Because her brother works at the prestigious St. Lunatic High School, Niko Kanzaki, a poor student, attends night school there, but her classmates are all demons and she has a hard time adjusting until the handsome Ren offers to help.
If I could have at least attended Day Classes instead of at night... ...I might have been able to deal with this better.
Niko's brother Atchan passed his teaching exam, and has landed a teaching job (complete with FREE HOUSING!) at the prestigious, exclusive academy, St. Lunatic High. Which is great timing, because they're destitute and desperate! Niko can't wait to start school! ...until she learns that she can only attend the Night Class, which is filled with demons who love to torment her!
St. Lunatic High School has a great premise and a super eye-catching artstyle, reminiscent of a cartoonier Soul Eater, and was classified by TokyoPOP as "Comedy/Horror." With this classification in mind, a lot of people in the mid 2000s picked up this two-volume debut manga and were probably disappointed if they were expecting a scary or even slightly spooky manga. Because St. Lunatic is not scary. (Well, maybe if you're a very, very small child, but I wouldn't recommend it due to very mild language/violence, and we're talking super mild).
Chapters are episodic goofy adventures that are basically standalones, with Niko slowly learning more about her mysterious classmate Ren, the only other "humanoid" looking character. There is really nothing to be afraid of, no real tension, it's just definitely more of a silly time for young readers.
If you want a cute, Halloween-y sort of vibe that won't offer anything new or groundbreaking (and only has two volumes, so don't expect a grand over-arching plot), but is still a fun little ride, I'd say waste an hour or two giving it a read! Or, I'd recommend it for any kids (10 and up?) getting into manga?
★★★☆☆ 3/5. If you're looking for Soul Eater this is not it, but it's cute and fun, if not a little bland plot wise. (But that art, wow!)
I guess I was expecting something else. There was no explanation for why demons thought it beneficial to take classes at a human school at night, taught by a human boy. The heroine, Niko, honestly was a little whiny and annoying. Thank goodness Ren, the love interest, isn't an asshole and is really kind and considerate.
The "plot" moved around too much and felt loosely resolved. The older characters were drawn like children and acted like deranged people who shouldn't be working at all. For instance, in one chapter Niko eats a mushroom that will slowly kill her as it grows from her body. The nurse freaks out and leaves her to the chairman, who is such an idiot and shouldn't be working either. Little things like this added up to a mountain of "cool idea but failed application" scenarios.
If you're looking for a quick read with no depth and a cute "romance" then pick it up at the library. Honestly not sure if it's worth your money right now but there's only 2 volumes so perhaps the sequel is better.
*I own all the manga I read/review and don't support scans.
Overall Rating: D+ Synopsis: Created by Majiko, St. Lunatic High School (also known as Yoru nimo Makezu) follows Niko Kanzaki and her brother Atchan. At the beginning of volume 1, we find them jumping out the window of their apartment because they are several months late on rent, and Atchan just got a job at the prestigious St. Lunatic High School. Niko is enrolled in night classes, which are full of demons. What wild hijinks will happen when you mix a human girl with a bunch of demon kids?
The answer, as far as I can tell, to my own question is inanity. I found little to like about the first volume of St. Lunatic High School, other than that the art is very cute (which is what drew me in initially). Beyond that, the plot seems weak and the characters haven't drawn me in. Some of the demon/human interaction is funny (the demons keep picking on and making fun of Niko because shes a human), but otherwise I just found myself bored.

Niko and her brother are so impoverished they jump at the chance of a teaching job, free room and board...and free classes at the prestigious St. Lunatic high school. Only things aren't as they seem, the house is dilapidated and on school grounds and the night school is a school for monsters...
I read this about 7 years ago, and since it was completely forgettable I decided to pick it up again and refresh my memory. I am so glad I did. This is such a silly and cute manga. The monsters are charming, the art is bold, and it's all over just pure fun. I smiled reading the entire time.
This is a shoujo manga, so there is a little bit of romance. And, there are monsters, but they don't come off as scary. You will probably enjoy this more if you're middle-grade/pre-teen age.
Yes, I picked this one up because of the sheer cuteness of the character designs. The Principal of the school is wearing cow pajamas on the back cover! Anyway, I got what I expected, human girl dumped into a wacky demon class where she is in the long, slow process of falling for one of her classmates. The story keeps alluding to some deep, dark secret coming up, but judging from what's going on now, I don't know how dark it could really get. I could be wrong. This is a just for fun title.
this story was really funny.I like it when ren-kun protected niko-chan from the nurse.I hope that can find a way of reading or finding the 2 book of st. lunatic high school cuz i like to know more of the new character and how far ren-kun and niko-chan's relation goes on.I hope that ren-kun and niko-chan will be a cute couple.=3
