A rounded portrait of William Joyce, better known as Lord Haw-Haw. It follows his life from Irish peasant to a broadcaster for the Third Reich and covers his trial and execution.
fascinating insight into a complicated character from his childhood to the end of world war two. very well researched and written and quite a fast read too.
Genuinely fascinating and thought provoking in that it made me consider what personality traits would lead a person to become a fascist under normal circumstances. Sanctimoniousness, elitism, a mercurial nature, idolatry of strong men, affinity with establishment and hierarchy as well as a straight up lack of conscience for sure, and William Joyce, the man most associated with Lord Haw, possessed them in spades. However, the human foibles of Joyce are shown while not humanizing him to the point of sympathy. Despite its length, it’s definitely readable in one sitting. Highly recommended as a psychological profile as well as for those interested in World War 2 history.
