The Black Panther: Intercommunal News Service, 1967-1980

Rate this book
"We knew from the beginning how critical it was to have our own publication, to set forth our agenda for freedom...to urge change, to use the pen alongside the sword," writes David Hilliard in the preface to this stunning collection of pages from the original groundbreaking editions of the Black Panther Party's official news organ and original essays by Hilliard, Elaine Brown, Dr. Stan Oden, Craig Laurence Rice, Kumasi, and Joshua Bloom.

First called The Black Panther Community News Service and then The Black Panther Intercommunal News Service (BPINS), the weekly periodical was nationally and internationally distributed. It was "sold in small stores in black communities, through subscriptions, and, mostly, on the streets by dedicated Party members," writes Brown, a party leader and author of A Taste of Power, in this edition.

In its heyday, the Party sold several hundred thousand copies of the newspaper per week and was highly regarded for the quality of its content by media professionals and its legion of readers alike. It ultimately became the most influential independent black newspaper in the United States, known not only for its fearless reportage and analysis but its stunning photographs and illustrations, including provocative and humorous political cartoons.

Published in time to mark the 40th anniversary of the BPINS, this book is, at once, an invaluable document of a little-known aspect of American history and a celebration of one of the most stunning accomplishments of a cultural and political movement that changed the nation. The original DVD, included in the back of the book, makes this a multimedia package that readers across generations can appreciate, documenting events and leaders of the past who still resonate and influence culture and politics today.

Reprints the old BPP Newspapers. Beautiful Layout and Art. Fascinating to read what was written at the time.

An incredible collection of prints from the Black Panther Party Intercommunal News Service that existed from 1967-1980. I was astounded to learn that the INS put out newspapers equalling to over 12,000 pages!! So 12,000 pages of Black Panther Party ideology. Incredible.

Of course you don't get all of that here, but this is an incredibly-detailed outline of some of the most important events that occurred in the history of the BPP, as well as some of the lesser-known events; if you really want a concrete example of how deep in the Black community the BPP ran, how dedicated they were to the struggle for Communism and liberation, you'll want to get your hands on this. It is compiled by David Hilliard, one of the most militant members of the BPP in its time.

This was a pretty interesting look at the Black Panther Party through the lens of its newspaper. What was true then, doesn't seem to have changed much today. As an independent journalist, I really appreciated looking through excerpts of the paper. One of my complaints with this book was that only a few pages of specific editions of the paper were published. I'd be reading a pretty interesting article written by someone in the party, turn the page, and--boom--a new
edition. My second beef is not with the book, but rather that because I bought it used, the cd-rom with all the papers and relevant information to make the book complete was missing. If anyone has it and is willing to make a copy for me, i would be more than willing to pay for shipping and handling! It did put a strain on my eyes that the font was so small. But it was great nonetheless. Beautiful images, great photos, in-depth articles, and a platform for people to express themselves rather than be filtered by the corporate (white) media.
