unknowingly, she has become a part of Dr. Lee’s experimentation on human subjects in his efforts to create super soldiers with enhanced abilities and powers.

When members of the research group go missing, Ella is forced to flee. Her desperate situation leads her to psychically call out for Nick, who is now a member of the fugitive Ghost Ops team. Nick hears her call in his dream and begins a frantic search to find Ella. From this point on, the Ghost Ops get involved in the drama. Here we get to see a very different side of unflinching, stoic Nick whose biggest weakness is Ella. I could feel the meltdown he was beginning to experience in the painstaking search for the woman he loves. Rice does an excellent job of describing Nick’s tumultuous emotions and his growing impatience to rescue Ella. I even begin to get anxious, silently saying, “Hurry, hurry, hurry before it’s too late!” Needless to say, the suspense was intense.

Ella is an admirable character because of her diligence in overcoming the obstacles she has faced. She never complained or whined about the sacrifices she made to care for her father. She started over with nothing and eventually earned a Ph.D. Intuitively, she knows she has a gift that others do not, and I like that she becomes passionate about her research to find answers. Yet, when she becomes suspicious about the real agenda behind Lee’s research, I’m disappointed when she passively continues with research she knows is unethical.

[image error] photo pharmacistorevilscientist_zps0c70e21b.jpg

The story builds into another crisis when Ella eventually works with the Ghost Ops team to resolve another major conflict of the story: the need to rescue her fellow research subjects who have been kidnapped by Dr. Lee and whose lives are in immediate danger.

Furthermore, Ella has her own inner conflicts that she must deal with before she can move forward now that Nick has reappeared in her life. How will she deal with the pain from Nick’s abandonment and can she overcome her fears that he won’t leave her again?

Rice also weaves in an unexpected element to the story that creates another suspenseful plot thread which changed my expectations of what to expect next In his impatience to develop a super warrior, Dr. Lee has begun injecting himself with the experimental drug, and the consequences of his actions shocked and frightened me. This complication is just developing and will certainly carry over into the plot of the third book in the series. I am looking forward to discovering how this new problem will add to the plot.

Rice does a good job of describing and explaining the advanced technology used to forward the plot in this fictitious world, and she shows how the technology can improve our lives, but that it also has the potential to destroy our future.

I had three major issues with the plot. First of all, I appreciated that Rice included background information throughout the story to aid in the reader’s understanding, but at times this information was redundant and detracted from the pacing of the story. A second aspect was that I felt the rescue mission to capture Ella’s colleagues was rushed and lacked the full attention it deserved. I wish Rice would have lengthened the story so that the drama could have been heightened.

[image error] photo tumblr_inline_mfcqnb6LTB1ry4qim_zpsdaf6df90.gif

A final component that I didn’t like was in how closely this storyline replicated the one in Heart of Danger. A Ghost Op falls in love with a scientist with paranormal abilities, and she uses those powers to help in the mission. I also found the crisis and its outcome mimics the one in the first book. I hope that this doesn’t mean Rice will use a formulaic plot as she continues the series.

Overall, this is a series that I will continue to follow. The characterization and creative storyline with some surprising events kept my interest, and I look forward to the third book which features Jon, the third predominant team member and his search for a woman in danger.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

This is a great read. The storyline is interesting and it has a supernatural element that I didn't expect, which makes Ghost Ops different than all of her other series.

I didn't realize IDOD is the second book of this series until mid-way, when the character Catherine Young start to appear quite prominently in the story. The rapport that she has with Nick made me curious and I was surprise to find out this is a second book. But luckily enough, even without reading the first book, I could follow the storyline well. The premise of this series was explained well in this book as well, which is a clever thing because i have to start hunting the first book one of these days and might as well grab the third one while I'm at it.

Unbelievable is a good word to describe the Ghost Op series.

I Dream of Danger brings the whole crew back together to save a woman who is being hunted by Arka Pharmaceutical for her supernatural abilities. Elle can astral-project since she was a little girl. She knew there was something different about herself but never truly understood it until she studied it in college and joined Arka Pharmaceutical. Now, it’s the one thing that could save her life.

Nick, the man that she has loved since she was a little girl but left her. Only to come back and leave again. She can’t believe that he’s the first person that she thinks about when she finds herself being hunted. If only Nick hears her pleas for help.

Nick is a part of the Ghost Ops team. A team of ex-soldiers in hiding after being betrayed. He’s a hunted man. He’s a haunted man. He’s haunted by the one woman who he will always love but lost. He never thought to see her again, especially under these circumstances. But, when she calls out to him and tells him that she is in danger, he will move heaven and earth to get to her even if he doesn’t understand how she contacted him, where she is or who is after her.

With the help of Jon, Mac and Catherine, he is able to rescue her and bring her back to Mount Blue. But, in order to rescue her colleagues, he has to rely on her and her special abilities to again infiltrate Arka and bring them all back to Mount Blue.

I am totally in love with the men of the Ghost Ops. They are fun, strong, strong-willed and sexy all wrapped into one neat package. When they love, they love hard and strong. When they spring into action, they are swift, to the point and all Alpha-male. What’s not to love.

And, the story-line. Wow! Lisa Marie Rice brings us on another wild ride of love lost and found and what a man will do and go through to hold on to the one that got away. Dr. Lee is back with his maniacal thoughts of taking over the world. Flynn is back with his money and his want to rule the world. The rescued men of The Ghost Ops all start making an appearance and giving us hope that this is just not a trilogy. Ms. Rice keeps the story moving and very interesting. She makes Nick work to get Elle’s love back and she brings all the characters together to make a fun, intriguing story.

Ella Thomason has dreams of the day she will be reunited with Nick Ross, the young man that her father took in and then disappeared 5 years ago. She's pictured it a thousand times, but she never imagined that reunion would take place over her father's grave. Just when she thought all was lost, Nick returns. Duty calls, a lost note and misunderstandings keep Nick and Ella separated for 10 more years.

Elle has started a new life, a life where she can study the psychic ability that she exhibits, dream walking...but then her co-workers start to disappear. On the run for her life, Ella's only hope is Nick so she calls to him in her dream walking. Nick hears Ella's desperation and must pull out all the stops to find the woman that has eluded him for 10 years and bring her to safety.

Similar to the premise of Christine Feehan's Ghostwalker series, the Ghost Ops series has huge potential. The idea of highly trained, military, secret ops, seriously hot alphas finding their perfect mate in a strong women with advanced psychically abilities … definitely an awesome plot outline. The sexual encounters and attraction could be considered combustible. Unfortunately, this story was not for me. I found this plot extremely descriptive but repetitive and sporadic disrupting the flow and character connections. Although this book didn't suit me, it will definitely be a fit for a lot of erotic readers out there...the erotic encounters are completely smoldering.

Doormat thy name is Elle. I truly HATE doormat heroines. So this was not a good read for me. Plus it had that extra creep factor of her being able to astral project and has to watch him fuck loads of women. Just so many complaints, I can’t even believe I finished it.

11/09/12 - I have to wait until summer of 2013?? Why is Lisa Marie Rice torturing me with such long wait times?

On another note: Will there possibly be glowing vaginas in this one?

How does one go from a 4 to a 3? Two reasons.

one - the sequelitis was strong with this one. Seems like every time a character reappeared, we were reminded of their importance in this tale. I mean; I just read the first book. I didn't need reminding repeatedly how the captain and the other three near-invalids had been tortured, experimented on, and ultimately rescued. Yet the reminders were there, at least twice. The villain's purpose in life was told more than once as well.

two - for all that the h was smart, she was also a dingbat. I don't do dingbat. She did come to her senses after he had a come to jesus moment with her, but there's still that dingbatitis.

Ok, the story goes that at the tender age of 7(?), she found a boy in her back yard. Her father took the kid to the hospital, and later took him in. There's 6(?) years difference between them. About the time the boy turned 18, he noticed one day that she had boobs. Unfortunately, dad noticed that he noticed, and sent him away with a duffel bag full of clothes and $25 grand (I winced at that - a kid with that much cash on him? Ack!). He joined the army. In the meantime, dad began showing signs of altzheimers.

5 years later, he reads the father's obituary and goes back to pay his respects. By this time, he's a Ranger. Heroine has spent the past 5 years in limbo, playing nurse. The medical expenses have cleaned out the family coffers, the house is now mortgaged... He spends the night, and is woken early the next AM by a text that a mission is going down and he needs to be back at the base by midnight. He's not allowed to tell anyone other than a wife of this, but leaves the h a note saying he'll be back. He takes the time to order up a buttload of groceries, pays the funeral bill, and makes plans to transfer his savings, but he doesn't do this.

Heroine wakes up later, wanders around the house, and until the food is delivered, assumes he'll be back. At that point, she goes off to her room to mope, packs up everything, and vanishes.

10 years later... she's in trouble, mentally calls for help (more on that later), and after he rescues her, gives him shit for abandoning her.

Of course after she finally gets over herself, they go on a mission to see if they can rescue her friend.

In the meantime... the villain takes himself out by virtue of being too smart for his own good and injecting himself with a viral form of the performance enhancing serum he's been working on.

The issue with the h is that besides the obvious - if he's in the military, his ass belongs to Uncle Sam - she astral projects and has been spying on him for the 5 years after he "disappeared". She knows he's military and suspects special forces. She even asks him, which causes him a great deal of consternation. So his disappearing the next day... she could have figured out what happened by spying on him again. But no; she did the whole drama queen thing. Then, after he went into town, took out 4 men to rescue her, even though he's a wanted man and in hiding, she gives him shit. And after he tells her he went back, after he tells her about the mission, after he tells her he left a fricken illegal note, she doesn't want to deal with this right now. I wanted, at that moment, to reach through the pages and bitch slap her back into kindergarten. He'd been looking for her for 10 years. She'd changed her name.

I liked the first book a bit better then this one. The setup/background took a really long time to get through and the first 30% or more of the book was very slow. The two MC's don't come back together until after the 50% mark and I honestly have a hard time believing Nick couldn't find Elle for ten years just because she changed her name which was a bit extreme. I also thought that Nick and Elle's relationship depended a bit too much on sex. They are apart for a long time, get back together at Elle's dad's funeral and have sex. Split very shortly thereafter for ten years and yet Nick never gets over Elle (because they spent 2 days I think having sex)?

The other problem I have is that the characters don't have a lot of depth so they aren't that differentiated from characters from her first book. Her heroine is a very intelligent, beautiful and sweet woman while the male is a fierce, protective, brave, gorgeous hero. The villains are completely bad and the motivation isn't that strong. There is no gray - heroes and villains. Add to that Rice's tendency to repeat things from the first book and the redundant internal dialogue and it makes for some slow pacing that hindered my enjoyment somewhat.

I think I already own the 3rd book so I'm sure I'll finish it one day but after reading this I'm not in a big hurry and it will go on my back burner probably until I need it for a challenge.

So this begins like a romance novel, but sort of turns into I Am Legend and then leaves you dangling for the next book to find out what happens. I can’t really explain it very well, but it feels like the first half of the book is all prologue, and the second half of the book is the actual story which then ends.

The storyline itself is actually super interesting and I’m absolutely hooked on the series, but this book couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be a Romance, a Thriller, or a Romantic Suspense. Add to that, that it takes place partly now, partly 10 years from now, and it’s sort of a Futuristic Thriller with Romance.

The series title of Ghost Ops is really what got me. I’m sort of on a NAVY SEAL/Special Ops kick, and this seemed perfect. It begins with a wonderful heroine whose father has just passed. The past several years have been spent taking care of him as his mental and physical health declined, and this began around age 17, so the heroine Elle is basically dirt poor but trying to keep it together long enough to bury her father and take care of herself. At the funeral, Nick returns. He was a ward of her father’s for several years until one day he just disappeared. Gone. She lost her best friend that day. And when he came back he’d never once thought that this was how they’d reconnect.

This is all the first part of the book. It’s a super sweet and sexy reunion and then. . .he has to take a mission but can’t tell her. To Elle, Nick bailed once more. So she got up and walked away. Literally she just up and left her house.

Flash forward 10 years later. Elle unrealistically lands on her feet, and it turns out all the sexy dreams she’s had of Nick, all the weirdly realistic dreams she’s had her whole life (which aren’t made out to be enough of a plot point to sustain the powers she has, btw), all of these dreams were her superpower. Elle can astral project and she’s working in a lab on developing the technique when she finds out that she’s in danger. Big time.

She runs.

And when she’s at rock bottom, holed up in a seedy no-tell motel, she psychically cries out for Nick. Who hears her. And goes to her. Of course.

This is where the crazy romantic suspense part comes into play. It sort of works, sort of doesn’t. I feel like the author wrote 2 books and fused them together. But the ending is left so wide open that nothing is resolved except for the HEA of the hero and heroine.

Nick saves Elle, of course, and takes her to his bunker. The seat of the Ghost Ops is this fantastical bunker that has everything, and they have millions upon endless millions of dollars, of course, and they have the latest in technology (which being 10 yrs from now, is pretty cool stuff). They sort of save Elle’s friend, and then some I Am Legend stuff happens and then it ends.

My final verdict is that I liked it enough to want to read on, and I did get caught up in the action. But I hope that the next book is more clear cut on what it wants to be, because the sweet romance to romantic suspense to thriller transitions were really rough. A book can be all of those things, but it can be done all as one, rather than feeling like I read 3 books smooshed together.

I Dream of Danger is book 2 in the Ghost Ops series by Lisa Marie Rice. I could hardly wait to get this book after reading book 1, Heart of Danger. I am surely glad I didn’t wait, because this book is equally as good.

Like Kenyon’s Dark Hunter as well as Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood and others, this fun series allows readers to relate to the anchor protagonists as well as the antagonists like an ongoing TV soap/weekly series.

There is the Arka Pharmaceutical’s subsidiary, Corona Laboratories, and the evil Dr Lee/Li in addition to Orion with its pompous General Flynn. The psychic individuals and elite Ghost-Op soldiers and Catherine continue to struggle in resolving empathic communication.

Elle Thomason, impoverished following the long Alzheimer’s illness and death of her father, summoned Nick Ross to the funeral. Nick had been a run-away youth and raised by her dad. Nick had been in the military for 5 years. His steamy stay with her was for only 4 days before he was commanded to return to his unit.

After a 10 year hiatus, Elle is employed at Corona Laboratories as a scientist, and was warned of danger by a colleague and escaped to summon Nick with physic powers. With the help of Catherine at Haven, Nick is able to resolve Elle’s location from her cryptic summons, and rescues her to find deep resentment of his departing from her without notice after a scorching bed scene years ago.

”Some pity for the non-geeks here!!” I suspect that this comment aimed at the warriors, would also accommodate readers not familiar with medical and physiology terms and could be boring. Not me, says I.

Ghost-ops return to the Corona Laboratories to rescue Elle’s co-workers that have been captured, including Sophie, who I am anxious to read more about in the final book of this great series. Jon will be there too and crafty as ever I'd bet. I would definitely like to live in Haven.

This is a well written and convoluted adult book for those liking sci-fi, magical powers, paranormal and steamy sex

Everything starts at a funeral. After years of caring for her father with Alzheimer's, the disease finally won the battle and Elle is burying him. Among those present a good surprise: Nick Ross. She had not seen him for at least five years and there he was, handsome and strong, supporting her.
Elle was born into a good family. Despite having lost her mother very early, his father, Judge Thomason, was a man well liked and possessions. She always had everything she wanted. At age seven she found a wounded boy, skinny, starving, hiding in their backyard. Her father took him as a child and there he lived until age 18. This was Nick.

Nick appeared in the house of Judge Thomason fleeing another foster home that should care for him. To be accepted in this new family, as if he were a member, with his own room, new clothes, school and even his own laptop, he could not believe the good luck. Also there was Elle to bright his day.
But Elle grew up. And a pretty child, became a beautiful girl, with a promise to be a beautiful woman. And when the judge noticed the look of lust in Nick, the best thing was to go away forever.

Ten years have passed and Elle becomes a neuroscientist.
Working for Arka Pharmaceuticals , she was part of a research about telekinetic powers. And her specific area was about Astral Projection.

Now Elle is in danger and for some reason, needing help, she thought of a single person. The person that she tried not to think for 10 long years. The man who abandoned her when she most needed. But despite all that, it was on Nick Ross whom she thought. Does her ability to astral projection could help to contact him? And would Nick want to help her?

A book to hold your attention. You won't drop it until read everything.

5 STARS!!!!

Totally forgot about this series! I Dream of Danger came out in 2013 and to be honest I was ok reading it much later because it was not amazing at all.

...

I totally forgot about Lisa Marie Rice's Ghost Ops series. I Dream of Danger is the second book and came out in 2013 and it was just as weird and strange as the first book Heart of Danger. I think this series is meant to be futuristic but if it is it's not written very well in a futuristic sense. Other than that Elle has a special ability being able to dream travel and follow the person she connects with. However, there's a long back story between Elle and Nick which took up a big chunk of the book and then when they finally re-connect Nick goes a bit OTT in his attitude and behaviour towards Elle, which I didn't like or enjoy. I felt that I Dream Danger was too dragged out and then the ending was squished together with a tease for the next book which I hope is the last book because the Ghost Ops series is not at all what I expected and am used too from this author.

I really liked how this one started, liked the connection between Elle and Nick, but hated how things changed. The fast forward in time seemed abrupt. I know it needed to be done to be set in the world of Haven, but everything seemed so different and didn't mesh well with the start.

I find it odd that these super soldiers end up with these super smart/brainy type women, not sure that I can buy into that, especially as it seems like it was foreshadowed who John would end up with.

Once again with this book, Haven was the best part of the book. I love the community, love that there is this high tech sanctuary for those that need it. I almost wish that the story was set entirely there.

Really torn about how to rate this. The set up for the story was reallllly slow! It was nearly halfway through the book before I felt like the main story was really beginning. Once there was a connection between the main characters again, I enjoyed the story more. I thought the ending was quite rushed and really wanted more at the end for the hero and heroine. I am intrigued by this world, but this book was a little disappointing. I liked Nick and Elle and really wanted more for them. So overall, perhaps 3 1/2 stars, but the part that I enjoyed was a solid 4.

2.5 🌟 okay so I found the first book in the series to mediocre, awkward and nothing to write home about. Yet there was just enough there that made me want to continue the series. The second book was just as mediocre as the first hahaha and for some reason I am going to go start the third. This series is ridiculous but I'm not giving up on it lol

Review Copy from the Publisher

Everybody on our forum Les Romantiques know that I love Lisa Marie Rice since I read Woman on the run in 2010. Now, I follow all her news and I read all her books, even in English.
I dream of danger is the second volume of her new trilogy called Ghost Ops. The first one, Heart of danger, was published last year and the last volume will be published next year. It seems a long way for me!

In any case, I loved this novel. As soon as I started it, I couldn’t stop reading. I found it entirely different from the first one, more stirring that what I usually read by the author.

The heroes of the series, Tom « Mac » McEnroe, Nick Ross and Jon Ryan, were members of a secret special unit only known by two persons. They were betrayed and the team was massacred. On the way to the martial court, the three men escaped and knowing that they couldn’t get back to their former lives, they hid underground where they built a community with misfits, geniuses and people on the run. They called it Haven.

Lisa introduces new elements in this series: psychical powers possessed by some people and the heroines, biological research with ADN traffics and a lot of futuristic and high technological materials including weapons, computers…
I found that the setting was well explained and exploited. As usual, we feel that Lisa worked deeply on the subject before placing her characters.

I prefer reassure readers who didn’t read the first volume: you can read I dream of danger without problem.
We meet up with the same characters, the good guys as well as the bad ones. The end of Heart of Danger was frustrating for me and I was not entirely satisfied with the end of this one as well because the big bad guy is still on the run. But meanwhile, Lisa offers a good ending to the readers, so we content ourselves with it. Nevertheless, I can’t wait for Jon’s story with … I won’t talk about his heroine even if I already know who she is. You will find more by reading the book.

I said that the book was very, very stirring and it’s because of the plot. The story takes place long before Nick became a Ghost Ops. We learn who the woman with whom he is in love is. She was just mentioned in Heart of Danger without being named. And the relationship between Nick and Elle is the reason why this book is so stirring. Because they have been in love for a long time but they couldn’t talk about their feelings because of exterior elements that are going to separate them for ten years. Readers witness Nick and Elle’s despair and the feelings are so skillfully worked in the novel (Thanks Lisa) that we feel like we have to sympathize with them. And we only want one thing, that they find each other again and be happy forever.

I loved that the plot in this book was following the previous one. Indeed, in Heart of Danger, our heroes find out that yes, psychical abilities exist. In I Dream of Danger, there is no skepticism any more. And when Elle talks about what she can do, the three men believe her immediately and readers can move on to something else.
In the same way, Lisa explains (again) why Haven exists and who lives there but she never showers those who have already read the first volume with too much details.
What’s more, she talks about the three men AND some secondary characters. But, you will have to read the book to know what I mean.
There is also some humor and I sometimes laughed out loud. I’m especially thinking about the first encounter between Elle and Catherine Young (the heroine in Heart of Danger). A memorable moment.

I loved the characters, as usual. Nick is an alpha male with all the qualities which go with it and Elle is well educated, nice and devoted and she has psychical abilities. Their relationship is explosive and we believe in their future once we close the book. The hot scenes are very well described.

You understand now that this romance is magnificent and everybody must read it: we cry, we laugh and we are afraid for the characters, that proves that Lisa Marie Rice knows how to animate her stories. I wish that J’ai Lu (Lisa’s French publisher) has already bought the rights, because it would be a shame! I had a very good time and I think that the last volume will be superb.

“Wow!!” That’s the word that came to my mind after I finished this book. But it´s more like a feeling of awe. Now I can breathe again.

“I dream of danger” is the upcoming book of Lisa Marie Rice and it’s the second in the “The Ghosts Ops” series. The book is to be released next July 2nd.

I have never read a book from Lisa Marie Rice, so why start now with a second book of a series that I never knew about. That’s simple I love to read and a friend of mine who loves Rice’s books is set to bring them to Brazil so we need reviews in Portuguese and since the book is in English I volunteer to read it. And last but not least I am always up for new books and authors (new for me as far as I can see).

Back to the book, I couldn’t read “I Dream of Danger” without reading the first book “Heart of Danger” before. Remember I didn’t know Rice’s work before and also because I am crazy about reading books in order of release.

So there I was reading the first book of the Ghost Ops and I have to tell the truth I am not into futuristic and paranormal books and also don’t really like when they write about military guys (nothing against it just not my thing). But the thing is the book end up being a great surprise because it had everything I avoid in a book and still I found myself unable to put it aside. There is a lot of action, mystery and steamy romance. But what really got my attention were the characters. Even though the book is fast paced and because there is many things happening at the same time you stay with a feeling you didn´t get enough of them, you just know they are so much more them they already show in the book. You just have to keep reading to learn more about them…when you least expect you just want more of everything Rice’s can give with the stories.

So here I start with “I Dream of Danger”. The truth (again) I was not expecting much. Why’s that?? There is so many things going on at the same time, during a pretty fast plot, you just don’t believe the book will satisfy… But, I was sooo wrong... The book was WAY WAY better than I was hoping for.
It starts telling us about Nick’s story. Nick Ross is one of the Ghost Ops (we met him in the first book, and I am not talking about that one anymore, if you haven’t read it yet, stopping reading this review a go read “Heart of Danger” ASAP) and we get to learn how he end up in the military and later with the Ghost Ops, and what happened in his life 10 years before. We also met Elle Thomason (who latter becomes Dr. Elle Connolly) love affair and important part of Nick’s past. Parallel to Nick and Elle’s story, the main plot continues with Dr. Lee (the main villain) getting crazier each chapter, and the growing community at Heaven. We got see a bit more of the other characters such as Stella and Capitan Ward (he is getting better each day). And let me tell you just reading their short moment pay of the whole book. (Call me a romantic if you may.)

I am also in love with John (another Ghost Ops)!!! And curious about the mysterious Sophie.
Again the essence of the characters is what makes me like so much the books and became (for sure) a fan of Lisa Marie Rice. The way I understand it Rice´s book is not just about the action and the whole futuristic scenarios (which is very impressive) and the paranormal stuff, it is a lot about the people as well, Rice created very complex characters.
Talking about action, what was that???? Sometimes I couldn’t even breathe or blink afraid I’d miss something. And Rice doesn’t stop there she keeps changing the “wheels” of the story. When you are sure this is going one way Lisa Marie just throws you in the air... and it’s is effing fantastic!!!!!

So, yeah, WOW!! Can’t wait for the third one (wouldn’t be surprised if lots more came after).
Don’t let me forget the best “dinner” I ever read about in the first part of the book  Curious?? Go get yours!!

Thank you Vânia (http://aborboletaquele.blogspot.com.br) , for inviting me to read this book, Edelweiss and Avon Book for making it available for us, and the guys from http://asenvenenadaspelamaca.blogspot... , for posting this review and Lisa Marie Rice for this great book.

When Nick Ross disappears from Elle Thomason's life, she is certain she'll never see the man she loves again—except in her dreams. Ten years later, as a respected researcher breaking new ground in psychic phenomena, she sends a desperate call for Nick's help. One by one, her colleagues have started disappearing . . . and Elle knows she's next. An elite soldier, Nick never meant to hurt Elle, duty kept him away—and then she vanished. Now troubled by unusually vivid, disturbing dreams of Elle in danger, Nick will rescue the only woman he's ever wanted and bring her back with him to Haven.

Though powerful men are after Elle and her special abilities, Nick will die before leaving her side again.

I so enjoy LMR's writing...there's nothing she's ever written I just didn't LIKE.

That said, this wasn't one of my favorites. I felt like the 1st third of the book took me forever to get through ~ one of the things I like BEST about LMR is her uber possesive heroes. I found it hard to believe that Nick would leave Elle for 10 years, even to build his own life. I felt like the connection between just wasn't as strong as I wanted it to be. There was so much time spent on when they were younger, then I felt like we zoomed through them actually finally coming face to face again, and hooking up.

But again, I say these things comparing LMR to LMR, if you get me.

It's a really good book, and I'm totally into the Ghost Ops. Loving that they've built their own world inside a mountain! This is book 2 in this series, and I wouldn't suggest reading this as a stand alone.

This book doesn't spend a lot of time giving the back story. I don't think you'd be totally lost, but you would know there are things you're missing.

All in all? A good read, great writing!!

I absolutely love Lisa Marie Rice and find that she has some of the most addictive romantic suspense novels out there. I reread one of her older titles at least once a year because I just love the connection that she has between her characters and how that plays out for the reader. I was very excited going in to I Dream of Danger and was not disappointed. This is book two in the Ghost Ops series and even though I didn’t read book one I felt the storyline was very easy to catch up on. The only thing that left me confused, it starts as a contemporary romance but then jumps 10 years and there’s a change in technology that was possibly introduced a little more in book one, but threw me off some in this book. Things like flying cars. When you’re not expecting them, it can throw you off just a little bit. Outside of that, the overarching storyline I felt was very well recapped so that I was able to pick up where book one left off. Elle has known Nick for years, beginning when he moved in with her family when he was still young. When he left abruptly Elle was heartbroken and with not a word from him in years, she did not expect him to show up at her father’s gravesite. They tentatively reform a bond but it’s quickly broken in a way that was gut wrenching and had me sobbing but I can’t really share because it would be a bit of a spoiler. Flash forward 10 years and Elle is in trouble. Even though Nick is the last person she wants to turn to he’s the only one that can help her now. Nick’s hasn’t forgotten Elle and has been heartbroken that he hasn’t been with her over the years. Is this his chance to prove to Elle that they were meant to be? With danger around every corner Elle and Nick are fighting to save her from danger and the possibility of a HEA. Very good read that has some great secondary characters. I’m excited about what comes next in the series!

I'm not sure what to think of this book or this series. Is this a supernatural thriller? A Futuristic Thriller? A Zombie Apocalypse Romance? This book was all over the place and was a very disjointed read. It starts out promising with the hero and heroine who love one another so deeply and are each other's soul mates, are reunited in their early 20's, reconnect after the death of the heroine's father by having all consuming sex (heroine is a virgin, although the hero at 23 years old has is very experienced). They're separated for 10 years (which is plausible but the way the heroine lands on her feet is laughable) and then it because this futuristic or supernatural thriller because the heroine has super powers.

Heroine must be saved by big bad ugly power crazy men (this is where it gets confusing) and throw mind speak she calls out to hero to save her. He jumps to her rescue and they reconnect by having more awesome sex, their bodies and minds merge and all that wonderful jazz. Heroine must save her other friend with special powers in San Francisco and along the way there is some virus that makes people like the zombies in 28 Days Later. It ends on a cliffhanger of sorts with San Francisco falling to the zombies.

There were too many back and forth POVS that aren't needed and the constant jumping into the villains was dull. The internal lusting and monologue of the heroine and hero was also annoying and although the hero had some merit, the heroine is a rehash of every Lisa's Mary Sue heroine she's written before.

Hard core fans of LMR will love this one. I found it too silly and unbelievable.

I was hoping to like this book more than the first one, but instead I found that I didn't enjoy it nearly as much. It was just OK for me. The one thing that I did like about the book was that Nick and Elle's story isn't told through flashbacks. Instead, it starts 10 years in the past. We get to see how they met and how they ended up getting torn apart from each other. I liked the linear aspect of the story instead of getting their back story in pieces.

Nick and Elle were OK. I thought that they got together a little too quickly for me once Nick finds her again. Elle didn't have much will power. I'm not sure I bought Nick not being able to find her for the amount of time it took him to. With all of their technology, it should have been a piece of cake. I was also a bit disappointed that author set up the same "loss/resurrection" scenario with this couple in the end. She already did it with Mac and Catherine in the first one.

The story was a bit repetitive and went over the same material about Haven and its residents one too many times. It ended up making the book longer than it needed to be. I'm hoping that the author will tighten things up more in the next book and not go over the same ground again. The ending was a bit of a cliffhanger and I do look forward to Jon's story next in Breaking Danger, which comes out later this year.
