Brief Summary
This book deals with preaching and teaching from the Old Testament. The introduction points out that the Old Testament provides certain challenges for our contemporary culture due to its perceived archaic nature, its supposed superseded status versus the New Testament, and the force of habit due to the church’s general tendency to focus on the New Testament. The first part of the book, chapters one through four, focusses upon the need for the church to preach the Old Testament, dea

As a guide for the pastor of a congregation needing a deeper drink of Old Testament theology, Kaiser’s work provides a helpful starting point. By breaking down each genre of Old Testament literature into chapters, Preaching becomes more of a utility – much like a commentary or reference work - than a treatise on Old Testament theology. However, Kaiser does the reader a service by providing concluding thoughts and reasoning behind his use of each sermon preparation and delivery method.

Surprisingly, the most helpful sections of this book for me were the Appendices. While the bulk of the book was informative, it was not what the title seems to suggest it would be. Kaiser doesn't as much walk through HOW to preach the different genres of the Old Testament, but rather explains the genres in a way that makes a genre and its characteristics easy to identify and organize. Of course, this is necessary, but it read more like a college level introduction to genre than a "how-to" of "Pr ...more
