Thoughts:
"Sophie loves to sing, but no one but the crickets wants to hear her song, that is until a special situation calls for her talents and where her cowgirl songs not only come in handy but save the day as well."
Sing, Sophie is the story of a young girl who dreams of being a singing cowgirl. She tries to sing repeatedly but is to told to stop singing by every member of her family. Each time they have a different reason why her singing is bothering them. Finally, they need her singing and then they appreciate it.
This book would be a good book for transitional readers. There are multiple lines of text per page. The text moves around on the page and is black text on colored pages. The words are mostly common vocabulary words and several lines repeat throughout the story. The pictures are not highly supportive of the text but they work with the story to provide some hints of what is happening.
Sing, Sophie! is one of my all-time favorite books to read aloud--to one child, or to a group at a story time!
It's a wonderful, rollicking, yee-haw story of Sophie's determined effort to keep on singin' her song, no matter how many times her family tells her to "take it outside." (They love her, but they're distracted.) Finally, at the very end of the day, Sophie's singing and strumming saves the day. I don't know if writer Dayle Ann Dodds had a melody in mind for all Sophie's songs...but I made up one of my own (quite bad, really), and my kids and grandkids love it. And to read this, I get to trot out my biggest, boldest Texas accent, which normally I keep on a low simmer!
Love this book...someone PLEASE bring it back into print!
This book has a story ...I checked it out at my local library. My kids LOVED it. We even took it on a car trip. They continued to talk about and quote lines long after it had been returned. I went back to check it out only to find that it had been removed from circulation. I then found that it was out of print. Finally I found a copy that was reasonably priced and snatched it up fast. Yes, the book is that cute. "Oh, goose grease!" just read it for yourself.
This is so cute. It is the first library book Rachel ever brought home and it is perfect for her. The little girl, Sophie, runs around in cowboy get up making up songs "ducks and geese make me sneeze, I got freckles on my knees..." soo sooo cute!
But guess what! I am trying to buy it and it is $75 and up! ?? what is up with that??
Sing, Sophie! is a cute book about a girl who can never stop singing. It drives her family crazy at first, but then they realize how much of a joy it is!
I read this book to my students before dismissal, and they strummed their guitars every time I would sing one of Sophie's songs through out the book. Full of rhyming, great vocabulary. Engages the children, and they really enjoyed it!
A great read/sing-aloud book for preschool - kindergarten. The worse you sing the better! Kids love Sophie's ridiculous song lyrics, but they also like the story of a girl who keeps hearing, "Go somewhere else to play right now, you're going to wake your baby brother / disturb the fish / destroy my hairdo".
Are you a cowgirl at heart? Do you love to strum your guitar and yodel til the cows come home? That's Sophie, a cowgirl, true n true. This is a great book to sing to kids and introduce country ballads and yodeling.
