Pretty good, with a number of solid, constructive ideas. It seems appropriate for everyone in every context. Everyone should have a copy before they consider teaching abroad.
My only gripe is that it, like most teacher training books, uses ideal classroom students who want to be there and take part in activities eagerly and attentively. Sure, there's mention of excitable kids who might want to test patience; that's what teenagers do for fun. But most techniques use imaginary students who just don't present serious issues in class.
There are classroom management issues that crop up once in a while that don't get covered.
This book is full of useful ideas covering a very wide range of classroom management issues. Every school should have a copy, not just language schools. It's great for new teachers and more experienced ones, helping you to deal with problems you may have, or giving you new ideas you may not have thought of before. Every technique is broken down into clear steps, and they are often accompanied by diagrams or images to help you understand them. Of course, I don't think every idea would work in my classroom, but then, I'd be disappointed if I found a book where that was the case! Get yourself a copy :)
I read this book cover to cover and found it full of invaluable techniques and activities. Even though this is perhaps more aimed at people just starting out, I found that even as a relatively "experienced" teacher (doing Delta) I learnt some new things and revised other ideas I may have forgotten about since initial training. I've enjoyed reading all of Scrivener's books since starting out with 'Learning Teaching' while doing CELTA. This is an up-to-date look at the classroom with fresh takes on old problems, and I definitely recommend it to any teachers, wherever they are in their career, and trainers too.
Brilliant. Absolutely loved it. Will forever come back to it again and again. Very very useful. Essential for teachers of ESL. Full of clever tips, tricks and techniques for better delivery of language classes. It provides useful strategies and provides an explanation of the purpose behind it. Whoever teaches in a classroom (especially ESL) HAS TO check out this great reference.
