Night Realm is a Paranormal Detective novel set on Australia's Gold Coast. It is the story of private detective, Ryan Fox. When he meets the beautiful Selena Thorne, Ryan’s life takes a detour into a dark world he thought only existed in folklore and in the minds of movie producers. Selena hires Ryan to acquire the unusual research of scientist, Doctor Marlon Becker. Becker is a hematologist and an expert in blood disorders. When Ryan discovers what the focus of Becker’s research is, it puts a whole new spin on things.
Chelsea, Ryan's teenage sister, meets Travis and she soon realizes there is something very different about this attractive and mysterious new boy in town. A relationship quickly develops .No sooner has Chelsea fallen for Travis when she learns he’s not actually what he seems.
Meanwhile, Homicide Detective David Marks investigates a spate of strange murders, where victims appear to have had every drop of blood drained from their bodies, with the only apparent injuries being two puncture wounds on the throat. With no solid leads on a suspect and more people dying every few days, Marks is getting nowhere fast in his quest to apprehend the killer.
As the story unfolds the lives of the characters - both human and vampire - come together in a gripping climax where not everyone comes out alive, and not everything goes as planned.
Born in Sydney, Australia, and now living on the Gold Coast, I have been writing for more than 30 years. I've written numerous full length and short works of fiction and non-fiction, and have had many articles and short stories published in major Australian and international publications.
I love how every line, page and chapter of this story keeps you glued to the book. As the story unfolds the pieces of the puzzle fit together in an unexpected manner. It's so descriptive that it's easy to block out the rest of the world and just lose yourself in the story. I enjoyed this book even more than the Twilight series and there were certainly no boring bits!
I hope there is a sequel soon as I would definitely buy it.
Night Realm is a book that falls into both the Detective & Paranormal genres. It follows a cast of characters who are all connected to one another, but who are all trying to get radically different results.
Ryan Fox is a private investigator, down on his luck. Business isn't as fruitful as it used to be, so when he gets a call from the beautiful owner of the newest club in town, Selena, & sees the amount she's willing to pay for his job, he can't turn it down. It's an intriguing job- obtaining research on a rare blood disease. At home, relations with his younger sister are growing tense, & he's not sure what to do about it...
Chelsea Fox wants nothing to do with her brother. Bitter from an incident in the siblings' past, she would be happy if Ryan just dropped dead. She's out to live her own life, the way she wants to- not the way Ryan tells her to. But when she meets Travis, for once, she seems happy. But is Travis who he claims?
David Marks is a homicide detective with a heavy weight on his shoulders, & it only gets heavier as time goes by. A parade of murders with little evidence have popped up in the area, & no one seems to know what's going on. With no blood in the bodies or on the scene, no point of entry other than two small punctures in the neck, & traces of a rare virus, he's stumped. Add that to a failing marriage & the pressure's on- he's going solve one of his problems, no matter the cost.

+I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author's writing is very detailed, which made this an easy to process read. It had a good amount of drama without trying too hard in a genre which, in my opinion, is the case a lot of the time.
+I felt attached to a few of the characters, which helped keep me emotionally invested in the story. I wanted to know what happens!
+Normally, I dislike books that constantly flip between points of view. But with Night Realm, I felt that each switch transitioned smoothly, thanks to the use of *** to differentiate. I found these switches easy to follow, & think it helped to make me so tied to the characters.
+I liked that it was set in Australia. Thanks to the author's descriptions, the landscape in which this was told was very beautiful, a great back drop.
-I did find a few grammatical mistakes, & a few times throughout, the sentences seemed a bit too short & choppy.
All in all, I give this a 4/5 star rating. Night Realm is a gripping novel that left me asking- is there going to be another book? I would recommend to vampire fans who like their fanged creatures on the non-sparkly side.
-Thank you to Darren G. Burton & Giveaways group for the free copy-
Not the average vampire tale.... I loved that it was set in Australia - the places were actually familiar! So that was a nice change. I was a little confused by the introduction of characters early on as there seemed to be so many but once I got into it I couldn't put it down! Lots of action, blood, gore and mystery. Just what I like to read! just wish I knew the answer to the final question!
Night Realm by Darren G. Burton is a detective/PNR book set in Australia where P.I. Ryan Fox is hired to retrieve research by a scientist who is working on an immunization against vampires. The mysterious woman who hires him also has a brother who becomes a love interest to Ryan's very angry and rebellious sister Chelsea. Detective Marks of the Homicide division is hot on the trail of a serial killer who leaves mutilated bodies all over Australia.
This was my first read from this author and while I did enjoy parts of this book there were parts that didn't come off. They were either too fantasical to ring true or just didn't come off well. Ryan's POV narrative seemed clipped and didn't flow well. Also way too much descriptive narrative concerning Ryan's showering and dressing details. Det. Mark's POV read very well and I really connected to his character, much more so than Ryan's. Ryan's relationship with his sister didn't get it for me either, he just seemed to blow her off again and again so it left me with no empathy of his view of her. The author did manage to surprise me with a couple of twists which is hard to do considering all the detective novels I have read in my life. I realy loved Mr. Burton's villians, they are nothing like what the usual fare is in PNR/UF these days. Its really hard to write pure evil and the author managed it very well. Chelsea did nothing but make me want to slap her silly and she seemed a little wooden at times. The ending however left something to be desired. It was too rushed and was confined to a few pages and wrapped up way too easily too fast. A few of the plot threads at the end didn't ring true for me. Such as, Selena not bothering to help Ryan outside of her house while he and the police were being attacked. You can't tell me a vampire with that kind of hearing had no clue what was going on in her own driveway. And that also brings me to an another unbelievable thread where Det. Mark's walks out with vials of the vaccine and Ryan from a police station not in his jurisdiction and just starts driving away to kill the bad guys. When the police are killed it took up all of a couple of sentences compared to pages of Ryan's mundane daily tasks. Selena also had a complete lack of empathy and yet her insistance on not feeding on humans did not gel. And then in the end we know full well she wanted to remain a vampire yet nothing was forthcoming on her transition other than she was not happy, but the next thing you know she is calling Ryan for a date....wth?? The author's premise was good, his world building good as far as his settings. I really liked Det. Mark's and wish that he was the protag in this story and not Ryan. This author could do really well on detective novels without the paranormal thrown in and his forensics was spot on and maybe could delve a little deeper into that side of crime scenes. If he did I would definitely be up for those books, perhaps a series? All in all it was not a bad read, trust me I've read much worse and this was worth my time. I have not read the author's numerous erotica books, by the way. Just saying!
Ryan Fox is a private investigator who is desperately running out of money and living with his younger, bitchy sister who blames him for their parents death - cue a horrible relationship between them. Nothing Ryan says or does ever pleases Chelsea and to be honest I'm surprised he didn't slap her or tell her to get out a few times over - I know I would have done! Chelsea's only interested in leaving school, working and partying until she meets Travis, a boy with piercing blue eyes and incredible strength.
Detective Marks is investigating a couple of murders. Murders which, whilst very different, have some strange similarities. Both bodies have weird marks on their necks and traces of a virus which cannot be explained. He is baffled and has no leads to go on whatsoever until he is told about a haematologist who tried to help with some other murder cases a few years ago. Although, what this professor tells him is not something he completely believes...
Ryan Fox meets a gorgeous, if not a little odd, woman who's an owner of a nightclub whilst on a stakeout, chasing a guy who's cheating on his wife. She hires him to do a little detective work for her with the promise of it leading to bigger and better things and it does - the pay check is a nice one! But that's not all it leads to...
There were lots of different characters in this book that at first I couldn't see where it was all going, but it all soon fits together and makes sense. Love books that draw all the characters in like that.
I liked this view of vampires and loved the idea of them going out hunting kangaroos! Something I've never read before, but then never read a vampire book set in Australia before, which made for a nice change. Michael was exactly what I expected from a vampire - evil, strong and determined to be the top of the food chain without bowing down to anyone, including his family.
My only problem with the book was the endless descriptions of Ryan getting ready. He was constantly showering, splashing on cologne and changing his clothes, but I felt these descriptions were a bit unnecessary and deviated from the pace of the book. But other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it - nice to read a male author's vampire book as well as I tend to read female authors more often.
I would like to thank Darren for the free copy of his book and look forward to reading more of his vampire books!
I wasn't expecting to find this book appealing as vampires hold no interest for me. However after being told it was more of a detective story, I gave it a go and I'm pleased I did. Night Realm does have the vampirical side to it, with an especially descriptive human to vampire transformation, but it also definitely has the thriller element. Overlooking the supernatural side allowed me to enjoy the suspense. Apart from being overly descriptive at times in the earlier part of the book, I found Night Realm to be a good read. It kept me interested and I wasn't disappointed with the ending - can't ask for much more.
Murders are happening in the town that Detective David Marks is in and they have similarities of two puncture wounds in the neck. Ryan is a PI working for Selena and has been assigned to find out what Dr. Becker is researching. His sister, Chelsea, has met Travis and he’s different from the guys she’s dated in the past. With a vampire running around who only cares about what he wants, is anyone safe? I liked the mystery involved in this and how so many characters’ lives intertwined. I would definitely recommend this story.
So, my first review didn't save...so let's try again...
This was a great mystery/paranormal book. It was one of those books where there are characters you love and those you love to hate, but they all are needed to make the book work. I really liked the setting of the book, Australia...who doesn't love the Aussies. This isn't your normal vampire book and it was a breath of fresh air in my opinion, and I'm looking forward to reading future books.
This is not Twilight in Australia. Because in the real world there are no vampires.
There are hungry private investigators, ornery teenagers, used-up cops, beautiful women, mad scientists and a family of killers that keep moving around the country. Killers that no one believes in.
Well, you'd better, cuz these serial killers have fangs.
Night Realm is a paranormal, young adultish book that incorporates a crime/detective story in too. The criminal side of the story was quite well researched and I thought it was believable, although not too intricately written. I would have liked to see more of that side of the story.
The paranormal side of the story leaves little to the imagination. It is much the same as any other vampire book, if you've read Twilight or Vampire Diaries you'll likely know just about everything there is to know about being a vampire in this book (alas - they don't sparkle).
The side stories and characters were flat, it was fairly obvious that they were created and introduced for the purpose of being killed or used in some way in the story. While the main character (Ryan) was fairly developed, his sister Chelsea, left quite a bit to be desired. Her thought processes seemed scattered and some of them completely out of character, or the character I created from my understanding of Darren's writing at least.
I had issues with the haphazard way in which Travis (Chelsea's mysterious boyfriend) was willing to do as Chelsea asked after such a short period in time of them being together. This 'Oh, I've just met you but I will die for you, you must be my soul mate' crap that's cropping up in young adult books these days is seriously insane! It doesn't work, it ruins an otherwise reasonable story most of the time and despite the fact that falling in love at that age does feel like that, it still leaves this reader with a very unnatural feeling.
The story in itself is not that bad. I probably would have given this a 3 out of 5, but I struggled immensely with the crazy amount of detail given to mundane every day things.
Each time Ryan entered a room we were given a run down on every piece of furniture and person in there, in intricate detail. Every time Ryan felt the need to have a shower, we knew every step of the process.
I get that certain chracters are habit driven, some are very alert and observant, but the reader simply does not need to know all that stuff UNLESS it adds to the character, further develops the plot or ties in later in some way. To me, this felt like there had been a word count total set and Darren fell about 10,000 words short. Seriously not needed.
An example of this was at about 23% in, I'm paraphrasing here, but each thing listed is mentioned in the story:
Ryan lathered himself up, danced around under the water, patted himself dry, brushed his hair, sprayed on cologne, put on his undies, picked black slacks over a suit, debated on a white, black or charcoal shirt, put his wallet in his back pocket and his keys in his front pocket.
This level of unimportant description was rife throughout the entire story. It is not needed.
I did notice a couple of other things:
55% - Why is it that no one even slightly thinks about the bite wounds being made by a vampire? Yes, we all believe they are not real, but just about everyone knows what one is and despite the immediate feeling of being stupid that would come from thinking it could be a vampire, it - to me at least - seems to be the first and most natural conclusion. They could of course then talk themselves out of it, but really, the fact that NO ONE says "Oh hey, that looks like a vampire bite" to me seems completely and utterly unnatural and unbelievable.
96% - 'but I'm not (no) match for him, unfortunately.'
The ending... what can I say?!
It was cheesy and made me want to throw up a little in my mouth.

Murder, romance and vampires, what more can you ask for? Ryan Fox is a private detective. He lives with his little sister Chelsea, but all is not loving in this family as she blames Ryan for the death of their parents. Ryan agrees to work a case for Selena Thorne, the owner of a nightclub, after meeting her during the course of another investigation. But Selena has secrets of her own to hide. In the meantime, Chelsea meets Travis, a mysterious newcomer to town. They both become enamoured with each other right away, but Travis has his own secrets that he quickly shares with Chelsea. In the meantime there are murders taking place all through Australia that have police baffled since the victims are drained of all their blood. How all these stories come together in the end you need to read on further to find out.
I really enjoyed this book. The romance was light, and the mystery of how these characters all fit together kept me going for some time until they all started melding together. The book also ended on a good note with an interesting twist. There is a sequel, but there was in no way any kind of cliffhanger which is refreshing in this world of cliffhanger sequels that seems to be flooding the marketplace lately.
***I RECEIVED A GALLEY OF THIS BOOK FROM THE AUTHOR IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW***
I was not aware that I was reviewing a galley with only 25 page count until I got to the last page.
This is a good book and I was interested almost immediately. I normally don't like vampire stories but, this one kept me interested. The characters were developing and if anything there was too much information about their lives which made the book drag at times.
I was left hanging, so I will have to go get the full story to find out what happens. Unfortunately, I am uncomfortable recommending a book I couldn't finish but based upon the information I have now, I would recommend this book.
This was a decent book. The storyline was good, I just felt that there was a lot of useless details. The characters were fully developed, but minute details of the main character's life were unnecessary. It was a little slow for most of the book, but the last few chapters really brought on the action. I was happy with the way it ended. It was a nice surprise.
