"One of the most welcome signs of the literary spring is the appearance of the annual O. Henry Awards collection."--Los Angeles Times
Twenty short stories judged by the editor as the best by American writers and published in American magazines between the summers of 1988 and 1989, beginning with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners. I found all of them enjoyable and over half to be superb. Surprisingly, fourteen of these were by authors I had not read before.
The most impressive were: “The Eleventh Edition” by Leo E. Litwak (1st Prize); “Lumumba Lives” by Peter Matthiessen (2nd Prize); “The Reverse Bug” by Lore Segal (3rd Prize); “Heat” by Joyce Carol Oates; “Unidentified Objects” by James P. Blaylock; “1940:Fall” by Alice Adams; “The Ape Lady in Retirement” by T. Coraghessan Boyle; “The Island of the Mapmaker’s Wife” by Marilyn Sides; “Einstein’s Daughter” by Claudia Smith Brinson; “The Forecasting Game: A Story” by Felicia Ackerman; and “The Autobiography of Gertrude Stein” by Bruce E. Fleming.
