Another *5* star book!!!

I first discovered this author when I was given the opportunity to read and review The Anniversary Waltz.

(you can read that review on my website)

I loved that book and I loved this one just as much, but for completely different reasons. This was a love story but there was so much action and suspense rolled in, I could not stop turning the pages. By the middle of the book, I found myself on a roller coaster ride that I never saw coming. Totally unexpected - and it worked beautifully with the plot.

The author created a "ripped from the headlines" story which touched on domestic abuse, bullying, shady business dealings, hit men and more. I was captivated from start to finish and so happy I took the time to read this book. This author is an amazing writer and if you haven't added him to your favorite authors yet - make sure you take time to do so. His books are effortless to read, and I find myself lost in the story the minute I begin reading. Another amazing book from Darrel Nelson!

First and foremost -- I won this book through the GoodReads First Reads program. And am so glad I did.

I ended up REALLY enjoying this book. The story, though a bit slow for the first chapter or two, did suck me in, and finally got me to the point where I really just did not want to put the book down. I spend a couple nights this week up later than I should have been as I wanted to finish "just one more chapter."

The story is about a pair of acquaintances-from-high-school reuniting well after that chapter of their lives has ended. Cassandra Todd, the popular cheerleader back-in-the-day, has spent her time since graduation in an unhappy marriage to the former high school football star who has turned physically abusive toward her. Turner Caldwell, who used to be tormented by Cassandra's then-boyfriend as the school's social outcast, has found his place in the world working as a handyman for a motel and attending classes at the local community college. They reconnect when Cassandra, on the run from her husband after realizing the threat of abuse toward their son, stops at the motel where Turner works. However, just escaping the house she shared with her husband won't be enough to free Cassandra from her husband's attacks and abuse -- he and his thugs have tracked her to the motel. She ultimately turns to Turner to aid her in escape and hiding. They retreat to the secluded cabin owned by a friend of a friend of a friend, where ultimately Turner's skills and experiences from a camp he worked at as a youth help them to remain hidden and escape when the thugs track them there, too. A romance also begins to blossom as the three -- Cassandra, her son, and Turner -- work together in hiding and behave as a traditionally happy family might.

I thought the story was told well. The characters are well-created and believable; the struggles they face, the same. Again, Cassandra Todd is put in this position when, fearing for her son's life, she decides to try to escape from her abusive home. In her encounters with other women on their journey with pasts or knowledge of domestic violence, some of the realities of victims of domestic abuse are laid bare and help to explain why Cassandra is adamant, at least at first, about not going to the police. Though the characters may, from a bare description, seem quite stereotypical (I can imagine the eye-rolling at the mention of the former cheerleader who after graduation married the high school football star), they do suck you in to their story and make you care about what happens to them. Even when the plot felt like it was about to take predictable turns (such as the end), the author manages to change it up, again incorporating some of the realities of domestic abuse and its consequences. I also liked the knowledge that Turner had of the outdoors and the way his character used it as necessary without being a show-off or know-it-all; rather, it is sprinkled throughout, which makes the times that it is utilized in an extreme situation believable rather than "convenient."

To reiterate, I really enjoyed the book, and on a final note, was frankly surprised when, after having gotten past the halfway point of the story, I glanced at the back cover and noticed that it was classified as "Christian Fiction." If you've read my summary above, you probably wouldn't have guessed -- and neither would I until the very end. And even then, it would have been a fleeting thought. The story never hits you over the head too directly with Christian messages, and most of the religious tones of the story -- where they come through -- are references to God, which is/can be more ambiguous. Cassandra and Turner do have a conversation at one point in their adventure where she reveals she is a believer, and Turner claims not to be; there are no extensive conversations, though; no animosity over this difference; no extreme conversion attempts. Simply two people handling a difference in views respectfully, which is part of why it doesn't hugely play in the bulk of the plot (though, I'll admit, it does play a role in just a few of the later points of the plot and as the story winds down).

I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in a story that includes the excitement of a care chase, the experiences of a secluded existence in the woods, the redemption of a high-school outcast, the trials of domestic abuse victims, or a budding romance. Or, really, anyone who likes a good bit of fiction. You will get all if you pick this up.

Turner Caldwell remembers all too well the living hell high school was for him. He also remembers one cheerleader, Cassandra, who didn't seem like the rest; sympathetic to his plight, but too afraid to reach out and help him. He thought he had put his past and bitterness behind him, but when she shows up unexpectedly with her 4-year-old son, Justin, Turner's life takes an completely unexpected turn.

When Cassandra's husband turns out to be someone from Turner's past, he is at loss for what to do with the two fugitives at his door. If he shelters them, they may very well be able to escape the men that are hunting them. If he turns them away, either mother or child might end up dead. Does he have the courage he needs to save two innocent lives from the clutches of a man who has no regard for anyone but himself?

This book literally had me sweating it out. I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep, all because I simply had to know what was going to happen next. It was a hostage situation in the form of a novel, and I was the victim. Nelson paints a story so harrowing you will find yourself trying to plan the next step alongside Turner. There were some excellent supporting characters in this novel, along with unforgettable lessons about life, love and faith. Don't let the cover scare you of, men - I promise this is a good one!

I'm being generous with three stars. This book was supposed to be a thriller of sorts. There were thrilling moments in the beginning and at the end, but the middle read more like a badly written romance novel. There were so many things that were just not "right" or believable. Taking aspirin for a badly sprained, possibly broken ankle is NOT going to take care of the pain. A house fire will not collapse in a matter of minutes, nor will it race across the ground and onto a pier burning it up, also in a matter of minutes. I'm a stickler for logical and realistic stories unless it's an actual fantasy novel.

The title of this book and the clothes on the woman on the cover completely threw me off. I was expecting some mid-1800s Christmas Carol-esque story. The story itself wasn't especially great for me either. Even the dramatic scenes were bogged down with too many thoughts and details. I did appreciate the author's grammar and vocabulary, but that's about all I can say for this one.

Turner Caldwell lives in Lakewood, Colorado and works as a handyman for a local motel and he is a college student. One day, a former high school classmate, Cassandra Todd arrived at the motel where he works. Cassandra was an attractive cheerleader in high school who Turner secretly liked. Turner Caldwell's childhood pain is tempting to resurface and he will have to deal with the past before he can attain a better future. Turner like most kids had to endure getting tormented by bullies in high school. The main bully, Brad Duncan tripped Turner in the cafeteria and caused Turner to do a face drive into his pancakes and syrup. Brad then gave him the nickname, Pancake Turner and the name stuck throughout high school. Turner felt so embarrassed by this incidence and he hated how everyone made fun of him and pitied him. All he wanted was acceptance and instead he was criticized. Cassandra Todd also saw the entire scene unfold.

Cassandra Todd is married to an abusive controlling husband, Brad. He worked in the construction industry and he built houses until in 2008, the economy crashed. Shortly after, Cassandra got pregnant with their first child, Justin. Brad slowly started changing and his tempter was getting out of control. Brad eventually started to get to rough and began pushing and shoving her, then it escalated to him hitting her and leaving bruises. Brad enjoyed being in charge and he checked their bank account regularly to keep an eye on his wife's spending. He lost his cool and pushed her when she bought a cheap outfit for their son. The bruises and the beating were getting worst and she said she was going to leave him. He instigated and threatened to have their son taken away from her. One of her biggest fears was that Brad was going to hurt Justin. Finally, she left him in the middle of the night with her son and arrived at the motel and reconnected with Turner.

Turner is torn in helping her and is struggling to deal and heal from the old wounds of bullying. Brad has hired two thugs to find his wife whereabouts and he is desperate to find their son. Turner stepped up to the plate and is determined to protect Cassandra and Justin. Will they make it out alive? Or will they be captured or worst killed?

I would recommend this suspense filled novel to anyone who is looking for a book that will capture your attention. As I was reading the book, I felt like I was living the country adventure alongside Turner, Cassandra, and Justin. Darrel Nelson did an excellence job at writing the chapters in thrilling details. I immensely loved the plot and storyline because it covered real life everyday problems that some people having to face tough things like spouse abuse and bullying. The book showed the importance of protecting our children from harm and I believe it can offer encouragement to people who are facing abuse and bullying right now. The book showed how the love of Christ can make an impact on someone's life. Cassandra believed in God and prayed with her son throughout the book. Turner had trouble praying to God when he still blamed God for letting his mother die from cancer. The book at times made me very upset and I wanted to jump in the novel and shield Justin and Cassandra from the physical and emotional abuse from Brad myself. The father and husband almost came out of me (and I'm not a dad or a husband yet) and it's hard for me to understand how someone could hurt an innocent child and their wife who they said their vows to. But I know it happens every single day. The book is raw and real for today's times and readers will be able to relate to the characters and the storyline. If you're looking for a new novel to read, then read this one! This is the best fiction novel, I have read in a while it kept me engaged and I didn't want the novel to end. I wish the author would make the novel into a series.

When Turner Caldwell left high school behind, he had hoped all the memories of being bullied went right along with them. Being the focus of many high school pranks, he couldn't wait to graduate and leave those times long behind him. Yet little did he know that those old memories would resurface in unexpected ways and literally right under his nose. When Cassandra Todd and her three-year-old son, Justin arrive in town, all those old feelings of his high school crush come rushing back. She was the ever popular cheer leader and it seemed like even then she didn't acknowledge him so why should today be any different.

Working as a handy man at the Mountain View Motel in Lakewood, Colorado and attending college pretty much occupied all his hours in a day. He had hoped one day to reap the benefits of working for Camp Kopawanee and helping troubled teens in a survival camp. Now supplementing his college classes in outdoor education and Psychology, he had hoped to one day make a difference unlike his former life in high school. Taking his ever present to do list from Harvey Jones, the owner of the motel, he found himself face to face with Cassandra in Room 21 to replace the door chain. What he doesn't expect to to find himself involved in helping Cassandra and Justin hide from her abusive husband, and one time high school bully, Brad Duncan.

When Cassandra leaves him in the middle of the night hoping to find a safe haven, she didn't think she'd run into Turner Caldwell, but she truly believes in the power of prayer and knows Turner is sent to her from God to help. But no matter how many times they try and avoid detection from Brad Duncan and his two thugs, they seem to be one step behind. Now that Turner's involved, Brad's out to make sure this time, Turner stays put even if it means killing him in the process. Will Turner be able to help Cassandra and Justin find peace or will Brad follow through with his threats and kill Cassandra and Turner and take back his son?

I received The Return of Cassandra Toddy by Darrel Nelson compliments of Realms Publishers and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. This is the second book written by Darrel that I have had the pleasure and true honor to review and I am so thrilled I did. His writing style immediately engages you from the prologue and even though you know how it might turn out, just being along for the action thrill ride is guaranteed to give you white knuckles turning pages and holding on to the book! I love how the survival training Turner has experienced in growing up, he is able to utilize when things go wrong and the threesome find themselves in a true survival situation in the mountains and no phone service. I absolutely LOVED how Darrel incorporates all this into this novel and kept me engaged until I turned the final page leaving me truly breathless. Well done, once again Darrel Nelson and I give this one a 5 out of 5 stars!! Can't wait for Following Rain coming soon!

"We're going on an adventure!" Cassandra told her four year old son, Justin. Such an understatement! When Cassandra left her abusive husband, Brad, he hired two men, apparently fully equipped with all the stereotypical gangland ways and means, appearances and mannerisms, to find her and bring her back to him...with the elusive white envelope.

While hiding in a motel in her home town she encountered Turner Caldwell. Even though she didn't recognize him from their high school days until later, she sensed she could entrust her life and that of her son's to this man.

What follows is an exciting adventure fraught with close calls, hair-raising escapes, numerous chase sequences, and a contest of wits in a wilderness setting. While the tale is told in the third person, most of the point of view is Turner's. The series of events gives the reader a fascinating view of Turner's transformation from motel handyman and college student to hero and courageous rescuer, from former high school dweeb and apparent nobody to hometown adventurer.

The author has skillfully painted his characters in vivid colors and endearing personalities, especially in his portrayal of Turner Caldwell who impresses the readers with his quick thinking, selflessness, easy wit, and wilderness survival knowledge. All during the nail-biting suspense in the final scenes, I couldn't help but hope for a satisfying resolution for Cassandra and Turner. In my mind, they already felt like a family.

I am a little disappointed that the romantic element of the story is so light; the reader is aware that the two main characters are attracted to each other. But since events happen in rapid succession, there is no time to explore those feelings. Instead, the reader is left to imagine that a courtship will eventually occur, after the dust settles, so to speak.

One element I really liked about the story was the realistic portrayal of Cassandra's relationship with God. The reader is aware from the beginning that she prays about her escape from Brad and that her encounter with Turner is apparently part of the answer to her prayers. She is not pushy or preachy about it, and Turner eventually moves from bitterness towards God to skepticism to openness about His intervention on their behalf as events unfold.

Overall, the author has created a well-balanced fast-paced adventure tale with light romantic elements and spirituality that I thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this combination of genres. It will be worth your time.

Darrell Nelson in his new book, “The Return of Cassandra Todd” published by Realms brings us into the lives of Turner Caldwell and Cassandra Todd .

From the back cover: When the popular girl whose friends bullied him in high school suddenly reenters his life, little son in tow, Turner Caldwell must put the past behind him if they are to survive.
Turner Caldwell works at a local motel as a handyman while attending college full-time. On his way to class one day, he is shocked to see Cassandra Todd and her young son in town. The sight of her brings back powerful memories of being bullied in high school—she was the popular head cheerleader and he the target of her friends’ mean-spirited pranks.

When Cassandra and her son check into the motel where he works and she asks for his help in eluding her abusive husband, he finds himself entangled in a dangerous drama that will require him to forgive and draw on every skill he has if they are to survive.

In the old movie serials they would give you story, get the hero in trouble, get him out of trouble, give you more story then get him in major trouble to end the serial that week with getting him out of trouble the following week. I found those serials to be very exciting and well done. “The Return of Cassandra Todd” reads like an old serial to me and it is very well done. Cassandra escapes her abusive husband, goes back to her home town and through circumstances meets Turner. Her husband sends men to bring her and the boy back and she needs Turner’s help to escape. Thus begins the thrilling, escalating adventure of them trying to escape from the clutches of her husband. Mr. Nelson in addition to giving us all this action also deals with spousal abuse and past bullying: those who bully and those who are bullied. To heal we need the help of God and Mr. Nelson shows us this in perfect fashion. And Mr. Nelson is not through yet he also gives us a romance. ”The Return of Cassandra Todd” delivers suspense, thrills, romance, mystery and excitement. I liked this book very much.

Cassandra Todd finds herself needing to leave her home in the middle of the night, her husband Brad is an abusive man, and while Cassandra was willing to take his beatings when he threatens to turn the abuse on their son Justin she knows it's time to leave. She heads to Lakewood, the town she grew up in hoping to cash in some bonds that her parents left her and then disappear When the bank transaction takes a bit longer than she anticipates she finds herself needing to spend a few days in town and checks into The Mountain View Motel. When hired men show up she finds herself needing the help of the motel handyman.
Turner Caldwell's high school years is something he has tried to put behind him. Bullied unmercifully by the jocks, especially Brad Duncan, who even gave him the nickname "Pancake." Turner always had a crush on Cassandra Todd, but she was one of the popular crowd, a cheerleader. After being gone for seven years Cassandra shows up with her young son Justin and stays a few nights at the motel where Turner works, causing those old feelings and emotions to bubble to the surface. When she shows up at his door and tells him that she is running from her husband, who just happens to be Brad Duncan, and needs his help Turner finds himself in the midst of something that could possibly change his life forever.

I found myself intrigued within the first few pages of this story. Cassandra finds herself needing to leave an abusive husband, and winds up going back to her home town. How ironic that the boy that was bullied in high school by her husband is the one she turns to for help. While I could empathize with Cassandra and her plight, I really felt for Turner and the memories that haunted him.I could understand why he was angry with God. In addition to the bullying he had experienced in high school, he had also lost a job he loved, his mother had died, and his father sort of abandoned him. Cassandra on the other hand held fast to her faith and felt like God was leading her.

The author tackles two pretty tough subjects within the pages of this story, spousal abuse and bullying. Cassandra was willing to accept the abuse for herself, but refused to allow her husband to abuse her son. I thought the author really shined when it came to showcasing just how bullying can haunt someone for years. Overall I found this to be a very fast paced story laced with suspense, drama, along with several inspirational, motivational messages as well. Recommended!

I absolutely devoured this book and finished it in one day! Darrel Nelson is a masterful storyteller and had me hooked me right from the beginning of the book. His characters and plot - filled with adventure and suspense - kept me engaged, committed and on the edge of my seat all the way through the last page.

This is the second book that I have read - and loved - from Darrel Nelson and I am thoroughly impressed with Nelson's range as an author. His first novel, "The Anniversary Waltz" was a sweet and tender love story, which he told beautifully. Although this book does have a love story woven through it, it also has adventure, suspense and he tackles some serious topics such as bullying, spousal abuse and religion. His two books are very different but both showcase his ability to develop great characters and tell a captivating story.

I really appreciate the way that Darrel Nelson addressed the more serious topics. I enjoyed how religion was used to develop the two main characters. In the book Turner uses his physical strength and knowledge to help rescue Cassandra. However, Turner doesn't realize that Cassandra's spiritual strength and faith will ultimately rescue him. I like how the attitudes toward religion showed a contrasting strength and weakness in Cassandra and Turner, respectively. I also feel it helped me connect with the characters and it provided an uplifting, hopeful message in the book.

The topics of bullying and spousal abuse were also handled very well. They were used to add depth to the characters by serving as a powerful vehicle to display the vulnerability of each character when in a position of weakness. However, it also showed each character's inner strength and ability to rise above, when in the face of adversity. I like that the topics were not glossed over - each portrayed the serious long-lasting and far-reaching effects of bullying and abuse - but the portrayal wasn't violent or dark.

Clearly, I loved this book and can't wait for Darrel Nelson's next book "Following Rain." I would highly recommend!

The Return of Cassandra Todd
By Darrel Nelson

Turner Caldwell's life is different than he thought it would be. He had worked at a Christian youth camp for troubled teens for four years until financial troubles closed the camp. Now Turner works as a handyman at Mountain View Motel and is going to college.

But when he sees Cassandra Todd walk into the local bank, he is transported back to high school and the tormenting that those in Cassandra's crowd inflicted on him. But when Cassandra and her son Justin check into the Mountain View Motel he is about to see that even what looks like a perfect life isn't always as it appears.

Cassandra is fleeing her abusive husband Brad, but when she is detained in Lakewood he comes looking for her. With men posted around the motel Turner is Cassandra's only hope of escape. With the help of Turner's employer - Loretta Jones they make their escape. But Brad is determined to get back what Cassandra took from him and no one is going to get in his way.

Cassandra doesn't trust many people anymore after all the man she thought she knew and loved has turned on her and has threatened their son. She refuses to go to the police because Brad will convince them she is the one with a problem. She remembers Turner and feels guilty about not speaking out against the bullying he was subjected to. But Turner isn't like she remembers him - he's funny, smart, and he cares about people as is evidenced in his interest in Justin.

When Brad's men find them where they are hiding their very lives are at stake. Can Cassandra's faith touch Turner's heart and the bitterness that has taken root over the years?

The Return of Cassandra Todd is as well written and engaging as Darrel Nelson's first book The Anniversary Waltz. You care for these characters and their struggles, you will be unable to put it down until you reach the end. Darrel doesn't disappoint in this his second book.

I received a copy of this book for the purpose of this review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Confessions of a book club enthusiast: I have to be honest, this book took me a few chapters to really get into. It's funny. I've been learning about something called counter-will. I hear about it at parenting classes. Lots of times, we can bring out our children's counter-will just by telling them to do something. It's like they feel the loss of choice and rebel against it. I find it in myself all the time. We are reading this book for book club. I find my counter-will rising almost every time I have to read a book for book club. I choose to be in book club, but somehow, that little loss of choice irks me every time. It was worse this time. We have a limited supply of this book, just 2 for 10 people. So we have to read it and share it as quickly as possible. That makes 2 marks against it. I have to read it fast, and I have to read it period. Honestly, I love book club, I love being apart of it. Talking about books that a bunch of other women have read and so have I, um yes, I'm there every time. It's just something I have to work out every month.

This book was actually really good, but I had to wrestle with myself to read it for the first 2 days I had in my possession. It felt like homework. Luckily, that feeling flew away when the action heated up. And heat up it did! Once this book got rolling, it was super fast-paced. But what I appreciated the most about this book was it's balance. This book had that in spades. Often, I find that an action-adventure/love-story will be rushed and won't feel real. This book really focused on what abuse does to a woman, what a traumatic experience can do to a child, and what it takes to recover from those things. I really appreciated that. It also didn't drag the book down, it buoyed it up. So for this book and the many other's I've "had to read," I say, thank you book club!

The Return of Cassandra Todd by Darrel Nelson is a fast-paced, suspense-filled Christian Romance. Covering the themes of forgiveness, bullying and abuse, with a quirky sense of humor thrown in for good measure. I found the book to be a quick read, covering difficult topics with tact and applying good Biblical foundations liberally throughout the story.

The main players: Cassandra Todd – former head high school cheerleader. Married to Brad Duncan – former high school football star and all-around bully. Their marriage seemed like a fairy tale come true, until Cassandra gets pregnant with their son Justin, and her attentions turn from him to the child to come. As his business interests begin to fall through and the birth of their child puts a strain on their marriage, Brad’s true colors begin to show. He is narcissistic and expects to be the center of everyone’s universe, especially Cassandra’s. But, as any parent can tell you, once a child comes into the picture, attention quickly goes rightfully to the child. Unable to cope, he begins to get progressively more abusive to her. Being a good Christian woman, she prays and hopes that God will heal her marriage and make it work, but when Brad threatens her child, she knows it’s time to leave.

MY REVIEW

The dreams of a high school nerd come true. Turner's secret crush who turned out to be so cruel to him in high school is running away from a very bad man and needs his help. So far so good. The story starts out truly gripping and I really like the inner dialogue of Turner's as he works fixing a faucet or some other maintenance problem at the motel where he works.

Then the story drifts a bit after he recognizes Cassandra. But that is in the prologue!

I have never, ever liked head jumping as Randy Ingermanson calls it. To get inside the head of each character takes truly great skill. Not many have it, or the patience for it. You have to take the time to introduce a character and develop the character before you go jumping somewhere else. It is a sad mistake that so many newer fiction writers do, and I'm not at all sure it is their mistake. I think the editors share a large part of the blame. But, when an author not only head jumps, but uses flashbacks as well. Unless done extremely well, you've got stew not a story.

Now... all this happens in the prologue as I mentioned before. Another thing that I drives me crazy is the constant repeating what's gone on before. Then add to that a really stupid female and you've got something that literally drives me crazy.

However, Nelson deals with an issue that I wish more authors would tackle. Spousal abuse is rampant, but it is always shoved under the rug because it isn't a nice subject. Nelson tells Cassandra's story in a way that is not formulaic, and there are some really good turns of phrase that are not story flow stoppers, just pleasant gems for wordsmiths.

I give this novel 2 stars. It isn't horrible, but it isn't great. It's readable, and there are far too many out there that are unreadable.

I am blessed to have a husband who doesn’t have a temper and would never lay a hand on me or our children. Domestic violence is an issue that can be sensitive and Nelson delicately writes on the subject with compassion and eloquence shining through her words in her newest novel The Return of Cassandra Todd.

Cassandra Todd finds herself in a dangerous situation when the man that has vowed to love and protect her becomes a danger to herself and her their young son Justin. When every woman’s worst nightmare becomes her reality she is left with little choice. She does the brave thing in leaving but her escape doesn’t go exactly according to plan. An old schoolmate from High School named Turner Caldwell comes to her rescue and is a changed man from the boy she used to know.

Cassandra and Turner are thrown together by circumstance and were not friends in the past but quickly bond over their present situation. Turner is risking his own life to help them. The problem with trying to run from the past is that it means someone is chasing you. Will danger find them? Is there romance in the air?

The Return of Cassandra Todd is the first novel I’ve read from Darrel Nelson and I loved his style of writing and was drawn immediately into his story. He kept me engaged and added elements of adventure and survival that added excitement. I look forward to reading more from him.

The Return of Cassandra Todd by Darrel Nelson has some interesting parts, but parts of it I didn’t care for.
It’s a story about a woman Cassandra who left her husband because he beat her. I believe she should have done that, but should have sought help from other people beside a man she went to school with. That would have been O.K. but they started to have feelings for each other. Since she just left her husband and is a Christian, she should haven’t had fell for another man so fast. I think being a Christian author he shouldn’t have put his characters in this situation. How will people who aren’t Christians see the difference between Christians and non Christians.
The parts I really, I mean really, really loved was the way Turner escaped capture so many times and the ways that he got away. I think that part of the story was the best and I could see many more ideas for stories coming from the escapes. I found those parts quite fascinating. If you do read this book I think the escape parts would be well worth it.
The story line was fine, but did drag in several parts. The ending was O.K., but not what I really liked.

High school doesn't hold many good memories for Turner Caldwell. He was bullied and tormented and wanted nothing more than to leave those memories behind. When Cassandra Todd reappears in his life, those memories come back. But, Turner is a different man now and Cassandra is in trouble. Her high school jock husband, Brad, is abusive and she has left him, but he has resources to find her. Drawn to Cassandra and her son, Turner knows he can't turn away from her request for help. As they find themselves on the run from Brad, they discover a new friendship and special bond. But, if they survive, Turner wonders if there will be a future for them.

I couldn't put this down. I loved it. The characters were terrific, the adventure and drama were suspenseful and kept me turning pages well into the night. Spousal abuse is becoming more common as a topic for writers and I thought Darrel did a fantastic job here as well as the longer-term effects of bullying. I'd love to see more of Turner and Cassandra and Justin. I really didn't want this book to end.

I read Darrel's first book, The Anniversary Waltz and enjoyed it, so I was thrilled to see that he had a second one out. And, I loved this one even more than I did The Anniversary Waltz.

Turner Caldwell was the target of mean-spirited pranks and taunts in high school, but he has moved on. That is, until the popular girl whose friends bullied him, returns to Lakewood and brings back memories he thought he’d forgotten. When he realizes the trouble Cassandra Todd is in, he has to decide quickly whether he will help her and her son get away from her abusive husband.

As danger draws nearer, Turner must decide to forgive and save them all from the hands of a madman. Will forgiveness be enough? Will he save them in time? Has Cassandra really changed? Is she using him just to get away from her husband?

Page-turning excitement, difficult relationships, wonderful dialogue—all wrapped up in “The Return of Cassandra Todd” by Darrel Nelson. If you like the Christian Romantic Suspense genre, you will certainly be fascinated by Nelson’s latest work.

Turner is a young man who has many emotional scars from his high school years. He was the victim of bullying. His high school crush was Cassandra Todd. Unfortunately, she was his main tormentor's girlfriend. Turner knew that she did not approve of the behavior, but didn't know what to do about it.

Several years pass and Cassandra Todd ends up taking a room in the motel that Turner is the handyman for. She has a four year old son and she is running from her abusive husband. Turner is pulled into helping her and keeping her safe.

This book is full of suspenseful moments. Turner is an incredible guy. He is funny and kind. He takes Cassandra's son under his wing and helps the boy and Cassandra cope through some stressful moments. Turner is intelligent and forgiving. He keeps his head and comes up with some unique solutions to problems.

This book kept me up reading in the night. I couldn't put it down until I finished the last page.

There is a little romance, but because of the nature of the situation, it is kept in appropriate boundaries. There is some violence, but otherwise it is a clean book.

The Return of Cassandra Todd opens with a very disillusioned young man, Turner Caldwell. He works at the local motel as a handy man and is attending college full time. His life is one of existence without joy and he has lost faith in God.

Cassandra Todd and her son return to her hometown trying to escape a life of abuse from her husband. When Turner sees her, memories of being bullied and humiliated in high school come rushing back and this time, Turner can't seem to avoid his past any longer.

The plot thickens as Cassandra's husband shows up. Turner is pushed to the limit trying to keep Cassandra and her son safe and in the process finds grace, redemption, and so much more!

I loved this book! It is extremely well written and the characters are engaging and realistic. The story is filled with faith, suspense and a bit of a romance.

Some parts of the story seem a bit far fetched but given this is a fictional story, I just went with it and truly enjoyed reading this book!

I almost passed on this book for review. The original description of the book didn't sound extremely promising, but since it was a male author, I requested it, hoping it was a guy book.

The book far surpassed my expectations. There was much more suspense in it than I had anticipated - and I love suspense. It had a great fast-moving plot with very likable characters. I totally got into the book, possibly because I identified with Turner's high school experiences, and truly could not put the book down until I finished it.

This is a great story, but it also deals with some important issues. Though fictional, it does a great job of showing the very real issues of bullying and spousal abuse and the long term effects they have. Darrell Nelson is a fairly new author. This is his second book, and the only one I have read, though I was scheduled to review his first book (I think the tour got canceled). I enjoyed this one enough that I plan on reading his first and any others he comes out with. I highly recommend this book. Definitely worth reading.

I am such a fan of Darrel Nelson and have been anticipating this novel since it was mentioned in his last awesome book, THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ. In the middle of the night Cassandra Todd and her son left her abusive husband. Taking the bus to her hometown she planned to take care of a bank transaction and leave right away knowing this would be the first place he would look for them.

Turner Caldwell is one of Cassandra's former high school classmates and was in love with her but never told anyone. He also was bullied terribly during those years. He's shocked when he spots Cassandra going into the bank one afternoon. Eventually they are thrown together and what entails is a suspenseful tale of abuse endured by these two people.

I loved this book! Nelson has great talent and writes in such a way you feel the characters pain and anxiety. He deals with the long term effects of abuse wonderfully. I highly recommend both of Nelson's books!

I loved this book in the first few seconds my heart was pounding and I couldn't put it down. Its an action packed suspense story full of adrenalin rushes, ups and downs, and sadness.... I loved the depth of the characters portrayed. I loved that you felt for the main characters and what they had to overcome to get past, past feelings. The imagery was awesome I felt like a was apart of the journey it was clear and invoked emotions.... I loved that I wanted revenge on certain characters and cheered inwardly when they had what was coming {thats sounds bad} but its that good! I loved the relationships that were formed and the subtle base of the important things in life that prayer and each life is so important to another if we take the time to listen and feel. I really enjoyed this book and found myself not wanting it to end yet. Its a suspenseful, heart pounding well worth the read!

Get ready to dive in and not want to put this book down. The Return of Cassandra Todd was wonderful, exciting and very suspenseful. I was on the edge of my seat and white knuckled with this one. The Characters are very believable. You fall in love with them, want to help them out and make sure everybody is O.K. I did not want this book to end.

I highly recommend it and Darrel Nelson's first novel The Anniversary Waltz.

The main theme of this novel is escape from spousal abuse. The plot was quite repetitive and that was a distraction from the overall effectiveness of the book. The end of the repeated cycle was pretty good, however. The character development was good and Christianity well presented. this book might appeal to male readers too as much of the action takes place in the foothills and involves outdoor survival. The Return of Cassandra Todd takes on the important topic of spousal abuse. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Cassandra's flight and Turner's role in helping her to escape from her abusive husband. The ending was page turning and exciting--as well as completely unexpected. I thought the characters were true to life, especially how Turner rises above his circumstances to save Cassandra and her family.
