Didier Lefèvre quitte Paris pour sa première grande mission photographique : accompagner une équipe de Médecins Sans Frontières au coeur de l'Afghanistan, en pleine guerre entre Soviétiques et Moudjahidin. Cette mission va marquer sa vie comme cette guerre marquera l'histoire contemporaine. Au croisement des destins individuels et de la géopolitique, à l'intersection du dessin et de la photographie, ce livre raconte la longue marche des hommes et des femmes qui tentent de réparer ce que d'autres détruisent.

About the author

Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor’s Daughter with Joann Sfar.

In 1994, a chance encounter with an American World War II veteran named Alan Cope marked the beginning of a deep friendship and the birth of a great biographical epic.

Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, translated around the world and soon to come from First Second books, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980’s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter, the late Didier Lefèvre.

Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.

Segunda parte da trilogia que narra a ajuda humanitária da MSF no Afeganistão, durante a guerra com a União Soviética, em 1986.
A história segue, com relatos da rotina da atuação dos médicos em Zaragandara, vilarejo base da MSF, próximo à zona de conflito.

A narrativa gráfica, intercalando fotografias e quadrinhos segue maravilhosa. Captura com precisão o aspecto humano do que cerca a área de conflito e todo o desafio que a equipe da MSF precisa superar para dar apoio à população local em um hospital improvisado.

Auparavant, beaucoup de femmes des villes, de toute leur vie, ne mettaient pas le nez hors de chez elle de leur maison." "C'est vrai ? " 3 Biens-sûr que c'est vrai. Dans une grande ville, c'est pour ça que l'invention du chadri a été un gain d'autonomie et de liberté. Elles ont enfin pour sortir de chez elles. De toute manière, on en fait un symbole exagéré et idiot de ce chadri, les vraies priorités, pour les femmes, c'est l'accès aux soins, à l'éducation, au travail et à la justice, pas les fringues."

I would have readily given both this and tome 1 of this series five stars had the writing been more compelling. The format - a spectacular combination of photos and drawn graphics - is wonderful and unique. However, the writing often left me bored and drifting off. That said, this is well worth picking up even to skim through. And if you don't know much about the amazing work that MSF does, this alone may hold attention.
