These all ages tales from the DC Universe, beautifully written and illustrated by the award-winning team of Art Baltazar and Franco, will entertain new readers and seasoned fans of comics.
Tiny Titans: Aw Yeah Titans! picks up where the previous trade paperback left off, collecting the last six issues (45–50) of the on-going 2008 series.
Like the previous trade paperbacks, Tiny Titans: Aw Yeah Titans! is composed of several individual mini-stories ranging from two to six pages in length with no overall cohesive storyline, yet each chapter has one overall theme. The cast of characters is rather large and it once again is expanded a lot. Like the previous trade paperback, a child could do an activity for fun and a pin-up poster that they could hang somewhere at the end of each chapter.
Tiny Titans: Growing Up Tiny! has a myriad of stories. It opens up with Barbara Gordon having a Batgirl party with Stephanie Brown having duo Robin and Batgirl roles. We have a story about Robin going away on a secret mission with Batman and having The Protector as his replacement, which Talon is not happy about, because he thinks that he should be Robin's replacement. Finally, after fifty issues of Beast Boy chasing after Terra and being hit in the head with several rocks, she finally reciprocates her feelings publicly.
The League of "Just Us" Cows returns for a couple of issues and a brief appearance of the Underwater Pet Club. There was an introduction of Team Nucleus Meeting, Super Oranges of the Justice League, and the Squishy Titans Meeting. I really like that there are so many and varied clubs in the Tiny Titans universe, because there is a place for anyone and everyone – even cows and oranges apparently.
Overall, I really liked this series – it is fun, adorable, light-hearted, charming, funny, and surprisingly having many connections to the main continuity stories and ideas. Typically, when a series ends, I usually think that there were so many stories yet to be told or it was cut too short just as I was getting to love the characters. As for Tiny Titans, I felt satisfied with what we received – could there be more, sure, but I was happy how it ended.
Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani penned the entire trade paperback and for the most part, it was written rather well. It is quite funny, giving many Easter Eggs and allusion to comic events that have happened in the main continuity, which is rather clever for the older people who may be reading this series.
Art Baltazar does double duty as he penciled the entire trade paperback as well and because he was the only penciler, the artistic flow of the trade paperback flowed exceptionally well. The penciling was done exceptionally well. It has a cartoonish quality, which is rather apropos to this series.
All in all, Tiny Titans: Aw Yeah Titans! is a rather wonderful conclusion for the series and while I'm sad that there won't be any new Tiny Titans adventures – I'm glad with the ones we had.
I've seen references to Tiny Titans on the internet so I was really excited to see this volume at the library; however, the 8th volume wasn't really the place to come into it. The art is fun in a juvenile way but the story is random shorts that aren't held together much. There are also lots of inside jokes and references to earlier comics or the greater DC universe that I was missing. I assume there was some kind of explanation for the point of the comic in the early issues and that now in 45-50 the comics are entertaining for fans.
A fitting close to a popular series my 12 and under daughters absolutely adore. My adult self would appreciate a more sophisticated, mature read, however I respect the talent on the books to know they're doing everything right. I love the whole package from an art standpoint, the art style, choice of colors, and lettering.
Well, it's finally over and I'm so very sad to see it go.
Tiny Titans was the best book DC had released in years. A kids book to be sure, but one that was written and drawn by fans, so there were plenty of head nods to older stories that we all grew up with.
I would recommend Tiny Titans to any comic fan young or old. Art and Franco did an amazing job.
The final outing for the Tiny Titans. :-( They go out on a high though, with batgirl costumes, babysitting, and a really odd dream. Some good in jokes, and the kids are as charming as always. A very good read.
3 1/2 stars. Adorable art, appropriate for young audiences. I was on a Young Justice kick after watching the stellar short lived television show, so I'm going through comic books now. :)
It was a terribly long wait for me to be able to get my hands on this book but it was well worth it. I love these cutely drawn superheroes. Thank you for your work Mr. Baltazar!
