If you are interested in joining the Society for the Creative Anachronism aka the SCA, this is a book to look for. It gives you the basics on what they do, how to make or find period clothing, and how to create what's known as a persona in the society. I used to go to some events when I was younger and looked into getting back into it in recent years. That's why I picked up a newer edition of the book.
I thought it was well written. Especially liked the descriptions of chivalry and the list of virtues it requires. And how to behave courteously. I actually learned a lot about how to be a decent person from this book. It outlined how the SCA is built and based on chivalric values, as should be the rest of human society.
I especially enjoyed the part about the rapier arts, but that's the fencer in me.
A basic primer on the background information needed to join the SCA; probably unnecessary for those who have studied the medieval period in depth, who can pick up the slang and organizational structure through conversation, but helpful for those of us with no clue what we're doing.
I love playing in the Society for Creative Anachronism. This Handbook should be in the hands of newcomers to the Society. It explains the history, customs, and many activities open to every gentle who would like to explore life in the Middle Ages. I recommend it as well for veteran players who may have overlooked some of the more obscure corners of the Society. This is an in-depth view of a wonderfully diverse and creative organization.
