3.5 awesome stars!

I had a lot of mixed feeling with Vaempires: Revolution: Zombies Rising. On one hand I really enjoyed the story and especially getting to know a lot more about the secondary characters Ray and Linq. This book was mainly about them as is written from there POV. The reader gets to find out what happened to both Ray's and Linq's family after the war broke out. In this story both teens are making their way back to Daniel and Cassie. Earlier Cassie left Linq to go back herself and find her true love Daniel but runs into someone from her past. This surely puts a damper on her plans. Soon after Cassie left, Linq and Ray decide to go after her in hopes to also be able to find Daniel, Dead or Alive. Both hoping they will not be to late. Of course both teens run into trouble and must fight their way ahead. One thing neither Ray or Linq were expecting to see or have to fight are the undead, undead. Yeah, makes no sense right? Zombie Vaempires, oh boy! Something or someone is raising these ungodly creatures from the dead. Ray and Linq will do everything they kill these zombies, again and find there way to Daniel before it's to late.

The Good and the Bad (not so good!)

Good: I really loved that the story was focused on the secondary characters Ray and Linq. I enjoyed learning about there lives and emotions. The fighting scenes where amazing and gory. The author does a really nice job at making the reader feel like they are right there fighting along with the characters. Thomas Winship writing is very distinguished and easy to read. There is never a dull moment in this book and left me wanting more.

Bad: TOO SHORT! Although the story was great the book itself could have been longer. It left me wanting more and with the feeling of being empty towards the end. Also, there were parts in the book that just make me say "Ewwww". I have never been bothered by a scary or gory novel, this one really turned my stomach.

All in all I am very happy that I was able to read The Evolutionary War series. These books really took me by surprise. They all were a lot better than I first though they would be. I will definitely be reading the next installment.

This book is the second book in the Evolutionary War series between two warring species; the Vampires and the mutated Vaempire’s. This book stayed faithful to the first starting and ending with action, action, and more action. This book was definitely more hack and slash than usual and I felt the story line was muted because of the constant fight scenes with the boys, who again, are just too young even if vampire, to maintain a strong heroic visual for me. However, I do love me some mindless hack and slash, blow flowing action sequences at times as a nice refresher to many of the female writers who often soften the scenes. I would in fact compare Winship’s usage of action to the writings of Laurell K. Hamilton, a writer who doesn’t hold back, who writes exactly what she is feeling, and knows that her typical readers will love it.

In book 2, Vielyn, leader of the Vaempires is out to destroy the world and is searching for atomic weapons to do so. The city has all but become a ghost town as the vampires flee for safety and most of their loved ones have been slain. Linq and Ray are on a mission to reach Cassandra and Daniel at the Castle before it is too late and something bad happens to her also. The story thickens as they enter one of the Castle yards and a faint heart beat can be heard. Upon further investigation the boys notice it belongs to a frail girl. They debate over killing her then get distracted. Before they know it all hell breaks loose again and all of the dead Vaempires that were just lying cold at their feet are being reanimated into zombies. With Ray still weakened from an earlier fight and all of the synth blood depleted, will the boys make it to the Princess and Daniel before it’s too late?

While I thought this book was even better than the first, I felt the ending left me hanging and I was expecting more. And why would Cassandra return to her room for what seems like hours, when she knows that Vielyn is looking for her? We know from the first book she is not stupid, so this turn of sequence shocked me. I highly recommend if you are going to read the first book to just go ahead and pick up this book also as you really won’t be let down at all.

MY REVIEW
I received a free copy of this book from Thomas Winship as I had reviewed his two other titles in this series and really enjoyed those.
As you know I am always totally honest in my reviews so here goes, I truly did not like the cover initially, my reaction was Yuuuuck! and I really didn't care for it at all wondering what on earth it was. Then once I read the book, I realised it was a representation on the Vaempire/Zombie eyes. Once the horrible eye cover made sense it wasn't as horrible (if that makes sense) and I ended up quite liking the image on the cover.
At the very beginning of this book is what I would call a recap chapter in that it gives you a concise run down on Vaempires Christmas and Vaempires Revolution, so it really jogs your memory if you need it. Personally I didn't need it as I had enjoyed and remembered the books clearly. Having said that I think it is a great idea and wish other authors did the same in their book series. Once the recap is over you kind of back track in the story a little and we see things and events from Linq and Ray's point of view. Then there story catches up to where we left the "events" and the stories become as one. We follow Linq and Ray whilst they fight their way to try and find Daniel and Princess Cassandra. we also have chapters from Princess Cassandra's point of view and her interactions with the newly turned and self appointed leader of the Vaempires, Vielyn. As we know Vielyn used to be friends with Linq, Ray and Daniel when he was a Vampire , but since he evolved into a Vaempire he has totally changed and only feels animosity towards his former friends.
Ray and Linq eventually find Daniel but they have yet to find and maybe "rescue" Princess Cassandra. I won't actually go any further into the plot as I want you all to discover for yourselves.
The book ends with yet more cliff hangers than you had at the start of the book, which is of course great as it makes you impatient for the next book!
So to sum up this book has friendship and love, sacrifice, lots of action, fighting, drama and blood and guts too. The only downside of the book I wanted even more, I didn't want it to end.
So did I enjoy the book? Yes, Would I recommend? Yes, though this one does have a little more blood and guts to it. Do I want to read more? Definitely! Please. Would I read other books by Thomas Winship? Oh Yes.

*This is a review of an ARC received from the author for an honest review.

Vaempres: Zombie Rising is a great continuation of book 1 of the Evolutionary War series, Vaempires: Revolution. In that book, we follow Daniel the newly appointed acting-leader of the Vampires kingdom after a worldwide revolt by the Vaempires. He’s racing across the city of Orion in search of his friends and Princess Cassandra. Zombie Rising takes on the less seen view-point of Daniel’s best friends Linq and Ray.

For a majority of this novella the reader follow alongside Linq and Ray as they make their way toward their friend’s Daniel and Cassie who were last known to be at the royal palace. Along the way there is a large amount of action while the two teenage vampires battle occasional Vaempires. This was a welcomed element carrying over from Book 1. I loved the action, the fast paced reading, and was pleased to know I could fly through this one and not want to put it down.

Aside from straight up action, this novella has some slower paced moments, as well. I didn’t mind them at all. When following Daniel, the almost non-stop action fit his character’s personality of always moving forward toward the goal. When reading about Linq and Ray, there’s a slightly different feel. There’s more planning involved. There’s also a little less rush to get to the Palace due to slight lack of urgency.

It was also great meeting up with Cassie again briefly. The reader is able to see just how much of a bad a** she is and how quick thinking she is. All of the characters in Winship’s books have been great to get to know, not just Cassie.

With the surprises that occurred at the ending of this novella, even if this sounds obvious from the 5 star rating, I can’t wait for the next installment. All I’ll allow myself to say about it is that I hope Thomas Winship is working on whatever title comes next….right now. I need to keep reading about the Evolutionary War.

Sorry this review was so long in coming. I wanted to finish reading the second book before commenting because I wanted to get a handle on how this series is playing out. What I mean by that is the way the series is written it seems to me more like a single novel in serial parts. I don't have a problem with that. I just wanted to be sure that was what was happening. So, I have combined my review and will copy it to both books.

With that said, I am patient and will wait for the next installments. I think the evolution of Vampires is a great theme and I am really liking this story so far.

A group of friends must face a revolutionary force of mutated Vampires, now known as Vaempires. The revolution is violent and they lose their families and become separated. I don't want to give away any spoilers so I will stop with saying that the first book is the story of two of them and the second is the story of the other two, all happening simultaneously.

I really like these books, so please, no one take my minor gripes as any sort of indication that I don't. I think the characters are described and portrayed as much older than they are said to be. They are much more mature than fifteen years. I don't know the purpose of this, as I think these books are a little bit too violent for the YA crowd, so I think the characters would have played okay if they were older.

The gore descriptions are a little too abundant for me. I think gore is great for shock value and graphic realism, but too many pages of gory descriptions in a row lose the shock value and become boring and tedious. I found myself skimming quickly ahead to get to more story and less gore. But, just know that the story is there and is very enjoyable.

I will be buying the rest of the series. I give The Evolutionary War series four stars.

So, I AM SOOOOOO EXCITED!!! This is what I guess you would call as Vaempires 1.5, as it’s a short story to tie in, after the end of book 1, but it’s from Linq and Ray’s side of things. They are trying desperately to reach Daniel and Cassie who are at the Castle of the King. As Cassie being the princess, she is high in demand by the bad guys. So this particular novel is high in action, which is just awesome! But, I was literally brought to tears. I learned about what happened to my Boyfriend Ray’s family. It’s heart wrenching. I’m glad Ray made it, as I haven’t been officially introduced to him to actually get him to be my book boyfriend yet, but the point of that is that is was so wonderfully well written, and it was just beautiful and sad and magnificent all at the same time. Well done Mr Tom for writing such awesomeness that I cried, smiled, cheered, laughed, screamed, cringed, and literally fell out of my seat on that last sentence! It takes a lot to get me that worked up, and you’ve done fantastic!

I can’t say too much, as the point of this story is to be a short story, but I need to say this. If you haven’t read Vaempires yet, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!! I am REALLY dying to know what’s gunna happen now that there has been that interesting little discovery by Ray and Linq, and I am seriously curious as to what’s going to happen with the bad guys. They REALLY REALLY need to be taught some manners. Mr. Tom, you constantly keep me on my feet! I cannot WAIT to see what you gimme next. And by that I mean I am begging you to hurry and gimme some more!

When the author told me the book was finished, I was quivering with excitement, because that’s how much Thomas Winship is good at writing and how amazing his series is. I started reading the book as soon as I received it, and running out of pages in a matter of hours! Now I just need to be patient and wait for the next instalment . . . What? I-am-dying-here!

This book is different from the first one and the prelude, it’s mostly focused on two characters we previously met, Linq and Ray, and I couldn’t have been happier to know more about them. Their emotions and thoughts were so well elaborated and described that I could actually feel like they were real. But, I must say, I had a special connection with Linq and I even cried at some point (yes, Winship, I cried). How could I have controlled it when something so strongly emotional was on its way? But I loved it! I honestly loved every minute spent with those guys.

I don’t know how Thomas Winship managed to make me read about zombies and like them, but I’m terribly grateful. Instead of being disgusted by those creatures, I always find myself passionately excited to start a new Vaempires adventure, and I’m ready for the next one!

I received a free copy of this book from the Author for an honest review. This does not affect in any way my opinion of the book nor the content of my revieworiginally posted on Darkest Sins.

Cassie is locked in an underground chamber by Daniel to keep her safe and I love how she orders Linq to open the door to let her out.  While Cassie's only makes a brief apperence in Vaempires: Zombie Rising she certainly makes sure its one that stay firmly in your mind.
Linq and ray are my two favourite characters, they are an amazing fighting team that are three for each other all the time. They have some serious skills and some amazing weaponry and a great sense of comic timing.

“They’re zombies. Dead people brought back to life. They were all the rage back in pre-Devastation times.”
“And how does that help us?”
“It doesn't,” Ray quipped. “I'm just making conversation to pass the time.”

Getting to see the friendship Linq and Ray have was a vast difference to all the violence and war going on around them.  Never letting anything get in their way and even when it seemed like all was lost they fought right to the very end, for each other and for what they stand for.

Vaempires: Zombie Rising was a quick read but packed full of action, gory fighting scenes and zombies that kept me hooked from the moment I began, right to the last word.  The ending however is a different matter, how can it just end like that!!!!! I really need to know what happens and its going to feel like an everlasting wait to find out what happens next.

Ok, this is going to be a very long review, composed by just three letters: WTF??? Seriously, Mr Winship, what the hell! I think I've never been more anxious in my life than with reading this book. Ok, Vaempires Revolution ended in a kinda shocking way, but this goes beyond that.
We've got two different situations: one with Linq and Ray, and one with Cassie. Of course, the events are very serious and you find yourself fearing for the life of everyone. Everything is so emotional and intense that your eyes are stuck to each word and your breaths have become shallow, and sometimes you even realize you've been holding your breath. This is the effect the story has on you.
Now, I'd like to talk about the reason why I started my review the way I did. I assume by now you all know New Moon (the movie) too well, right? If you are familiar with it, you also know how it ended. Bella's reaction is EXACTLY the same one I had. Just change "Marry me, Bella" with the last sentence in the book and you'll know what I mean. I turned the page to keep going and all I found was the author bio. I was like: "Ok, where's the rest of the book? Give it to me. NOW."
I really can't wait to read the next instalment, it's a torture!

The latest installment in the Vaempires series doesn't disappoint. Following Linq and Ray through the decimated city of Orion, this book happens almost simultaneously with the events in Vaempires: Revolution. The different perspective is fresh, and Linq's POV engaged me much more than Daniel's, the hero of the first two books in this action-packed series.

Linq's a genius and Ray's a well-trained warrior, but even they may not be any match for the strange Vaempires that threaten the world, especially when it becomes clear that the Vaempires just won't stay dead. Overlaying the story of the two friends are gruesome snapshots of the fate of the spunky princess, Cassandra.

Winship has built a world of action, terror, and intrigue, and I can't wait to find out what happens next! Be warned: this series is not for the squeamish or the faint of heart, but the heroes are flawed, the villains are chilling, and the futuristic view of our world is properly horrifying. A great, quick read!

So Thomas Winship knows how to write! This series is so not my typical read. First of all, it has a bunch of gore, but I don't seem to mind because he's written his characters so well, I need to make sure they don't get eaten, blown up, turned into crazy zombies, or a number of other unsavory things.

This series has been a pleasant surprise for me. It's full of action, in fact, good luck catching your breath once you start reading! I totally loved Ray and Linque in this book. They were great friends and didn't give up even when they probably should have.

Loved the ending to this one! Now I have to see what happens next. I'm anxiously awaiting the next in the series. The characters are all well developed and all have an integral part to play in the story.

Great book, Tom! Loved it :)

Winship has turned brutality and gore into an art form.

I appreciate the matter-of-fact way the vampire teens describe the havoc around them (opposed to gore for shock value.) They sound shell-shocked, which comes across realistic enough to give me the chills.

Linq and Ray are instantly likeable. I was especially happy to be reunited with Cassie. Let me just say, Cassandra kicks ass!

I feel like I’m inside a movie when I’m reading Vaempires.

The one thing I found abrupt was the ending…at 77% in. Bad boy, Tom! Better get the next installment out soon. ;)

Winship keeps it real, which at times feels quite cruel, but that’s also what keeps me on the edge of my seat, gripping my Kindle.

What can I say? Winship delivers again! This one is action packed and a cool look at the end of Vaempires: Revolution from a different POV.

Ray and Linq are great characters. Its so nice to get to know their part of the story.

I love Cassie. She's the kind of girl I love to read about.

This story is all action and Winship does a great job describing the fight scenes while capturing the thoughts and emotions of the characters that are fighting. The scenes feel like they are straight out of a Jason Statham movie--choreographed to perfection.

Can't wait to read the next one! I need it now!

This is the third book from the Vaempires series, and it doesn't disappoint. This author does well with action. And what better way to show that than with a zombie uprising. If you're looking for something new out of the vampire genre, then look no further. Mutated vampires that just keep going... what else is there to say?

The Story starts within Vaempires: The Evolutionary War. I really liked reading what was happening with Linq and Ray at the different points in the story. In the first book, it was Daniel and Cassie’s heads through which we saw the world. Now don’t get me wrong, I quite enjoyed it that way, but it was a nice change and I think it added more depth to be in Linq’s mind (a refresher comes later when we get to cross back to Cassie’s any way).

My only qualm with this fast paced and exciting book is that it ended. It leaves us reeling with desire to find out what happens next. Please Mr Winship tell me that the final instalment will be out soon or at least another novella side story or prequel to tide me over.

Zombie Rising is a fast-paced, action-packed thrill ride that tells a new side of this series’ story. It’s a tad gory and not for the sensitive readers out there, but those who enjoy fight scenes and strong characters should love anything in the Vaempires series.
