A misguided assumption twisted love into obsession.
Chloe
Years had passed since my life crumbled around me at university. From that point on, nothing had ever worked out right. As if an invisible hand always moved to ruin things.
When a family tragedy forced me back to Sheffield, I was reminded why I hesitated to return. Liam Reid was the reason I avoided this city. They say the CEO has a heart of steel with his ability to decimate businesses – but it wasn’t just companies at risk of devastation.
Once again, I found myself face-to-face with the man that shattered me.
How will I survive this time?
Liam
A decade ago, Chloe wrecked me, levelling my very foundation to the ground. I never forgot. I took my rage and fuelled an empire, destroying the competition and monopolising every game I played.
All this time, I watched her, plotting and waiting for the right moment. Now she was back on my turf, and all bets were off.
She is mine. Mine to catch, mine to keep, and mine to break.
Steel Vengeance is the first in the Steel Ventures series. It can be read as a standalone. It is a contemporary romance that has dark themes. Please check the trigger warnings. There are dual points of view, MF explicit scenes, and a happily ever after is guaranteed.
And what is this obssession with elephants! Anyway
I can't believe that in 2023 we still have the helpless, poor-unfortunate-soul, need rescuing woman
I couldn't with this book. I wanted to love it because it was listed under top 10 best grovelling books of 2023
⛔⛔Spoilers⛔⛔
Chloe is SAed in college and a tape circulated about the night Liam thinks she cheated on him (get this) because she dared to have a little life outside of his so he thinks she's withdrawing from him and believes she cheated
10 years later, they are reunited He is a successful billionaire who took the blow and instead of bringing him down it made him thrive and driven
Chloe Oh what a mess!!! really? Of every character you could give to your MFL , you choose the crying one!
So we have Chloe before SA and after
We know nothing about her before expect when she mentions here and there about her life There is nothing interesting about her except -shocker- she is BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL 🙄
She is sweet, kind, helpful, docile A plant in short
Then she is SAed (for a very stupid reason) And this is where she lost me
Nowadays Women are a powerhouse We are not broken We are not weak We do not let the worst stop us This is not the 1960s Not even 2010
What kind of message is this book conveying?!
She gets SAed but doesn't report it? She throws her clothes and washes her self destroying all evidence? How stupid is that!
And then she shuts down No ambition No overcoming No accomplishment Instead of letting the ordeal lift you up She let it drag her down!
I understand that many SA victim would do that But she is not 18! She is 30!!! Went to therapy Be fucking fierce!!
Instead she let's everyone push her around and control her life In almost every chapter she is either hurt, crying, running, acting like a child, crying sone more, lusting over Liam, crying and more crying
Plus, the author seems to try to cram as many trope lines as the book can hold "Who did this to you?" "Touch her and you die" "Mine" "One bed"
This is a second chance read with an obsessive hero.
Liam and Chloe (who are both around 30) used to date in college, but when she was assaulted and video of it went around, Liam thought she cheated on him. He wasn't there for her when she needed him, and he pushed her away. In the 10 years since then, as he's become a wealthy CEO, he's wanted revenge for her breaking his heart - he's mad at her, but also obsessed. For years, he's stalked her (by getting a PI to take photos of her), and he's also bought every company she's worked for, forcing her to frequently move and change jobs (she doesn't know this is his fault). Now, 10 years later, he's manipulated the situation so that she takes a job at his company (so there's some boss / employee trope, too).
This isn't as dark a read as it sounds. He intends to be mean to her when she's working for him, but he drops that plan almost instantly. There's decent angst when he finds out that he was wrong and was very stupid. There's also some grovel. We don't really get their past timeline, we're just told about their college days in retrospect. I feel mixed about this. We didn't need flashbacks, really. But, I also would have felt more invested in their relationship if we got to see more of it.
The characters are a little bland, but they're not bad. Also, I saw one review saying that it's not believable how in the past after she was SAed, Chloe threw out her clothes and didn't tell the cops. I just need to say that review is bullshit. People respond to that in different ways, and don't always think clearly, after! Was Chloe being smart? No! But, her reaction was 100% believable and human.
Overall, this book is nothing special, but it's fine for if you're in the mood for these tropes. And I like that it has a non-standard setting (it's set in England. But where London would be the obvious choice, this is set in the somewhat random smaller city of Sheffield).
It's apparently the author's first book, it's a decent first effort. Also there are some intriguing side characters, like Liam's Irish mafia cousin Sean, and his business partner Oscar. Since this says it's the first in a series, I assume they'll get books. I wasn't wowed by this, but it was fine enough that I'll check out more from this author when she releases more.
After my most recent book review, I can say in all confidence that the writing style and the plot makes or breaks a book. Coming as a totally opposite reading experience to the last book I reviewed, the writing style in this book carries proudly the book all through. I don't have enough words and sophistication to explain exactly why the writing style of CCG worked for me but I can say that I was damned impressed.
📿 Writing style: captivating, nicely witty, neat and smart turn of phrases.
🔩 Plot: This one goes in so many surprising, different directions! It is OTT at times, sure (and CCG did warn at the beginning of the book), but the writing carries it. Looking into the depth of Liam's obsession into Chloe was alarming but at the same time there was empathy towards him. Again, I totally blame the prose style 😁! So many plot twists surprised me very much by their fresh originality: the Board game 'surprise', Liam's descent into hell, Liam's time in rehab and visit to his old neighbourhood. I am starting to sound like a broken record, but the fluid writing was really top notch on these.
📿 Romance: definitely not an everyday one. Liam and Chloe do not react as an average person would do, BUT everything they did and said totally made sense in their world building. I, for one, would normally have stuck hard to the betrayal/ resentment feeling from Liam's abandonment years ago; I would certainly not have quasi melted when we met ten years later. BUT somehow, the writing made it work! It created the psychology, even inferred, and the ambience that had me accept serenely the BBS. In this book, Liam f*cks it up big twice. Did the grovel work? It was originally done. I am not sure I would have let it go, BUT it worked well for the book and Chloe. So yes, good grovel from my reader's pov.
🔩 Trivia point: They marry in Mauritius! Ah Motherland 😊!
Small nitpick point that I found weird in-story was It didn't influence my rating though. What kept this book from being a 5 GR stars is the fact that I had no butterflies while getting into the angst festering between Liam and Chloe. I was in turn amused, sympathetic, sad, startled, but not teary and heartbroken. But then I don't think that this was the aim of the book either.
CCG's pen is certainly an experience. One that I want to get lost in again. I will look into Book 2!
P.S. British English for a Brit story: 👍👍👍

Few tags because it's been a while since I read and don't remember a whole lot other than I liked it. I am in full amnesia mode. Scary times...for me.
Anyhoo, I remember liking it despite some too well worn tropes as the writing was good, and the hero's version of getting revenge was along the lines of giving her milk chocolate when she wanted dark chocolate. Due to a BIG MISUNDERSTANDING they broke up, and he's been stalking monitoring her since.
After a brutal attack in college leaves Chloe's life in shambles, she's spent the last ten years bouncing between jobs and trying to figure out what to do with herself. When her grandmother passes away and another one of the companies she has joined gets purchased, Chloe finds herself with a small gig at the company owned by her friend's dad. But when that company gets bought up too, she once again finds herself floundering.
Chloe has avoided coming home for years since her ex became a big shot in town, and it's no secret that she can't stand even the mention of his name. When she joins a tour for job interviews at various companies, she finds herself in his company and under his scrutiny. For once, she's offered a job in her degree field, and though hesitant, she takes it when Liam claims he doesn't remember her.
Of course, that's a lie on Liam's part. He's never forgotten Chloe or the things that transpired between them in college. But when things aren't what they seem to have been and the truth about all those years ago is exposed, can the duo forgive each other? Or is their second chance at romance doomed before it can even begin again?
***************
Written in alternating first-person POV, "Steel Vengeance" follows a second-chance romance between Chloe and Liam where a man's twisted love turns into a terrible obsession. And the evils of others can never be forgiven or forgotten.
I've never been so angry with a book in my life. I want to rate this book at 2 stars, but I decided to be nice and round it up to 3 because this was probably a 2.5-star read at most.
The romance between Liam and Chloe was...crazy, to put it mildly. Chloe forgave him for a lot of crazy stuff and it worries me how much his behavior was romanticized. Liam and Chloe dated in college and they broke up because he was told she cheated on him, but Chloe was actually assaulted at a party. Instead of him asking or talking to her, he believes what a random acquaintance tells him since she also distanced herself from him for a few weeks. And then a video of her assault gets shared around campus. She can't remember much about the events of that night, and when she needed Liam the most, he abandoned her. When they meet a decade later, he intends on ruining her life because...reasons? I'm honestly very confused about why she kept going back to him and would excuse his behavior.
The whole addiction/obsession rehab thing was very strange. I feel like it was too rushed and glossed over, and it was just so weird to read. Liam was actually crazy and dangerous. He stalked Chloe or hired people to stalk her for him for literal years. He even committed a pretty serious crime in the name of justice for her. Which she forgives and ignores.
I just can't put into words how disappointed I was in this book. I wanted to like it, but I can't excuse the deranged actions of an obsessive crazy man intent on harming a woman he claims to love. And that freaking board game. I can't believe that was what broke the camel's back for Chloe. She was right to leave the freaking country for a while to get a break from the crazy that was Liam and his associates. But I finished the book, the characters got their happily ever after, and the spicy scenes between Chloe and Liam were enjoyable for the most part.
I received a free copy of this book via the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The writing on this fell so flat for me. He believes someone else when they tell.him that she cheated but she was roofied by a school acquaintance who wanted to go into business with him. The school guy thought the h was a liability and wanted to get rid of her. She was at a bar waiting for the H and she was drugged and raped. Later on, she moves back to their Sheffield town and he gets her to come work for him. He has a pi on her, manipulated her, etc
The beginning was pretty good but the book was just so......flat 🤷😂 just the author telling you what's happening in a bullet point. No interesting things happening, no twists, just boring. I finished but 😐
Omg. This book. I need to double the number of stars. When Chloe hurt her toe? I limped. When Liam confessed? I sobbed. I've never been so blessed to be given the chance to ARC for someone i admire so greatly before today.
This book is sweet, sexy, morally grey, and everything you've been looking for for your next weekend read.
I loved this book so much that I read it in under 24 hours. The development of the FMC and MMC was brilliant. The plot was complex in places, with great spice. Highly recommend.
Best book I’ve read in a long time! I love the chemistry between Liam and Chloe even after all the years apart. This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I’m about to go buy her other books. Definitely suggest giving it a read, you won’t be disappointed!
-Check the trigger warnings before reading the book-
It all started with the authors note. When she told her mom not to keep reading I knew it was going to be good!
It was the best of both worlds rolled into 1. The story definitely had its romcom feel and moments but it also had its dark and real moments too. I devoured this book in 24Hrs!
The character development we got for both MC’s in such a short time was incredible. They were complex but so deep. CC did an amazing job! Her background really helped while writing them and their back stories/ development.
Reading Liam and Chloe’s love story as toxic as it might be at some moments was warming.
I can not wait to see what else CC has in store for us! Impatiently waiting for Steel Brothers book 2 and other books she’ll publish! Lol
When I read the Author Note, I couldn't help but laugh and knew I'd like this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and characters, so much so that it didn't take me long to finish as I couldn't put it down. The slang and local vernacular was great even if the Irish terminology took a beat to get my head around. Thank you CC Gedling for allowing me to be part of your ARC and I look forward to more great books.
Romance trope: second chance Series: Steel Ventures Length: 322 pages
Plot: Liam and Chloe were a couple in university but when a sex tape circulated around campus showing Chloe with another guy, Liam ghosted her. The truth was that . Neither of them can get over what happened and even though Liam knows what Chloe has been up to all these years, Chloe doesn't come back to town until she loses her last job and needs to find shelter with a friend. Through a series of circumstances, she ends up working for Liam and he is determined to seek revenge - but at what cost?
Commentary: There was a lot going on in this book - second chance love, revenge plot, addiction, sexual assault, secret villain, office romance, plucky best friend, mysterious noble business partner, yoga, Florida, Monopoly. I felt like there were some things that could have been left out and the plot would have been a little tighter and more focused. But it was an engaging story and I did want to see how Liam groveled. He did okay for an idiot.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved the characters and never knew who I wanted to root for. I was thoroughly invested in the main characters and their mental health like they were real people. But it's a great book and I can't wait to read about the other characters in future stories.
I absolutely loved this book! The build up of key events kept me on the edge of my seat making it next to impossible to put down. I felt the author provided enough detail in her writing that understanding the British slang words was straight forward. If you like a slow burning, steamy love/hate romance then this book is a must read!
This book was delicious. Just the right amount of drama, misunderstanding, angst, groveling, and forgiveness. No one checked their brain at the door and, surprise, the BFF actually behaved like a BFF.
Surprised that this is the first published book by the author! It was mentioned in one of my book groups and I’m so Glad I bought it. Really looking forward to the second book in the series.
the book was stretched, repeated scenes..especially in the starting. i would give more star ⭐, if this was shorter with smoother pace as this book had potential
I was part of the ARC team for this book, and I’m so glad I was chosen!
I found this captive from the offset, my plan was to read a few chapters then have time to digest what I had read however that did not work as once I started it was difficult to put down!
The twists and turns were nail biting and had me on the edge of my seat at times. The spice level of this book is suitable to read in public spaces. The growth of the main characters was excellent and the palpable chemistry between them was well portrayed by the author.
This book had me on an emotive rollercoaster and trapped me within its chapters until I’d finished. That in itself speaks volumes of the authors writing ability.
Well, I felt so sorry for Chloe throughout this book. That soulmate love must be so damn powerful for Chloe & Liam to overcome things, intentions aside I don’t know that most people would make it like they did. I am pretty interested in Oscar’s book after getting the glimpses of him in this!
I absolutely loved this book! I got an ARC and although never read anything by the author before but now I’m going to find all her other books. It was a rip your heart out and put it back together, over and over again type book. It made me craze reading it, needing to know what was going to happen next. My only complaint would be that it ended too soon! I’m not ready to let go of Liam and Chloe. Besides falling in love with Liam and absolutely empathizing with Chloe and being so proud of her growth and strength, I also found myself intrigued by the supporting player and now I need to no more about Penny’s future, Sean’s backstory and Oscar’s mystery. You can’t go wrong with Steele Vengeance- it’s spicy, emotional and has a well-written, strong storyline.
Every character in this book was unbearable and Liam was such a pathetic whiny loser. I do agree tho the grovel was good like I’m glad Chloe didn’t just forgive him straight off the bat even when he went on his knees crying lmao.
3⭐️ The plot was okay, but I deducted stars because IMO this H was terrible (possible spoilers ahead) I do appreciate that the author warned that this H may not be redeemable by readers and the h says that in her POV too. 🤷♀️
⛔️SPOILERS *Backstory* H and h were college sweethearts. H loved her so much, he planned to propose. h went to a bar with some friends and she was drugged. She was then raped and the whole thing was filmed. While she was still passed out, the rapist sent messages from her phone to H, breaking up with him. Then the video was released. Due to how everything played out, H thought h cheated on him. H ghosted h. h was in such a bad place mentally, she never reached out. He did try to talk with her a week later, but h’s BFF told him to fk off.
So…for 10 years, H has HATED h. He has been stalking her. Every single time she gets a new job, he buys up the company, then fires her. (She does not know this) Like…this H is obsessed with destroying h.
————
The book starts with h moving back to her hometown after her gran died. Her BFF’s dad is letting her work for him.
H is getting oral from a bad lookalike h he hired from an escort service 🙄🙄 when we are introduced to him. He’s super excited that h has moved back to town because now he can finally end her. He’s scheming to get h working for him so he can seduce her, then destroy her. (The whole plan makes no sense to me)
She’s only working for her BFF’s dad for a short time before his company is sold. After some job searching, she ends up working for H’s company…..basically as his PA. H doesn’t actually hate h for very long. He starts trying to hook up with her the first day. 😂😂 He becomes a major caveman and HE. JUST. WILL. NOT. LEAVE. HER. ALONE (if his plans were to embarrass her, then he definitely succeeded)
*sidenote* The rapist was a “friend” of H. He was some scummy guy who was always trying to get H to buy into one of his get rich schemes. H basically ignored him. The rapist had another guy help him drug h and rape her and video tape her. Why? Because he wanted h out of the way because he thought h made H weak. *confused face* ( The motive could have been that he just wanted her. I wasn’t sure why there needed to be some big conspiracy about wanting H’s money.🤷♀️) Quote from scummy guy:
“I wanted her gone. I knew you’d make it big. I wanted to partner with you. She had you thinking about marriage and babies” ——— Anyway, h has a TON of trauma due to the rape. Scummy dude shows up at H’s office to pitch another scheme and h has a total breakdown. H starts to suspect something and finally…………after 10 years…….. THEY TALK H finds out everything and he feels guilty. GOOD! He should.
H has this friend who is in the mafia, I guess. They take the scummy dude and torture the real story out of him. H kills him
H and h are living together. All is good, but you just know the whole house of lies H has set up is going to crash soon. They are engaged.
Welp! She finds out H destroyed her life/jobs for 10 years. She is big mad. He’s trying to explain but there no good explanation for what he did. h gives him back the ring and leaves. Later, she’s going to America for 8 weeks for some yoga thing. At the airport, H is on his knees, crying, begging her to not leave and she’s like fk off.
H goes on a drunk bender and his buddy gets him into rehab and therapy. h spends her time reading his letters.
H is arrested for killing scummy guy. h finds out and flies back. She’s decided to forgive him. The police have nothing on H, so he’s let go. 🤷♀️ H and h talk and decide to date and take it slow….except she’s living with him. The epilogue is a while later where they get married and he gifts her with her own yoga studio.
I’m sorry I just don’t think I could ever forgive somebody who destroyed my life for 10 years. This woman struggled and had no money because of the things he did.
1st let me begin with the Dedication, it had me laughing from the start, along with the verbiage of UK, there’s so many 1-liners that I love & instantly laughed at (TY Pen!)
I was an ARC📚for “Steel Vengeance” the opinion is my own☺️this is also my 1st book from C. C. Gedling I’m excited to add more of her other works on my TBR list!
Can’t wait to see what’s in store for Oscar and Penny!
Blurb:
Liam and Chloe dated (over a decade ago) at Uni They loved and doted on each other until an incident sent Chloe’s life spiraling out of control. When she needed Liam the most he hasn’t there. She goes on living as best as she can, when a family tragedy brings her back home to Sheffield, her Bestie Penny (love Pen) and Liam.
Liam is a CEO along with his best friend Oscar. Liam has never forgotten about Chloe, nor the incident that caused them to break up. He has sworn vengeance, watching her, plotting, hiring a PI to keep tabs on Chloe, waiting for the perfect opportunity to make her pay for breaking his heart.
But not everything is as it seems, what will Chloe do when she reunites with Liam? What will Liam do when he uncovers the truth, about what happened during their Uni dating years?
The character growth for Liam is what I enjoyed the most, he’s dead set on vengeance, he comes off as dark, obsessive, domineering, driven by his need to tear Chloe apart in every possible way; emotionally, mentally and physically. It’s overwhelming at times how manipulative, stealthy and hateful/resentful he plotted every detail driven purely by blind rage, anger, hurt and betrayal. Then he quickly tries to right his mistakes, however not being vulnerable, open and owning his actions will have major consequences with Chloe, it’ll be his downfall and will cost them their future The Liam we met in the beginning is completely different from the Liam we see in the end, I love a multifaceted character. Same with Chloe, she seems extremely fragile, masking how she truly feels, this also doesn’t help their relationship because they’re both closed off. The Chloe in the end is strong, sure of herself, inspiring. I love how their individual journeys show you, how loving a person correctly and unconditionally, without any manipulation and selfishness, will not only heal wounds, but create a healthy relationship and future. They both still have a lot to work on, but the foundation is set in place!
This book had me crying as I read along their own struggles and addiction, facing their demons, while cheering the individual characters through their own personal journey, until they were ready to share their peace with each other. Highly recommend!

Steel Vengeance by CC Gedling is a dark contemporary romance set in Sheffield UK and is the first book of the Steel Ventures Series. This is the author’s first published book and her first try at this genre, but she’s definitely not new to writing. I have read all her previous 4 books on Dreame under her paranormal author pen name, CrimpyG, and absolutely loved her writing style. I knew I would enjoy anything she would write and wasn’t disappointed at all. She brings in her medic background and expertly describes trauma, emotions, characters dealing with it and overcoming it in the end. Her witty British humor shines through her characters and even her hilarious author note as well.
If you love spicy dark romances with a strong plot and morally gray male leads who are possessive, obsessive, ruthless to others but would have a soft spot for those they care for, and redeem themselves through realistic character growth, then this is just the book for you. Be sure to take care of your mental health and read the trigger warnings.
The story follows Chloe Fraser who was forced to return to her hometown of Sheffield to clear out her late grandmother’s house. She has avoided returning due to the presence of a certain ex from uni who left her devastated a decade ago, but as “fate” would have it, she comes face to face with him on his own premises! Liam Reid is a ruthless, self made, millionaire investor that has a secret obsession with his ex from uni who broke his heart all those years ago. He has refused to let go, making it his obsession and a game to bring her back just to break her.
The story has a gripping plot line that has you hooked from the beginning. Leaving you wanting to learn more about the reason for their fallout all those years ago and what incident led to the break up and Chloe’s trauma. The characters are well written, with realistic growth arcs and relatable traits. You will fall in love with not only the main leads but the supporting characters as well. You get sass and levity from David, loyalty and protectiveness from Penny and respect and genuine care from Oscar and mystery and danger from Sean.
The pacing was great, the story wasn’t dragged nor rushed. I was completely invested. Nothing was left unanswered and all plotlines were wrapped up nicely with no plot holes. I was thoroughly satisfied with the ending and we were given a nice teaser for the second book as well. I am extremely excited to read the story about Liam’s partner, Oscar.
All in all, an amazingly written story and a definite must read. I would highly recommend it!
I'll start by saying that dark romance and morally grey main characters are hardly my cup of tea. However, I read all Claire’s previous 4 books on Dreame and LOVED them. So since this is Claire's book, I just could not pass up reading it. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to both alpha-read the first draft and an ARC copy. The experience of influencing, no matter how slightly, the work of one of my favorite authors was extremely satisfying. And to the book now. First – take note this book has trigger warnings and don’t treat them lightly, Claire is very good in describing trauma. Check the warnings on her site. Second, I haven't seen the light, I still prefer to read non-dark romance and I still don't like morally grey heroes, but I honestly thought there's no chance in hell I'll even slightly like Liam at the end and want him and Chloe to be together... But I was wrong. Claire's writing is just that good. It's in the small details that make the story fun to read (like the staplers in Graham's shop), in the witty humor, in the right buildup of the plot and characters. In the very accurate and rich description of everything from the surrounding to the characters' feelings, and that everything makes perfect sense. Both Liam and Chloe had amazing character development arcs that felt completely genuine, both together and apart 💜 When we (the alpha team) got chapter 37, and Claire warned it's essentially the last, I was like "how the hell can all the missing info be covered in one chapter in a successful way?!?!" well it was, and done wonderfully. The story wasn’t dragged or felt like it’s missing something, every detail served a purpose, and everything was wrapped up very well, except the very well placed teaser at the end! There are 3 things that always must exist in a book for me to give it 5 stars, and two more that really help. The main 3 are Great descriptions of feelings, all sensible happenings, and no plot holes. And I also prefer there to be a happy ending and a sense of "right" in the plot... it's hard to explain what I mean. This book definitely has the main 3, and the happy ending. Liam's (and Sean's 😝) very grey morality is not my cup of tea, as I said, but that's the only setback for me. Also, nice smut scenes! I can’t wait for the sequel(s?) and anything else Claire will write in the future.
This is a very good book and particularly for a first book. It deals very sympathetically with trauma responses and also with obsession.
I thought both main characters were drawn very well and I felt so much for Chloe and what she'd been through and at times I was in tears especially after her encounter with Harte. I felt sympathy for Liam too although of course his behaviour was very stalkerish and his obsession did indeed go beyond what could be considered reasonable. He is, however, a good man at heart (the way he pays all his father's bills and the youth club show that) who has been devastated by the fact that he had been so wrong about Chloe. I felt sorry for him after the third act break up but totally understood Chloe's viewpoint: to discover that every time she had tried to rebuild her life he had somehow put a spoke in the wheel was awful for her, no matter what his motive. I loved his letters.
Penny and Oscar were both incredible and very loyal friends. Do I think Penny should have told Liam at university what happened? Yes. Do I think she should have told Chloe at university that Liam had tried to see her? Yes. Equally do I think that Liam should have made more effort to see Chloe? Yes. However it's fiction so we need the conflict.
Sadly what is not fiction is the fact that in the UK 5 out of 6 women who are raped do NOT report it. Of those cases which are reported, less than 3% get to court but only half of those result in conviction. (Stats from Rape Crisis.)
Chloe's reactions in the aftermath are completely normal and hardly surprising. If you haven't experienced something similar don't criticise Chloe for her behaviour afterwards or in subsequent years. Even if you have experienced something similar don't criticise Chloe for her behaviour afterwards or in subsequent years. Everyone reacts differently and some people take longer to recover than others. Fiction or not, her story is not your story.
I liked the premise of revenge on Liam's behalf towards Chloe. Having made himself into a wealthy man with al the power and money at his fingertips, he has manipulated Chloe's life to where she is now back in their hometown and has no choice but to become his employee. Chloe, unbeknownst to her, has no idea that Liam orchestrated all of this and their breakup still sheds misery in her heart nearly 10 years later. Both parties were deeply hurt by the other and their two versions of the story do not match up. I admired how Chloe still managed to continue with the kind of grace and class that made her an admirable heroine. As for Liam, his obsession runs deep and this is where I ran into some problems with the story. It didn't bother me with how jealous or possessive he was, but since this was dual POV and Liam's thoughts were shared rather early on, I didn't enjoy how quickly he shifted gears from wanting to watch Chloe suffer at his hands to becoming a complete overbearing and protective employer to full on boyfriend ready to put a ring on it. Granted, it was ten years coming, but I would've preferred a bit more build up. As for the overall fallout and revelation, watching Liam crumble wasn't enjoyable either because he pretty much turns into a complete disaster and it was hard to read because I don't like seeing strong males turn pathetic. Kudos to Chloe for staying strong and not folding right away. While the story template was intriguing, the execution wasn't as well delivered to my preference as I would like. However, many others who enjoy watching a revenge plot turn into a mistake unravel into a grovel will likely be appealing to others.
