The Mexican Cinema of Darkness: A Critical Study of Six Landmark Horror and Exploitation Films, 1969-1988

Rate this book
Following the national and international upheaval and tragedy in 1968, Mexican "trash cinema" began to shift away from the masked wrester genre and towards darker, more explicit films, and disturbing visions of the modern films which can be called "avant-exploitation." This work covers six of those El Topo , Mansion of Madness , Alucarda , Guyana , Crime of the Century , Birds of Prey , and Santa Sangre .

An overview of six Mexican art/exploitation films of varying quality. I don’t quite agree with his takes on the René Cardona Jr films, but this is still a valuable book for those interested in this admittedly niche genre.

A perfect academic book about mexican contra cultural cinema in the 70's, it helped me a lot for some history paper i had to handle about mexican cinema.
What i like the most is that it has movies not regular mexican cinema books talk about, like Jodorowsky's work and Juan López Moctezuma's awesome movies.
