The dainty Prince Anel must travel without military escort to a neighboring kingdom where tensions run high. Sastre, an honorable Guardian, is brought in to be Anel's only protection for the journey. Anel is enchanted by his noble bodyguard, but Sastre becomes more interested in Kaleth, the spirited servant and lover of Prince Anel. Kaleth is forced to disguise himself as the prince to be a decoy for his enemies and proceeds to stir up unfamiliar feelings in the heart of the austere Guardian. Sastre finds himself torn between duty and desire.
The plot moves too fast and the end ties up too neatly. This is an insta-love story without much depth between a guardian (soldier of justice?) and a servant.
He llorado mucho.

The plot uses typical tropes (bait and switch, noble warrior falling for slave/commoner) and starts to get interesting just as the story ends. The artist knows how to draw a pretty boy or two, but only two - most of the main characters look like the same person wearing different wigs. There's none of the visual nuance, on the one hand, or exaggeration, on the other, found in Japanese produced yaoi. Further, all the characters look like they've walked off a fashion designer's sketch pad - they're to slick by half. Nevertheless, this book kills a few minutes even if it doesn't take you very far.
No me he podido terminar el libro, no conecto con los personajes y me he perdido completamente por lo que he tenido que saltarme algunas páginas hasta llegar al final.
A town is terrorised by a huge hulk of a man when a lone warrior comes to combat him and saves the place, ridding it of the disturbance, when a villager asks him if he will accompany him to the kingdom of Sarash as it is in need of his tremendous skill with the blade, as the kingdom is threatened by upheaval unless he comes and gives a hand in sorting it out. Feeling as though it is his duty, the warrior accepts and goes with him, as he is a guardian, and as such is a man of great strength. His people are bred from being young to be the best warriors of their kind and to take on anything in their way.
Sastre the guardian comes to the kingdom of Sarash, where prince Anel is waiting for him, and looks him up and down as if he is not the right man to use to keep the place at peace. Tares, the royal councillor tells Sastre the dire news that their kingdom and that of neighbouring Tyrsan has not been good lately, and the unrest between them both could spell war. In this there is only one solution and that is for prince Anel to marry the neighbouring kingdom's princess Indira, to cement their relationship once and for all. The only problem is the journey he will make to see the princess, and as there are rebels who want to overthrow the throne, they will stop at nothing to kill the prince, so Sastre has to go with him to ensure that he gets there safely. And as it is supposed to be a peaceful journey to the kingdom, he cannot risk going with an armed escort of soldiers or he would give the other kingdom's people the wrong impression.
Accepting the task, Sastre familiarises himself with the castle and people, finding that the prince already has a lover and that he is jealous of the affection he lays on the new guardian Sastre. After seeing him up close and personal, Anel wishes to see more of Sastre, and he does. He disrobes to show not only his well-toned and muscled body, he shows him the large tribal tattoo on his back which is proof that he was initiated into the order of the guardians. While Kaleth and the prince are making love, all Anel can think of is the new guardian and breaks off their togetherness to go talk to Sastre about some matter of importance. Once Sastre knocks on his door and enters, he is greeted with the prince's unexpected nakedness, and an invitation to show his tattoo once again by royal appointment.
Prince Anel speaks with Sastre about the plan he has to send Kaleth as his decoy, and pose dressed as the prince, while he will follow along behind as his servant. Sastre finds it an interesting plan, but informs him his decoy will be put in grave danger if they go through with it. Anel introduces Sastre to the young Kaleth who will travel with them disguised, then when he is alone in the castle, he breaks down, thinking why the prince has chosen him of all the servants in the place to walk into certain death. He now thinks he is using him as he knows he has a crush on Anel and thinks he will do anything for him - even if it means his death.
When they make their plans to leave to journey to the rival princes' kingdom, Sastre develops an affection for the young servant Kaleth even though he starts to resent him for being used in the prince's plan. Just as Sastre thinks everything is going to plan, it all starts to go very wrong as the real prince falls into enemy hands. What can Sastre to rectify the problems he faces, and can he save the poor Kaleth who risks all to help the prince when he does not return his affections?
The use of shade and hatching in Kosen's artwork is spectacular and provocative as it shows perfectly well the dramatic entrances of the main characters in fight situations. The shading is particularly dramatic, and proves that it can be used to great effect within the manga.
This is a dramatic tale of two males who are sent into the very brink of war while jealousy, bitter rivalry and intense love reign in this luscious fantasy setting.
I am rather keen on fantasy manga and after reading Crimson Spell I thought I’d give Saihoshi a go. It is beautiful to look at and I do enjoy their artwork. The books itself is nicely bound and was not hugely expensive, as I managed to get it in a shop here and did not have to import, which is always a bonus.
The characters were beautifully drawn and I loved the elaborate costuming. In the back there are several pages of mock ups of attire for Sastre and Kaleth. So pretty! And I admit to a little bit of a girlish moment admiring all of the different looks they’d created. heh. Paper dolls Kosen style? (Took me a long time to give up my Daisy) The weaponry was also incredibly cool and chibi, cute!
I really liked Sastre, he had the whole moody and alpha down pat, with a faint hint of knight in shining. He was rather honorable while the Prince is throwing himself at him and yet at a total loss when it came to Kaleth. I think Kaleth was also a great character. He had a bit of a shitty deal being thrown over by the Prince, but picks himself up and fights. Fiesty, with a purple behind of steel. (would you look at that picture, his butt = tight like a tiger. heh).
I am not convinced however, that the story line was as tight as it could have been. There were a lot of extraneous threads and characters that seemed to detract a little from the central story. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for the odd subplot and tangent, but not at the expense of the main characters. In saying that, the extras were VERY pretty. http://sharrow.wordpress.com/2009/03/...
Set in a time of military tension, a dainty prince must travel without military escort if he wishes to show his good intentions. But that doesn’t mean he’s traveling unaided. A strappingly handsome guardian, one sworn to protect his highness, accompanies him along with the prince’s own servant reluctantly pressed into being his highness’s double.
Tensions run high as all the men struggle with enemies without and growing sexual attraction within… Kôsen is another part of the Yaoi Press stable and here, they bring their own sexy style of appealing young men to the table.
In closeup, musculature is lightly but definitely outlined. Reedlike figures compete with rugged, strapping men to create stunning contrasts in masculine pulchritude. Humor, sexual hijinks and warfare combine to make a zesty story.
More of a 4.5 rating. The artwork is beautiful, very crisp and detailed, stunning to look at. The story is also great, sometimes serious and emotional at other times very funny. A very enjoyable read with some very steamy scenes! Recommended for fans of Yaoi.
