In this book Joel Spring traces the long tradition of libertarian opposition to established forms of schooling from Rousseau and William Godwin to A.S. Neill and Paulo Freire. He illuminates the central questions that have concerned radical educators: How can teaching encourage independence and self-reliance? Can rigid ideas and ideologies be avoided by radical educators? What is the contradiction between "schooling" and "education"? How does truly libertarian child rearing challenge the family structure? How can real learning free people so they can begin to change the world around them? Spring also discusses the ideas of several figures whose relevance to education is just beginning to be appreciated, including Max Stirner, Franciso Ferrer, Wilhelm Reich, and Tolstoy. Spring concludes with suggestions for what directions radical educational change might now take.
Kitabın üçüncü bölümü, “Bilincin Gelişmesi: Marx’tan Freire’ye” inanılmaz zihin açıcı! Zira Freire eğitim yöntemlerinin merkezine, Marx’ın bireysel bilincin gelişmesi ve modern toplumda yabancılaşma teorisine uzanan insanlık kavramını koyar. Böylece Freire’in eğitimi, eyleyen olan, özgür olan bireyler yetiştirmeye olanak tanır.
For anyone looking for something more concrete than Lies My Teacher Told Me or Teenage Liberation Handbook. This seriously looks at the problems with schools from a perspective that is objective so far as it surveys the history of deschooling thought beginning with Tolstoy and ending with John Holt. This book made me seriously reconsider becoming a teacher. But what I really got out of it was the importance of remembering the why behind schools, which is sadly lacking in education today.
A reasonably clear, comprehensive overview of libertarian thought/philosophy in education. (The author means "libertarian" in the sense of political liberation, rather than the American political party, though there's certainly some overlap.) Covers William Godwin, Rousseau, Tolstoy, Freire, and A. S. Neill's Summerhill (though this chapter focuses more on Wilhelm Reich). Does not include discussion of the larger free school movement or the Sudbury model, both of which were relatively new at the time of publication.
