Popcorn!: 100 Sweet and Savory Recipes

Rate this book
Popcorn offers limitless room for experimentation -- it’s so versatile it can be paired with almost anything, and it is naturally low in sugar and fat yet high in fiber.  While popcorn’s image has suffered as a pre-packaged, artificially flavored, microwavable junk food, home made popcorn is truly a revelation – a creative, healthy, gourmet treat.

This book is the perfect inspiration to explore this quick, easy, fun grain, and it features over one hundred original, mouth-watering recipes that span the taste spectrum from savory to sweet.  Each recipe is accompanied by stunning, bright photography. Starting with new takes on old-fashioned favorites like parmesan popcorn, caramel popcorn, or all-butter popcorn for true traditionalists, the book goes on to survey hot an spicy variants inspired by culinary trends like mesquite smoked popcorn or popcorn in paprika and olive oil. On the sweet side, there are a wealth of recipes featuring caramel/toffee flavors, while chocolate gets a whole chapter. The book is rounded out with recipes for more elaborate dishes using popcorn as an ingredient like pink popcorn mallow bars and popcorn-breaded Southern-fried chicken.

When I found this book it was like the cookbook I've been waiting my whole life for. It's mainly snacks and deserts rather than proper dishes but it leaves nothing to want for. Interesting flavours, colourful pictures, easy to follow instructions and very tasty recipes. It has everything from domestic snacks to deserts for rather sophisticated dinners. This is, without a doubt, my favourite cookbook.
Disclaimer: the reason I love, love, love this cookbook is that I'm a popcorn fanatic. If you don't like popcorn, this book is not for you. Although, if you are interested in rather different cookbooks I definitely recommend it for anyone wanting to try this very interesting way of incorporating popcorn in your kitchen.

A fun book, filled with not only a lot of fun recipes, but an impressive variety of recipes, from wasabi popcorn to ice cream.

The book is divided into 5 sections: Introduction, Bar Snacks & Appetizers, Balls & Bars, Savory Dishes & Desserts, and Chocolate & Candy. The introduction includes a variety of ways to pop popcorn, so almost all the other recipes begin with already-popped popcorn. The rest of the chapters could perhaps be better defined as: Loose Popcorn, Popcorn Balls & Bars, Ground Popcorn as an Ingredient, and Candy Coated Popcorn. Each two page spread includes one or two recipes and a photo of one of the recipes. Most of the photos early in the book are full-page, while most of the later ones just take up a corner of one of the pages. There is an index in the back, but a couple of the page numbers in it are incorrect.

Recipes I Tried:
Lemon-Basil Buttered Popcorn: easy and delicious
Mama's Italian Popcorn: tasted good at first, but too salty and spicy for me (a white woman living in the upper Midwest)
Country Fair Kettle Corn: may be user error, but I ended up with popcorn coated in barely-edible, very-burnt sugar
Black Pepper and Parmesan Popcorn: I somewhat decreased both the cheese and pepper and loved the result; an impossible to resist combination
Best-Ever Caramel and Pecan Popcorn: the author says this is her favorite recipe in the book. It's similar to my current caramel corn recipe and an absolute hit. I used cashews this time due to personal preference, but almost any type of nut would work well
