Follies of a Navy Chaplain

Rate this book
Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy and the Philadelphia Diocese, Connell J. Maguire joined a writing workshop in Riviera Beach, Fla., where he began writing plays. At the encouragement of fellow members of the workshop, he also tried his hand at prose. "Follies of a Navy Chaplain" is a collection of vignettes, along with a handful of poems and a pair of one-act plays, reflecting the author's view of Ireland, America, the Navy, and the priesthood through a pair of smiling Irish eyes. "Follies of a Navy Chaplain" will make you laugh some, and cry a little.

This was an OK book, but the title is very misleading. This book has very few stories from a Navy Chaplain and mostly stories about this mans' life. While some of the stories are cute, most of them are a yawn. I would not recommended this book unless you are looking for stories about a priest from Ireland.

This guy was a chaplain for decades and yet he only related a handful of stories from his time in the military. I was sorely disappointed.

Cute-ish, but lame and boring. I was so excited for stories from a Navy chaplain about, you know, Navy stuff and chaplain stuff. But all I get was very bad Roman Catholic theology, irreverence in many cases, and just a lame book about a random guy's random stories. Sorely dissapointed.

An enjoyable book on the growing up of Father Maguire, his time in Ireland, his time in the Navy and his post Naval Carreer
