Son of a small shopkeeper, he attended Manchester Grammar School. He later said that he made poor uses of his opportunities there. He went to work in an insurance office, but later entered Manchester University, taking a degree in History. A post-graduate year at Exeter University led to a schoolmaster's position, first at a village school in Devon, then for seven years at Millfield. During this time he wrote a dozen radio plays, which were broadcast. Encouraged by the London success of his stage play "Flowering Cherry" he left teaching for full-time writing. 1960 saw two of his plays ("The Tiger And The Horse" and "A Man For All Seasons") running concurrently in the West End.

This book left a wonderful impression on me. It has a nostalgic appeal too. I remember we read it at school. Each pupil got to be a character. We all had jolly good fun reading this and I can still picture an old school mate - John Duckmanton, who got to be Oblong Fitzoblong. The class was giggling and laughing at all of the antics.

It is a comical tale of knights in the days of old. Sir Oblong Fitzoblong is sent on a quest to defeat a dragon that lives on the unsavoury Baron Boligrew's island. Sir Oblong is sent on the quest to get him out of the way.

A smashing and comical yarn that I would recommend to anyone. If you have a mind to do a stage play and entertain local villagers, one might give this a try, it's a regular bag of laughs from start to finish.

The Last Days of Thunder Child

I played the Dragon in a school production of The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew, which is a great part as I was off stage with a copy of the play and a microphone. I was about 10-11 at the time. But I was suitably dragonesque for someone whose voice hadn't broken.

It's a fun play. Don't hear about it getting performed much anymore.

Dates of reading are rough btw. Year is probably right. Month is guesswork.

آخر کتاب همه‌ش فکر می‌کردم که چرا این‌قدر بچگونه بود این نمایشنامه و تازه اون‌وقت دیدم که پشت جلد نوشته بودن گروه مخاطب کتاب پسران زیر بیست‌سال بوده که البته به نظر من حداقل باید تا زیر پونزده سال پایین میومد، یعنی حتی به عنوان کتاب کودک هم به نظرم بیش از حد کودکانه بود

Not a panto but a family show with enough laughs to keep the adults happy. Loses a bit of pace in the second half and could do with some cutting.

A funny, odd little play. Act two was a little rushed and everything was tied up very neatly and easily, but overall it has a definite endearing and lovely quality.
