A fabulous read. I don't normally read this genre but I am so glad I did. Sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone is worth it. The author created great characters and I can't wait to keep following this story in the next part. Definitely recommend.

What an amazing introduction to Harper’s writing. I couldn’t put this book down! Such diverse and well developed characters and a unique storyline that pulls you into a magical world. Loved this book!
Of Light and Nightmares is an entertaining book that I finished in a day. To read almost 500 pages says a lot about the immersion of this book. It just took me away on a journey. I had a bumpy ride but I was hooked and could not stop reading.
Of Light and Nightmares is the story of Emmeline. She has been prone to seizures since her late teens and lives a reclusive life in a mansion in Toronto, managing her family’s philanthropic work. Her brother, Matthew, is a doctor who accompanies her to many of the events. On one such event, she has what feels like a seizure but doesn’t manifest as one. The two women who trigger this in her are intrigued by her. Emmeline and Matthew find themselves plunged into the world of these fantastic creatures that look like humans sometimes.
They call themselves the nainthe. Their job is to protect the world from the raizour, creatures who enter the world through a gateway and cause violence. Historically, they have worked closely with humans who have the unique ability to find other humans who have the potential to become nainthe. They call such humans ‘elystier’. No elystier has existed in the last two decades and the discovery of Emmeline is a saving grace to the nainthe as without her, they cannot continue to exist. I enjoyed this unique set of creatures and mythology.
The story features a diverse cast of characters. Everyone has their own distinct personalities and motivations. I loved the cultural references in Emmeline and Matthew's education, how they refer to elders, the fear of the aunties who are always playing matchmaker and are big gossips. Since Emmeline and Matthew are rich, there is a person for everything and new phones, cars, lawyers and private investigators appear with the zap of fingers. This helped the pace of the plot as things would get taken care of without any issues and also added a lightness to the whole story because the stress was taken away from having to deal with these things personally. Though Emmeline is in her thirties, with her living at home, telling white lies to her caretakers and someone else cleaning her messes makes this story of the coming-of-age trope.
Of Light and Nightmares is a page-turner with a fast-paced plot that kept me hooked from start to finish. It is told in third person from Emmeline’s point of view with sporadic insight into her thoughts. A lot of the book is dialogue which is what helped me fly through it though it also felt like things were being explained to me through conversations rather than described. The dialogue changes into humorous banter as the story progresses and the various characters get to know each other.
While the book has its strengths, there is also room for growth and development in future installments. I found it difficult to build an emotional connection with any of the characters. This may be because of the abundance of dialogue or the third person narrative style. Occasionally I had access to Emmeline’s private thoughts. In the later half of the book, the thoughts increased and there seemed to be a unique telepathic connection between Emmeline and Matthew.
Though there were fights between the nainthe and raizour and people got hurt, the tone of the book felt light to me. Actions didn’t have consequences rooted in reality, particularly because Emmeline and Matthew’s rich status afforded them the luxury to not deal with the messes personally.
I am glad I stuck to the end of the book because the last 100 pages were stellar. I was shocked by the increase in violence. The last couple chapters gave a proper glimpse of the dark fantasy that this story truly is.
I hadn’t expected Of Light and Nightmares to be such a quick read for me! I flew through it in a day and I liked the story. I am interested to see how the follow up volume fleshes out the world and hope that I start connecting with individual characters, not just the relationships and the non-stop plot.
Emmeline is an heiress not only to her parents' wealth but also to their philanthropic endeavors. Against her expectations, Emmeline finds herself thrust into a mesmerizing world, where the boundaries between reality and the realm of magic and monsters blur. Unbeknownst to her, she becomes the coveted target of mysterious creatures driven by an inscrutable purpose. It is through a startling revelation that Emmeline discovers her possession of a unique ability, granting her the rare sight to perceive non-human entities and assume the crucial role of safeguarding humanity. As the story progresses, Emmeline embarks on a transformative journey, honing her newfound powers with the guidance of the guardians. However, this personal growth comes at a price, as the malevolent creatures, akin to demonic forces, grow increasingly agitated and unleash havoc upon the world. A race against time ensues, challenging Emmeline's resolve and raising the question of whether she can master her abilities to salvage the familiar world she holds dear. Yet, the ultimate query remains: What sacrifices must she make along the way?
Now, let us pause for a moment to acknowledge the sheer brilliance of the book cover. Its thoughtful design strikes a harmonious balance between simplicity and profundity, offering a compelling visual representation of the essence permeating throughout the pages. Embracing the essence of an exhilarating coming-of-age tale, this remarkable novel encapsulates the essence of the young adult genre. Emmeline's journey resonates deeply with readers, as her character embodies relatable qualities that echo within us all. One cannot help but imagine oneself in her shoes, yearning for her extraordinary abilities while simultaneously fearing the burdens they bear. Harper's narrative deftly explores themes of courage, responsibility, commitment, and the pursuit of greatness through the simple act of embracing one's true self. Within the pages of this enchanting book, the author skillfully crafts a fantasy warrior tale that serves as an inspiring model for young girls to admire and aspire towards. The endearing cast of characters further amplifies this effect, with Erik standing out as a particularly sympathetic figure. His arduous tasks present an emotional quandary, highlighting the delicate balance between duty and moral righteousness. With this being only the first installment in the series, the promise of further thrilling adventures beckons, leaving readers eager to witness the continued evolution of these captivating personas.
Of Light and Nightmares: The Ashes of Magic Trilogy unveils a mesmerizing literary journey as the first volume in this promising series by Alex Harper. Our protagonist, Emmeline, emerges as a commendable figure—an intelligent young woman devoted to the pursuit of philanthropy, dutifully carrying on her parents' legacy. However, the trajectory of her life takes an unexpected turn when she becomes entangled in a web of gripping events and enigmatic mysteries, evoking both trepidation and intrigue. Gradually, Emmeline unravels her true nature and discovers her latent abilities, a revelation that compels her to shoulder the responsibility of protecting and ultimately saving our world. This novel seamlessly intertwines elements of fantasy, suspense, and mystery, captivating readers with its vivid descriptions that propel them from one chapter to the next, unrelenting in its grip. From the outset, I harbored an inkling that this book would prove an engaging read, given its alignment with my preferred genre. The author adeptly fleshes out the action while artfully crafting multifaceted characters, rendering their behaviors and personalities truly captivating. My discovery of this series—encompassing a contemporary urban backdrop, meticulously constructed characters, and a captivating plot infused with fantastical and paranormal elements—filled me with immense satisfaction. Harper's original and imaginative writing style and storytelling prowess left an indelible impression. The narrative deftly oscillates between diverse characters and their intricate predicaments, engendering a sense of intrigue and entertainment for the reader. The plot itself is both compelling and intricately woven, reflecting the author's literary acumen. It is this unique narrative style that captivates the reader, propelling them through page after page in eager anticipation of the thrilling and unforeseen denouement. As I eagerly await future installments in this trilogy, I find myself consumed by anticipation, yearning to immerse myself in Harper's enchanting world once more. I recommend this captivating read, eager to witness the literary magic that lies ahead.
Emmeline spends the majority of her time maintaining her family’s foundation and supporting multiple non-profits. At a fundraising gala she runs into two mysterious women who agitate her seizure condition. After the gala the women approach Emmeline, claiming she’s the person they have been searching for over decades. They claim they are nainthe, supernatural defenders of the world from demon-like creatures called raizours, and Emmeline is a seeker, someone who is able to sense people who will turn into nainthe. Despite her skepticism, Emmeline attempts to help the nainthe while still maintaining her independence.
Of Light and Nightmares is a difficult book to get into, and I suspect it is due to the lack of goals for the main character. Emmeline is a fairly passive character. She claims to not be a doormat, but she often goes along with whatever is asked of her, only standing up to herself in certain situations. For example, the nainthe are extremely aggressive, condescending, and rude to Emmeline throughout their interactions. Despite not getting a clear explanation why a seeker is so important to them or why she should care about anything the nainthe are doing, Emmeline continues to spend time with them and attempt to help them. She spends time at galas and running her family’s foundation, but she doesn’t appear to enjoy it or even like doing it. She dates the mayor even though she clearly doesn’t like him or enjoy his company. What exactly does Emmeline want out of life?
Even the nainthe seem to hate life. They all complain about their sacrifices and how no one would choose to be a nainthe. If that’s the case, shouldn’t they be happy to not have a seeker to make more nainthe? Yes, the raizours evidently are murderous, but it’s also clear that the nainthe have never attempted to make peace with the raizours or find out what they want. It’s hard to enjoy a book where all the “good guys” clearly are miserable. Overall a disappointing read.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Of Light and Nightmares: The Ashes of Magic Trilogy, Volume I (An Urban Fantasy Series) by Alex Harper, is an intense urban fantasy that grips you from the beginning. When Emmeline faces an uncertain future and experiences frightening, unexpected visions, she soon learns about what lies ahead, impacting her life personally and professionally. She must navigate her life with new expectations and brace herself for challenges. Following the tragic loss of her parents, Emmeline must forge a new life and journey, which proves to be challenging and emotional.
I found this book a refreshing departure from other urban fantasies, as it opens with solid character development, capturing the vivid emotional theme of the story, which helps the reader empathize and bond with them. Character strength is essential in a trilogy, mainly as the story develops. I quickly bonded with the plight of Emmeline and her newfound destiny, which is boldly conveyed with amazing narration and imagery throughout the book. This story sets the stage for an exciting trilogy!
Harper is a master of creating vivid scenes that evoke emotions and feelings connected with the characters and their environment. It’s a story that will reel you in and keep the pages turning from start to finish. If you’re new to urban fantasy, this trilogy begins with a strong impression and delivers a stellar tale, which makes it an excellent introduction to new and long-term fans.
Of Light and Nightmares: The Ashes of Magic Trilogy, Volume I (An Urban Fantasy Series) by Alex Harper, is an exceptional read and a wonderful start to a promising series. There’s an impressive balance of fantasy, romance, and action, which is ideal for a wide audience. I look forward to following this story and seeing more work from the author. It’s a well-crafted tale that creates an intriguing potential for a great trilogy.
This book was fairly slow paced for most of it but HOLY MOLY did it just ramp up in the last 70 pages! Also maybe the first time I have ever been jump-scared by a non-horror book. Things I loved about this book: minority representation done well (racial minorities, accessibility in fantasy races rep, bisexual rep, neurodivergence), the slow-burn (mostly) romance that I was immediately invested in, and seeing how a grown-ass woman with a life and responsibilities has to adapt to many of the common 'chosen one/fantasy destiny' shenanigans that we usually see being dealt with by teens or 20 somethings. Where I think this book could improve is some of the conversation/banter between characters. There wasn't a lot of flow and it sometimes felt very forced and unnatural. Not to mention I have many annotations where I think some of the dialogue choices are just so unrealistic for what most of the time is a very rational and grounded FMC. In the front half of this book I was lukewarm but in the back half this book really grabbed me and now I am delaying the book I was going to read next to IMMEDIATELY start the next book in this trilogy. Do I need answers to the main fantasy plot and to see where this goes? Yes. But am I REALLY just waiting for the climax (pun intended) of our romance sublot because the author is making me work for it WHICH I LOVE? Also yes. It's very refreshing for a romance subplot in an adult fantasy novel to not feel like insta-love. You can do the obvious almost fated mate style immediate attraction and pointing out to your readers who the end-game couple is while also giving us a slow build and yearning and Alex B. Harper has that down.
This book has undoubtedly brought me immense enjoyment, aligning with the fantasy genre that first captivated me as a reader. Of Light and Nightmares: The Ashes of Magic Trilogy, Volume I (An Urban Fantasy Series) marks the inception of an enthralling and promising saga skillfully written by Alex B. Harper. Anchored by the compelling character of Emmeline, an heiress entrusted with her parents' fortune and committed to continuing their philanthropic endeavors, the narrative takes an unforeseen twist when a rare public appearance thrusts her into a realm teeming with magic and malevolence. In order to safeguard our world, she must delve into the depths of a mysterious domain, encountering guardians and demons alike as she develops her nascent abilities. This remarkable fantasy tale effortlessly ensnares readers, compelling them to journey further into its enchanting pages. It proved to be a perfect read, one that effortlessly transported me to the cozy confines of my armchair, accompanied by a comforting cup of coffee. The story unfolds organically, each element meticulously crafted, with particular emphasis on the characters. Among them, Emmeline reigns as my unequivocal favorite, her captivating personality and growth throughout the novel truly resonating. Moreover, I am convinced that she possesses untapped potential, poised for further development in the subsequent installments of this series. For fans of the fantasy genre, this book is an absolute must-read, while also serving as an excellent entry point for those seeking their first foray into this realm of literary delight.
Alex Harper's latest offering crafts a world brimming with unique landscapes, characters, and vivid descriptions. The narrative weaves a captivating blend of reality and fantasy, effortlessly transitioning between the two. Harper's skillful storytelling establishes a connection with readers through a 'secret language' of sorts, engaging them in a journey that's both wild and transformative. The book boldly addresses challenging themes, a point Harper conscientiously highlights at the outset. While the narrative confronts difficult situations, it maintains an unexpectedly upbeat and, at times, playful tone. This juxtaposition of tones had a notable impact on my reading experience, as I found myself cycling through a spectrum of emotions. Balancing the narrative's heavier elements are moments of warmth and romance. These scenes unfold at a brisk pace compared to the more dramatic segments, adding a dynamic rhythm to the narrative and presenting an opportunity for further exploration and balance in future works. The novel marks a refreshing departure from the norm, offering originality in a literary landscape that often feels too familiar. A standout aspect of the book is the character of Emmeline. Her resilience and strength make her an inspiring figure, and her presence underscores the need for more such empowered female characters in literature.
As I eagerly anticipate the next installment in this series, I recommend this novel to those seeking a story that's both innovative and emotionally resonant. It's a commendable beginning to what promises to be an intriguing series.
This novel presents an enthralling blend of mystery and fantasy, captivating readers with its magical world filled with monsters and a well-crafted ensemble of characters. At the heart of the story is Emmeline, a compelling protagonist whose strength and complexity add depth to the narrative. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she discovers her inheritance and her unique ability to see nainthe—guardians who exist in a delicate balance between the human world and the raizour, menacing, demon-like creatures. The world-building in this book is particularly noteworthy. The author skillfully crafts a setting that seamlessly merges elements of reality and fantasy, enriching the urban fantasy genre. The introduction of the nainthe and raizour concepts is both creative and engaging, providing a novel twist to familiar themes. The pacing of the narrative is well-handled, striking an effective balance between action sequences and character arcs. This pacing makes Emmeline's transformation from a protected heiress to a pivotal figure in a cosmic struggle both believable and captivating. My personal experience with the book was extremely positive. It is a riveting tale, brimming with mysteries and unexpected developments that kept me eagerly turning pages. The author has quickly become a favorite of mine, creating a world that is as intimidating as it is mesmerizing. With a narrative that is both absorbing and thought-provoking, I am eagerly anticipating a sequel.
"Of Light and Nightmares: The Ashes of Magic Trilogy, Volume I" by Alex B Harper is a thrilling story that combines elements of fantasy, romance, and a battle against otherworldly creatures.
From the moment I delved into the pages of this captivating story, I found myself swept away by the author's vivid imagination and the enthralling world that was created and I couldn't put it down!! The main character's (Emmeline) progression was the highlight of the book. She starts as a refined heiress, content with her philanthropic work, but as she hones her abilities and faces the growing threats, she undergoes a transformation that surprises even herself. Her determination, resilience, and inner strength shine through, making her a compelling and inspiring female protagonist! I found myself rooting for her success and eagerly turning the pages to see how she overcame each new challenge.
Alex B Harper has crafted a captivating debut novel that leaves me eagerly anticipating their future works and I highly recommend "Of Light and Nightmares: The Ashes of Magic Trilogy, Volume I" to anyone seeking an adrenaline-fueled adventure with a touch of darkness, a glimmer of hope and budding romance that only exists in the shadows! I devoured this book in 2 short weeks and that's fast for me!! I thoroughly loved the world that was created with all the nuances of language and fantasy. I'm so invested and can't wait to read the next one in the series!!
Emmeline took over her family’s charity foundation at a relatively young age. Her brother, Mattie, is a doctor on the autism spectrum. Despite the wealth and privilege, they have lived fairly normal lives until Emmeline starts dating the city mayor and discovers that she is meant to help the nainthe guard against the demon-like monsters called the raizour.
The premise of a group of guardians protecting the world from evil is not a particularly unique one, but there was some interesting world building, and plenty of action. The characters got me, though. I became more attached than I expected to the core group and enjoyed the care that they displayed for each other. The fallout from the climactic scene had me tearing up.
My only real issue is that there were a couple of very serious plot holes at the cliffhanger ending. I’ll have to read the next to see if that is resolved but I am really looking forward to it!
The premise of this story was pretty cool. I don’t know if it’s original, but I don’t think I’ve read anything like it. As the first book in the series, this is off to an exciting start.
Harper does a fantastic job of the world-building with striking imagery. Some parts of the story felt like the pacing was too slow for me, and parts felt rushed. I get attached to characters quite quickly, and Emmeline was a character that was easy to get connected to.
In this story, Harper covers several sensitive issues and does it well. The book comes with trigger and content warnings, so please read those to decide if this book is for you. I don’t typically read dark fantasy, but this was enjoyable. This does end in a cliffhanger, so be warned. I felt like there could have been some conclusion and still have a series, but the way Harper ends the story leaves you wanting more.
This thrilling story follows a reclusive heiress, Emmeline, who would become the most unlikely yet sympathetic heroine. Her wealthy parents passed away almost a decade ago, and from a young age, she learned that when power and wealth were involved, the monsters came out in droves. Now an adult, she’s discovered that not only are there monsters, but they’re also from another world, and they’re on her doorstep looking for her. Emmeline realizes that she might be the salvation the monsters have been searching for, but she needs to decide if she’s willing to risk her life when she doesn’t know who, or what, she can trust.
I finished this book in under THREE DAYS. It was the absolute favourite part of my day to get lost in the story with my coffee after a long work day. Now I cannot wait for book 2 to be published fast enough!!
"Of Light and Nightmares: The Ashes of Magic Trilogy, Volume I" by Alex B Harper is a spellbinding urban fantasy that seamlessly combines magic, monsters, and a touch of romance. The author's skillful storytelling draws readers into a world where powers and creatures coexist, creating a thrilling backdrop for the unfolding tale. The infusion of romance adds depth to the narrative, while the inclusion of familiar landmarks provides a delightful sense of connection.
Harper's vivid prose and well-developed characters make this a truly enjoyable read. Eagerly anticipating the next volumes in the Trilogy!
Captivating story! Fantasy reads are supposed to be fantastical – and this one hits it all but with subtle tones of raw, dark, and very human emotions swirling within it. Looking forward to the next book in this series!
First time I annotated a whole book.. and omg the feels!!!! This book was so so good! I loved it! And the ending? It can't end that way😫 my Erik, Ms Rose, Emmia ughhh I love them all 🫶🏼
Great read! Intense and an emotional roller coaster, while also having some great light hearted moments/banter. Can’t wait to see what happens in book #2!
Amazing story with lots of details & suspense & imagination; so magical! Once you start the book, it’s hard to put down. Love it that Emmeline, the heroine, lives in Toronto. Can’t wait for the next volume!
I absolutely loved this book and need the next two books now!! I was nervous to read it because lately I’ve felt burnt out from fantasies because of all the info dumps and intricate world building. But this book was so well written. The information was presented so well that it didn’t feel overwhelming or forced. I loved the world created here and want to know more about the Nianthe and the Raizour. The pacing was perfect and everything included in the story felt intentional. There wasn’t a lot of added fluff, instead everything felt like there’s was a reason and context to it, even if we won’t know it until later.
I loved every single character. Emia is one of my new favorite female main characters. I loved how strong she was and how she always fought for herself and the people she loved. She made sure she was taken seriously and not walked all over. She didn’t need someone else to come in and speak for her, she did it herself even when she was scared. She’s also full of empathy and cares for so many people. She is one of the best written FMC’s I’ve read in a while.
The only thing negative thing is I’m not a big fan of the cover. But that’s just my personal opinion about not liking real people on covers.
Thank you to MTMC Tours for sending me a free copy of this book for a book tour!
Rose ran from the fae courts to a reclusive life in a northern village keeping most of her abilities hidden. When the encroaching mist hits too close to home and she learns her weapons can help, she can no longer avoid her past.
Luc, the handsome fae sent to investigate her skills is more dangerous than he appears. Deadly and determined, Luc is on a mission from the courts to stop the plague of mists. Rose must decide if he's her enemy, ally, or more as he threatens to uncover the secrets she's kept long buried. I liked Rose as an FMC. She had an interesting past, she’s strong and intelligent. I also liked the Compass Points World building and the magic system. One of my favourite characters is Arie, the shapeshifter!
Mi è piaciuta Rose come FMC. Ha avuto un passato interessante, è forte e intelligente.
Ma quello che mi è piaciuto di più è il world building di Compass Points e il sistema magico.
Uno dei miei personaggi preferiti è Arie, il mutaforma!
The premise of this book was so interesting—I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like it, which is awesome! The author did an amazing job with the world-building and foreshadowing. I really appreciated how much the characters grew throughout the story—finding their sense of identity and making real sacrifices.
The characters were strong and had such distinct personalities that I honestly felt like I could be friends with them. As a dark fantasy lover, I was totally sucked into the world. The author really nailed the atmosphere and tone of the genre.
I’ll admit, I struggled a bit with the beginning—the world-building was dense enough that my eyes glazed over at times (though that’s probably a me problem, since I have the attention span of a gnat). But once the story picked up, it really picked up.
It ends on a cliffhanger, and now I’m counting down the days until the next book comes out!
I could not put this book down and absolutely adored the storyline and the characters! It’s an adult fantasy (not YA, so the characters are a little older), and I almost want to call it a “post-coming-of-age” story. So addictive and that slow-burn romance had me hooked. Love, love, love!!!
I enjoyed this book from the first page to last! The setting, the characters and the magic - it's great! If you're a fan of urban fantasy, you need to read this.
