Thinking about code often comes down to staring and swearing, but Jump Start Responsive Web Design makes sense from the start. SitePoint walks readers through some good design strategies, including how to work with Retina displays. It's worth reading front to back. Html5 and Css3 Responsive Web Design Cookbook is tactical, as the title suggests, but provides more description than the typical code sampler.
