Author of PNR and Erotic Romance. Published with Pink Petal Books, Ellora's Cave, and my Self-pub the Koning Clan Series. I love chocolate, reading, and traveling. Some of my favorite authors are, Cole, Kenyon, Ward, and Laurenston. I'd love to get to know you.

I grew up in the Colorado Mountains a place full of possibilities. I never found what truly made me happy until I discovered writing. I didn't really like to read until I tried something a little different. Then like a wildfire my passion grew into a career. I'm thankful every day to have found where I belong.

Transforming Love is basically, in house building terms, a frame without a foundation. The basic Paranormal Romance steps are here, but it feels like nothing is expanded on. After the last page turned—even while reading—the characters were instantly forgotten.

The sex scenes, definitely have potential. The romance wasn't fleshed out enough that the full affect of—what is clearly a great romantic concept—the courtship left me empty. The female lead (see still can't come up with names) was solid and I admired that she wanted to do things her way. The male leads acceptance and eventual sacrifice was amazing and I felt so bummed that I couldn't truly enjoy it.

The story feels like a rough draft. There needs to be more effort put in. It feels like I was reading a standard fanfic, an ode to the paranormal romance genre. There's clearly a lot of love for the work here. To be a true story there needs to be sheetrock, paint, wiring, and a lot of other things to make it a home to paranormal romance readers. Right now those wooden beams are mighty shaky.

Sexual Content: Standard PNR lov’in.

1/5- I couldn't finish it or wish I hadn't

Kindle tells me I purchased this story on May 31, 2013. 65 pages, and I somehow never managed to read it in over 11 years. It has just been floating around in my Kindle cloud that whole time. Having read it now, I kind of feel like it could have stayed there unattended for another 11 years. Yeah, it's not very good. It starts out OK but very quickly goes downhill. All of the characters are cliched, the villainous ones especially, and it reads like a rushed, sloppy outline rather than a smooth story.

I was sucked in to this story almost immediately! It packed quite a wallop of a punch for a short read. It was a satisfying, fun, funny, exciting, sensual and magical story that had me gripping my ereader tightly at many points in suspense. Every alpha shifter or paranormal lover will have fun with this quick and sexy read :)

Jenny just desires to be free, free to travel, free to just be. When she finally gets the opportunity to do so fate has other ideas. Stuck in the middle of nowhere because her car broke down, she just makes the best of it and moves forward, unknowing of where the road will lead or even where she is! Finally at a destination, of sorts, she enters a place that is full of all male patrons. Not quite comfortable, but having no other choice she braves it all and asks for help only to find she’s in the place her family has been avoiding her even knowing about her entire life. Walking through that door and meeting Gryph changes EVERYTHING for Jenny.

Gryph is an extreme alpha male and not just figuratively speaking, very good looking and he’s alpha of the Koning Clan. He’s ready to fight in the Slag (an event that the winner gets the prize) and gain what is his. But many obstacles stand in his way. One of them being the one he wants for his mate, Jenny.

Many secrets kept and finally revealed, truths finally told and surprises that will stun you to pause. The two main characters will have you chuckling at their antics and refusals of admission. Both go through immense changes by the end which led to a very satisfying ending.

There was a lot of potential for this story. A great premise but the follow through was weak. There are a lot of things that I liked about the story but with the follow through falling flat it was a bit disappointing.

It started off very intriguing and I was looking forward to reading the story. As I read on, I realized there was something missing.

Overall I felt like there were huge pieces of the story missing. It jumped from one thing to another. I have plans to read the second one and I'm hoping that since it's longer than this one, it will not be missing the pieces needed to make it a good story.

I really enjoyed this book and for a short story it was written well. It had everything a good shifter book usually contains. There was great sex and very likeable characters as well. I could see this becoming an awesome series, especially if we could meet more clan members and have them fall in love too! I just think that this book has so much potential to make it in to a full size novel. This is going on my keeper shelf and I will be sure to pull it out again to have a great read!

This Review was first published on my blog Lecture toute une Aventure

My opinion:
I have been quite surprised I admit, now I did read the first chapter on Debra’s website and I knew that I liked it, even if the first chapter of book two was my favourite, but I didn’t expect it to be so hot!... it’s even a euphemism, this is a novella that introduce us to her universe of shifters so a short read but full of more than steamy scenes. It’s really an erotic paranormal romance when I expected more a simple though a little steamy paranormal romance. “Transforming Love” really took me by surprise since those scenes arrive already in chapter two, but that one is really soft comparing to the rest, the first chapter didn’t let me expect anything like that.

The story is really fast paced so the novella is complete, no cliffhanger at all but perhaps a little too fast at some parts, I would have loved more. Now it’s not that the plot is not there or uninteresting but sometimes the erotic part takes over in a detrimental way, the balance isn’t mastered yet.
The universe is there, they are shifters in our world but are they living with us or in a scheduled part we don’t know. We don’t know exactly how things are done except that they are a special clan whose female have a special powers, for the rest you have different kinds of shifters clan: wolves, hyenas, jaguars to cite a few each clan has an alpha and all of them are rules by a queen and a king. I was left hanging for some info on the characters but if we get some about Jenny, like her mother is dead and if she ignore all about the shifters it’s because her father tried to save her from her destiny and suppressed her powers thanks to a trinket. … not a lot true but in the circumstances pertained to how she was raised it’s understandable, she knows nearly nothing so we don’t but I would have liked to know for example if they left when her mother was alive or after and how she died but Debra perhaps has plan to answer that in a future novella or a later books. So we discover Jenny as the shifters community discover her, a determined young woman who speaks her mind and dare to oppose males.

If for Jenny we have learned enough, I was disappointed with Gryph though, he is the leader of his clan and owner of a bar…that’s it. We can guess that Clint is his beta or second in command but it’s not really confirmed in this book so I would have loved more descriptions, more information. He is still a mystery in fact ( to be honest I got more on him reading the first chapter of book 2 than in the whole first book). I want to learn more about all the characters, their personality, how they come to be what they are etc.
The main idea though was something I really appreciate.

So in the end I only liked the book but I sincerely think it will only get better with each new book in the series, from what I have seen so you really could give it a try if you love really hot and steamy read, paranormal romance.
It’s only a introduction ( it would have been a really promising book if longer) and the author is improving so I can’t wait to receive my copy of book two “Escaping Love” to share my opinion with you and to learn more about the characters as well as discovering new ones (really read the first chapter and you will understand how excited I can be, you can see the improvement too)

A quick read with a bit of heat and at least once beefy shifter dude. For the most part this book follows a common plotline of males having to compete to win the right to mate with a very eligible and desirable young female, but it does put in a few quirks of its own.

Jenifer has grown up fairly sheltered by her father, and has no idea of what she is or that she's special even among her kind. She isn't dissatisfied with her life, but like many 20 year olds, she want to see something of the world beyond her own little town and have a little taste of adventure before she settles down to life on her father's ranch. So she sets out for the coast, wanting to see the ocean, but her car breaks down stranding her out in the middle of nowhere and setting her up to begin an even wilder adventure than she'd anticipated. While understandably naive about a lot of things given her youth and relatively sheltered life, she is quite intelligent and courageous, not hesitating to stand up for herself against Gryph and the others despite how much they frighten or intimidate her. She's no mild miss to sit back and do as she's told and wait for her fate to be decided for her, but rather she's one to jump right into the fray and fight for what she wants.

Gryph initially comes off as being very gruff, and more than a little unfriendly, but he shows a softer side farily quickly as well. Unfortunalely we never get to learn all that much about him as a person aside from a sort of standard sensitive alpha-male persona. He decides almost immediately that Jenifer is his, regardless of what tradition or anyone else might think, including at first, Jenifer. We do learn that he's the head of his clan, or the heir to it at least (that part was a bit unclear to me), but we never really learn what all exactly that entails for him. There's the sense from what we do see of his personality that he's a firm but fair leader, but it would have been nice to see him interacting with his own people a bit more as well as just with Jenifer and his housekeeper.

Overall I enjoyed this book, though I did find it a bit disjointed as the action often skips right from one thing to another with very little transition or explanation. Not so badly that you can't understand what is going on, for there is enough basic explanation provided at all points to allow you to follow the story easily, but the relationships especially seem to develop with little reason behind them. For instance, while there is obviously immediate and intense chemistry between Jenifer and Gryph, they go from simply being in lust to being ready-to-die-for-you in love with one another seemingly overnight with very little buildup or getting-to-know-you involved. Yes, much of it can be explained via the concept of destined mates, which I'm sure is what is intended to be involved here for them, but I still would have liked to have seen a bit more progression to their relationship besides going straight from "you're hot and I want to do you" to "I love you so much and I'm willing to die for you".

In summary, I'd say this book is a nice way to kill a few hours, and it won't take you much longer than that to read it. It's quick, it's simple, and there's a few smoking hot sex scenes along the way to keep it interesting. Anyone into shifters will probably want to check this one out.

Potential yet shortcomings in storyline & writing

★½ (rounded up to account for my personal quirks)

Note: Due to my reading experience, I actually double-checked with the author to confirm that I had received the final, released version. This review is based on that confirmation. In addition, although I read this novelette prior to Escaping Love (book #2 in the series), I wrote the review for book #2 first. Due to similar thoughts and issues, this review is a more condensed version of that for book #2.

THE SHORT: I would hesitate to recommend TRANSFORMING LOVE in its current state. The bones of a good story exist but require a lot more “meat” by way of stronger world-building and more attention to the MCs’ backstories and characterisations. Based on my reading background, I would classify this as NA/“erotica-lite”.

THE LONG: For me, TRANSFORMING LOVE seemed to hit certain common PNR themes without much development. So in the end, I only sensed a superficial patina of paranormal over a rather quick romance with a few sex scenes. Lack of in-depth world-building wouldn’t matter much for a quick standalone PNR read. But as the first book in a new PNR series, TRANSFORMING LOVE would work better if it established a firmer foundation re: the world of the Koning Clan.

Kept ignorant of her shifter heritage “for her own protection” (why, I’m still not sure, other than to have a “normal” life and avoid tradition), Jenny is astonished to learn that she is the last female of Clan Koning, a royal bloodline. So by Clan tradition, the winner of the Slag gets to claim her as mate by her 21st birthday. And apparently, her charm bracelet/anklet had been spelled (by whom?) to prevent her from shifting.

Instead of using the window provided by Jenny’s discovery of her family’s secret to add some backstory and world-building (e.g., what drove Jenny’s father to “hide” her, how populous the shifter clans were, or even how different shifters in the same local area were organized), the story continued on and introduced a few Slag contenders, the requisite “villain” (read: cause of testosterone skirmishes) and ultimate resolution.

As for the romance portion… Well, the instant attraction and awareness between Jenny and Gryph had all the hallmarks of “fated mates”. One kiss and Gryph declares “mine!” with “authority, leaving no room for denial”. Not surprisingly, Jenny disagrees, intent on keeping her freedom. Nonetheless, the sexual heat simmering between them can’t be denied and due to the novelette length, their relationship hits hyperspeed. The ending (which reminded me of a different PNR book) was rather abrupt and more an HFN.

Overall, there were promising glimpses of Ms. Smith’s creative writing ability. So it’s a shame that this version of TRANSFORMING LOVE read more like a working draft, with a rushed storyline and too many instances of word misuse, incorrect sentence and paragraph structure, and edit/proof errors. I truly hope that, at some point, Ms. Smith will consider taking another look at this book and “beefing it up” so that it can become a solid starter to her series.

Wow what a hot read! This story is only 65 pages (on my ipad) but it is full of action, sexual tention and lots of hot scenes! So this makes it the perfect for when you're in the mood for a scorching hot shifter read!

For a book with this amount of pages the world building is excellent, not to rushed at all and enough key characters that you can foresee getting their own hot story. Debra Smith has written an excellent and captuating story that leaves you wanting more.

The characters have a lot of depth, I specially liked the main character Jenny, The heroine! She is a lost shifter female among males who are trying to win her hand in marriage. She is feisty, brave and knows how to fight for herself. Gryph is an alpha male as big as you can read about them, he is very possessive, sexy and don't forget dominating. We al love a He-man Alpha who let his woman knows what he wants :) I was so in to the relation between Jenny and Gryph that I couldn't put this book down. I really had to finish it!

I recommended Transforming Love by Debra Smith for all erotic shifter lovers who like their Alpha as a REAL Alpha! I will look forward to read more by Debra Smith!

Beware, very graphic with lots of hot scens!!

I liked this book.

Is hard to find something that I like to read better than a shifter story, this one did not disappoint me at all. I was really caught in this fast-paced short-story. But, at the end of the day, I'm a full book kind of girl and I had problems with all the information missing from this read. I wanted to know so much more about the characters and their world really, I ended the book with lots of doubts and unanswered questions and that's why I did not rated this book higher.

Jenny left home for a look at paradise, she just want to see the beach once! Her crappy car, has a flat tire in the middle of nowhere and she has to walk almost 10 miles to find another human being. Somehow, she end up caught by a reality she does not understand.
Gryph is a wolf and does not believe in fairy mothers, but somehow destiny has given him a gift. Now he only has to win the games, for him to keep his present forever.

I loved the promise of this book and I will definitely read the next of the series.

Transforming love is the 2D version of some of the hotter shifter erotic tales available.

The characters are flat (except for in the loins area!!) and the story jumps from one scene to another in the blink of an eye. Add to that, that characters seem to just drop into and out of the story as required and no further dimension is added.

This book solely is focused on the sexy stuff, and I don't think thats a bad thing. The sex scenes are quite primal and base, but natural. All dark Dominating Alpha extending his ownership over young, naive Jenifer. Jenifer, who usually flaps around like a twit, yet somehow makes life altering decisions after reading an old book for two minutes.

This book needs more. More character building, more world building, more scene construction, and more storyline. Just more.

A few things I noticed:

29% - ...could hand and(delete the d) overbearing male.
46% - marring (marrying)
76% - we're done for (to)day,
93% - ...our tub."." (Double punctuation)

There was a lot that I liked about this book. Gryph, in particular. I was intrigued with the idea of the competition (although as a Brit, the word 'Slag' has a somewhat different meaning...LOL), and I was intrigued by the premise of Jenny being the 'prize' for the winner.

My big grumble though, was that everything seemed a bit rushed. I never got to know Jenny or Gryph, or any of the excellent secondary characters (Charlie, Jenny's father, Kane).

The details of the competition itself were hazy, and I felt that Debra could have spent more time explaining how it would work and building up the tension even further.

The sex scenes were hot, and she has a clear style of writing that sucked me straight in. I'd like to give this 3 and a half stars, but GR doesn't allow halves :-(

Overall, it was a great introduction to a possible series.

Tranforming Love is a quick, intensely sexual ride. Perfect for when you're in the mood for a scorching hot shifter read with just the right amount of intrigue to keep you interested and enough action to satisfy your inner adrenaline junky.

My only complaint would be that, like many shorter novellas, I didn't quite get the depth from the characters that I'm always hoping for. BUT I was so caught up in the potential relationship between Jenny and Gryph that I couldn't put it down. In fact, I think Gryph's character was what kept me so excited. The guy is a Grade-A Alpha who holds no punches. He knows what he wants and will risk everything for the woman he loves. Just my kind of guy ;)
Recommended for shifter lovers who like 'em Alpha!

Enjoyed this read! Great short read. This would've made a great full-length novel. The story line is a good one but because it's so short, the author isn't able to elaborate/expand on some things that could be more explained and allow for more background could be given. The characters are great! You don't get to build a great connection to the them since it's so short but still, they're great. Easy to read, flows well... great sex scenes. I'd definitely recommend for those looking for a quick, hot read.

go this book as an amazon freebie, preparing for a short (65 pages!) story with sex and minimal plot, most likely I'll still enjoy it though :)

Update: lost my original update to internet connection, so here is a shorter version. Loved this story! still think the plot is minimal, but its very good, solid plot, simple instead of repeating plot points, and the sex doesn't go on for pages (unlike some books, lol) very refreshing, and I will be reading more stuff from Debra Smith.

I really felt this book was from someone who needed to work on her writing skills.

I love fantasy, so I'm willing to suspend a lot of disbelief, but this work asked too much and gave too little. I didn't care about the characters or the plot. It made no sense why the heroine was even going along with any of this.

I will admit the main reason I started this book was the cover (nice marketing btw). And for a short book it was packed with information. I am currently reading the second book which is much more laid out and detailed... which leads me to wonder, why wasn't this book more?

Lead male Gryph was seriously hot and I wanted to fall for him...bad. But everything was just so rushed.

I really enjoyed the characters, the author accomplishes a great deal of plot in a short time. My only complaint was that I wanted a longer story, but alas it was a short :)Short, sweet, sexy read. Totally worth it looking forward to reading the series.
