This book is in the Children's section of my library. Though the text might be made a bit more sensitive for children to read, there's a lot to learn, plus the illustrations are beautiful.
Another one of the saints' books for children from my local library, Saints and Angels gathers medieval/Renaissance art and iconography alongside stories of saints and their religious snapshots (feast day, patronages, and occasionally, attributes). Sometimes the writing is a little dry. "He was a fascinating man," the author says of Mark the evangelist. In a one-page summary written for children, statements like that are a waste of space. I liked how each spread looked different, with a full-page work of art or a detail/cutout in the text. There were small borders on each page that didn't repeat through the whole book (except on page spreads with one saint on each page, for continuity). Small readers are sure to notice and delight in those small details. When included, the attributes are replicated in a sepia tone, providing continuity though it looks like they were lifted from different media (woodcuts, illuminations, et c.). A glossary of unfamiliar words is included at the end, which is very helpful. This is a good introduction to saints (and a few select angels), and will be helpful as a reference, too.
This is probably made for kids but it’s a really exceptional overview and gives you just the right amount of information to decide who you want to research further
I enjoyed reading about saints/angels - although some did suffer horrendous martyr deaths. The stories are uplifting and set an example of determination at a time when Christianity was forbidden. The book covers the Holy Family, the Followers of Christ, the Gospel Writers, Martyrs, Great Thinkers and Evangelists, saints associated with Peace and Healing, and angels and archangels. The illustrations consist of reproductions of wonderful paintings and icons. I'd recommend this to anyone interested in finding out about these Christian figures.
A great introduction on who some of the angels and saints are, unfortunately doesn't cover all of the angels nor all of the saints. I wanted to read more about Raphael but only read about Tobit in his part and that's all.
Some of the more well-known Saints are in this book, but it's interesting reading about their lives. The book also had more Saints than it did angels, but it was a nice read nonetheless.
