Practical, concise, and easy to use, Simon & Schuster's Guide to Rocks and Minerals contains everything that the rock and mineral enthusiast needs to know. This field guide is divided into two large sections -- one devoted to minerals and one to rocks, each prefaced by a comprehensive introduction that discusses formation, chemistry, and more. All 377 entries, beautifully illustrated with color photographs and helpful visual symbols, provide descriptions and practical information about appearance, classification, rarity, crystal formation, mode of occurrence, gravity of mineral, rock chemistry, modal classification fields, formational environments, grain sizes of rocks, and much more.
Whether you are a serious collector or an information-seeking amateur, this incomparably beautiful, authoritative guide will prove an invaluable reference.
"Minerals are normally defined as solid crystalline substances, formed by natural and usually inorganic processes".
Simon Schuster's Guide to Rocks and Minerals (Paperback) by Martin Prinz
When I was but a young girl, one of my favorite activities was collecting rocks and using a rock polisher to make them shine! Rocks are already insanely beautiful but when polished, they glow in a way that is just ethereal.
So this was an activity I loved but have not indulged in for years! Still have some of the old polished rocks though and would like to get back to it.
This book can be used as a reference. I will be honest..I never really read about the minerals. But I liked reading about the rocks and the different types. There is a treasure trove of information in this book so if you are a rock collector or just naturally interested in this subject matter, I would recommend this book.
hate my geology major, love this book. wish they made a pocket size edition for the field. pro: there are pictures which are printed in color con: the minerals ARENT in alphabetical order
beautiful pictures and detailed data on the many physical properties of rocks and minerals. just as important to keep on-hand as a foldable shovel. it rocks, what can I say
Questo non è un libro da leggere dall’inizio alla fine, ma da tenere vicino. Un manuale che nasce come strumento, ma che finisce per diventare anche una forma di contemplazione.
Sfogliarlo significa fermarsi sui dettagli, sui colori, sulle strutture, sulle imperfezioni.
